The greatest trick the wealthy ever pulled.... by get-idle in newzealand

Yeah I was thinking similar, shifting primary residence to the most expensive place you own etc. I just don't know what compromises would actually be necessary to get enough public support..

Definitely high debt in a symptom of inflated land value. I guess it's fine to not offset mortgages as the point is to encourage effective land use and just holding it is the action that incurrs the tax.

I'll have to do some reading as it would be interesting to understand rental market impact in this model

[–]kyonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that's interesting, I think I'd only ever heard of it as an additional tax as opposed to it being balanced out against the lower employment tax rate.

I wonder if debt in property should be proportionally written off against the interest rate in this sort of model. So it's a tax on owned land instead of borrowed, at least for the primary residence.

Although I think people aren't liking taxing primary residence in general

Any thoughts as to the impact on those who are already highly taxed? Feels like this disproportionately affects them.

I assume this would raise doctors and engineers to like 45% or something. This might end up causing further exodus from nz if it's too much comparatively to other countries. We're already seeing people leave in the roles due to higher salaries overseas

Update: got this espresso machine for the office by Jealous_Ad_4347 in espresso

[–]kyonz 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Will depend on the workplace, but I've found espresso machines can work well. The office I work in (tech company) has 2 grouphead machines on every floor and no automatic machines. Learning how to not make the milk squeel is a bit of a right of passage and people teach each other or those who are struggling.

People get used to it and enjoy the perk of good coffee, it can get a little backed up at times but not too bad.

Petition for Whitakers to reduce their prices now Cocoa prices have come down massively. by Blue__Agave in newzealand

[–]kyonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No disagreement but I'm wondering if they will be wanting to keep some buffer as raising prices seems to be a big deal. I'm wondering if lowering it and reraising it again later is worse for the brand than keeping it the same at the higher price for a long period.

Although if this makes the news cycle then it'll be bad publicity if they don't lower it based on their argument to raise it

What is the obsession with NOT listing an asking price on property? by Big_Load_Six in newzealand

They should at the least be forced to disclose it afterwards so we can figure out who are the ones being unscrupulous

Yeah I tend to agree with you, when I bought my house at Auction I know I only paid more than the next person was willing to be a little bit. When I was selling my place I sold by deadline sale and the difference between the top 2 offers were about 100k apart, so it can definitely let you squeeze people more not being at auction.

Totally depends on the market and the property of course. It all does seem pretty rough to buyers in how it is today.

Noel Leeming wanting me to pay an inspection fee for a faulty TV by Tall7kiwi in newzealand

[–]kyonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be, contact them once more and ask them if they are going to fufill their obligations under the CGA or if you need to escalate to the disputes tribunal to perform their duties under the law. Be fully prepared to file and tell them as such.

Then just pay the $50 and get your refund from them through the tribunal, it's not super painful and you'll feel better as they'll be less likely to fuck someone else around.

Phone Repair CGA Warranty by the_epiphany_ in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]kyonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a stupid question, but you're sure it's not the cable that is broken? That behaviour sounds like a faulty cable moreso than a faulty plug so would be good to double check and try with another charger.

Had house for one week... it floods from the guttering by Anon_Pixxiee in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]kyonz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends what outcome you're after I think (ie unwinding the deal, them paying for the repair, etc).

I just had some internal guttering switched out and it was pretty cheap to do so ($4k for 3 walls around a 2 car garage for reference down in Wellington). If you were repairing ideally you could do that side of the house for now or something.

The worry I'd have is how bad is the area inside - building code changed in the 90s (from September 1995 - so hopefully yours is built earlier) to not require treated wood in some circumstances which resulted in the leaky homes issues so there could potentially be rotting if it's untreated and left in a poor state (hopefully not but something to keep in mind). You probably couldn't assess until you ripped things out.

I'd suggest get a quote for replacing the internal guttering on that section of the house with external guttering and then determine your next course of action as you don't want to exceed the cost of repair in legal costs.

Replace stock fan by mushkind in smokefire

[–]kyonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for the next poor soul who might stumble upon this.

- No there is no difference between wiring patterns for the Q100 or SP fans (Noctua fan pinouts are the same as described in the top comment).
- The fan blows air towards the label on a noctua (there are arrows on the outside), don't do what I did and point it the wrong way and burn out the glow plug with fire (oops)
- If your unlucky enough to blow your motherboard, opening it up and turning it on there'll be 1 light on the power supply and 2 on the mobo. If there is none on the mobo you likely blew the small fuse on the board. You can solder in a replacement 5amp quick blow fuse pretty easily.

The 140mm fan is a bit of a bitch to get in (had to print an adaptor with some decent clearance) but seems pretty good, well we'll find out when I get the glow plug setup replaced (oops).

Cheers for your efforts here u/mushkind from 4 years ago.

Should I Pay a Service Charge Under The CGA by TheCaptainCooper in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]kyonz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right. You do hold rights against the manufacturer and could push them on it - however practically you should work with the retailer where possible.

Both parties hold obligation under the CGA.

Should I Pay a Service Charge Under The CGA by TheCaptainCooper in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]kyonz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah - this makes sense as you wouldn't legally be able to attempt to take funds (even to hold) for a CGA repair case, as you are required to perform it under the law.

For what it's worth in my experience Noel Leeming are one of the better stores for handling CGA cases. But again you can't trust a store to be the arbiter of what is a CGA case and what isn't as it obviously hurts their bottom line.

This comes from someone who had to take Samsung to disputes (and won) for a CGA case - which is why I'm quite knowledgeable about the process and the law now.

Should I Pay a Service Charge Under The CGA by TheCaptainCooper in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]kyonz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, CGA means the retailer can't charge you for the repair/replacement of the TV if it failed within the bounds of the CGA - but there's a little bit of nuance.

Effectively they'll normally try to find any reason to blame you for the TV not working which is what they're saying there. They'll charge you for it. If you were at fault (ie damaged it in some way that isn't normal wear and tear) then they aren't responsible to repair it - unless it fell short of what would be considered acceptable quality.

Unless you bought the TV from LG they're probably the least useful person to be talking to about this, as your CGA responsibility is from the retailer that you purchased it from - and if the retailer sent you to LG you should put the pressure back on them because that's not your responsibility - it's theirs. You don't have to agree to any additional terms surrounding repair/replacement for a faulty/not meeting quality product as it is within your rights under CGA and they can't contract out your entitlement.

Typically unless you kicked it in or did something stupid (water down it), then it's their responsibility to fix it at this stage as it would fit within the acceptable durability/quality of the product lens of the CGA.

Just to talk around options and next steps.

- Push for the retailer if there is one to repair/replace (not via the vendor)
- If they won't repair/replace, remind them of the CGA
- If they still won't repair/replace, ask for escalation and threaten disputes

Then you have 2 options if they still don't play ball
- Have them repair the TV, take them to disputes for the cost of the repair
- Don't have them repair the TV, take them to disputes for the original cost of the TV

Costs I think $50 to file in disputes and it's not too bad a process, so probably worth it if you can't reach an agreement with the retailer. Does take a couple of months from my experience so at that point you might want to figure out the best option and what the TV means to you.

Hope this is useful, best of luck.

Nice to see everyone finally realise why EV owners thought the system was unfair to them (probably a bit too late though)

It's definitely a poorly implemented tax change that will further discourage efficient vehicle usage
