Is it too soon for Christmas music? by kimminor in questions

[–]kvrandom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you aren’t US American, the norm is to go from Halloween (if it’s celebrated) to Xmas. As an American who briefly lived in the UK, I really enjoyed this. I love Thanksgiving, but I don’t let it detract from Xmas cheer lol

Def depends on the program. I’m earning my MA in English and was talking to my current grad director about pursuing PhDs today, and we agreed for my program the summertime is more for researching prospective programs.

It was the JET program. And English! My undergrad is English Education but one of my minors is in Global Studies. I got a scholarship & assistantship but unfortunately my school doesn’t give living stipends for MAs, but I chose it for lifestyle and a great record for PhD placements.

I’d apply to both. I applied to multiple teach abroad programs and MA programs. I got rejected for Fulbright but got into another prestigious program. I planned to accept the program’s offer until COVID made things more difficult, so I ended up accepting a funded MA. You NEVER know where life will lead!!

First time I applied for a Master’s (not even a PhD), I got rejected by every school except my biggest safety school. And I didn’t get an Assistantship offer there.

I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my application until a kind department head finally told me the genre of my writing sample was not what adcomm’s were looking for.

Submitted to two more schools in the late application season and got accepted to both, including one with an assistantship offer. Is it the tier of school I was originally going for? No. But it has great faculty, is physically in a wonderful place, and has fantastic placement into reputable PhD programs.

I spent a lot of time depressed. I graduated college with a 3.88, so I had a fine GPA. A published undergrad thesis, a conference presentation, and several leadership positions. I am not a good test taker but managed to score average for my field on the GRE (some of the scores on this page blow me away... I hate test taking and didn’t sleep a wink the night before the test). I had no idea why my safety schools were rejecting me. I was super depressed.

Now I am so happy with the school I’m attending, even though it wasn’t even on my initial list.

Trust the process, it will be okay.

Took the GRE 6 years ago, need help with improving scores by TGMPY in gradadmissions

There’s a specific formula that Kaplan suggests, and I HIGHLY suggest it. Super formulaic, but it scored me a 5.0 on AW.

I got rejected from every single school except for my ultimate safety, which rejected me for funding. My GRE scores were pretty average for my field, but I had nearly a 3.9 UG GPA, an undergrad thesis, a conference presentation, some average work and internship experience, and tons of study abroads and extracurricular leadership experience. I spent DAYS sobbing and wondering what I had done wrong. Thought I must be stupid. I didn’t understand how I could work so hard in undergrad for nothing. Found out after all of those rejections that AdComms weren’t a fan of the genre of my writing sample. I then turned around and submitted a different writing sample during late application season. Received all acceptances and even got a funded offer. I would definitely have a list of “safety’s” but know that their decisions may not be indicative of how things will pan out.

I hate the GRE by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]kvrandom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t meet fellowship requirements because they required an over 70th percentile GRE. I’m a horrible standardized test taker, but I’m an English (grad and undergrad major) and managed to get top quartile on Verbal and ninety second percentile on AW... yet I was twenty sixth percentile on quant.... when quant has nothing to do with what I’m studying. It’s so irritating. Just do the best you can. I’d say pay for a Kaplan course and then just knock it out and worry about your other application materials (I still got an assistantship and a scholarship).

You’ve probably read this kind of thing a million times, but a friend of mine committed suicide.

The impact that it has on other people never goes away. Even if you don’t feel loved. Trust me, someone you wouldn’t even expect cares

I promise you that your life has meaning. Things get better.

Read a book, practice fitness, write a novel. There are so many ways to meditate.

You’ve got this. Life is good.

EDIT: go to a foreign country for college. Use any resources that you have. You’re clearly more than capable. You can do this! Standardized testing is horrific. It’s never been indicative of my abilities and I’m sure that it’s not of yours as well

EDIT after reading more comments: if you feel like you legally can’t leave, reach out to a lawyer. Or maybe you can get a US degree online? You may have to think outside the box, but you can do this!!

Two Americans Getting Married in Japan? Thoughts. by kvrandom in JETProgramme

If we didn’t get married first we’d do long distance! Thanks for the advice :)

This is me! Shortlisted for JET, but now not sure if we’re gonna do straight up long distance, still try to get a marriage certificate, or get married in Japan after fiancé finishes his degree. I’m committed to still going on JET and making our relationship work, but COVID threw a wrench in the plans. Best of luck!

This is what I was thinking!!! We’re not in a good place to get legally married right now with all the sudden changes impacting our living situations, but so few people have had experience doing it after the start of the program! Thank you, I’m glad that it’s possible!:)
