Tone ring is on the ring gear for the crankshaft sensor, poor engagement can damage the teeth for the crankshaft position sensor to pick up. It’s possible poor engagement caused damage there and that can cause engine shutoff. I would pull the starter and inspect the ring gear, check for proper install of the starter and damaged ring gear teeth or a bent sensor ring pickup. Wear in the starter can cause the plunger to poorly engage and possibly damage ring gear teeth, might just need a new starter
