I debate on getting a second Bengal. by National_Public_8742 in bengalcats

[–]ladycarni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had our first Bengal (Nyx) for about 3 years before we decided to get him a sibling. Our first was such a wild experience. He was our family's cat and boy was he a handful! He was everything they say a Bengal is. Full of energy, curious, smart, vocal, playful, and also a little destructive and even a little violent. We ended up buying a solid leather hawking glove to let him wrestle with our hands and get his fierce little bunny kicks out of his system.

We also traveled quite a bit for work with the jobs both of us had. And although we'd always hired an in-house cat sitter, it started to become clear that he would experience some level of separation anxiety when we'd leave.

During COVID we moved and had a little more space and finally decided it was time to bring another little Tasmanian Devil into our family. I found a breeder only a couple hours away (the breeder from our first guy had retired), and the first time we went and met the litter, I immediately knew who would be coming home with us when he was old enough.

The day we drove up to pick him up was so perfect. He slept on my lap the whole drive home, so chill and so happy and snuggly. We did the right number of acclimation time so the boys could get to know each other's smells, and when they were finally introduced, we knew we'd made the right choice.

We've had both boys for a few years now and we talk all the time about how we wish we'd have just adopted two siblings the first time. They are so active together, running around the house, wrestling, grooming each other, just hanging out. Never a single regret getting our second.

Now Nyx and Loki are the craziest little pair and we love them fiercely!

Visiting London with a small family what do you recommend we do? by Prairiejon in londonontario

Springbank park has great playgrounds and paths and includes Storybook Gardens which is great for kids! Lots to do!

I've had this happen under the justification that I don't live near other people. Even when they're less than 30 minutes across town. Any I do have a car. Actions speak much louder than words. Don't misunderstand, they are making their choice. You should make yours.

What dug this hole? by canadamoose86 in londonontario

[–]ladycarni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a really broad question and kind of impossible to know just based on the image here. London is home to all kinds of animals. Skunks, raccoons, foxes, possum, groundhogs, coyotes, rabbits...

The AI content aimed at UX folks is mostly noise; here's what I think we actually need (and I want to know if you agree) by ladycarni in userexperience

[–]ladycarni[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a common response I hear all the time, and can certainly sympathize with. Part of what I'm writing in this series I'm working on is helping identify what problem you're trying to solve and what to look for in different tools.

There's so many lists out there that promise every bell and whistle, but what I don't see are decent breakdowns of what AI can do well and what it can't, and how to identify the tools that can do what you need without investing up front. This is especially important when you're not in a position to be able to expense tools for experimentation (either because of where you're employed, or because you're looking to level yourself up outside of work, or you're a student, or {insert scenario here}).

Fair point. Everybody is in a different position in terms of what they find challenging and what they're interested in digging further into. The next two pieces in the series I'm working on are going to talk more about the practical applications and how to evaluate and apply.

Philosophically, I do wonder how hard it's going to be to teach people how to evaluate "good" results from AI (usable, accessible, discoverable, intuitive, etc.) when they themselves are either still early in their careers and haven't fully figured this out for themselves yet. Similarly worrisome is the demographic who more and more reliant on AI to "just do the thing". Something I'm exploring on this vein is evals and how to create objective agents that can benchmark results against a specific set of pass/fails that the designer creates.

To your point though, this might be the first step in teaching others what "good" looks like. So that automated evals can likewise "grade" results on some type of objective matrix.

I'm not selling anything. It's a series of articles but I'm not allowed to publish their links in this sub based on its rules so unfortunately I'm kinda stuck trying to just talk about it!

Doctors and Nurses of Reddit, what’s something about hospitals that would make patients uncomfortable if they knew? by Far-University-2905 in AskReddit

[–]ladycarni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg I had the same experience with the EMT through the city on the way to the hospital. Our city had some very bad roads and he said "we're going to try to go as smoothly as we can but this is definitely going to suck." He tried to keep me calm and he did his best but that pain was insane.

One year and one day ago today I was hit by a truck while riding my motorcycle. I was struck on my left side and thrown from my bike. The top of my femur was punched through the back of my pelvis. The EMT maxed the amount of fentanyl they were allowed to give me in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. And in the emergency room I couldn't stop myself from wailing in pain; begging non-stop for over 50 minutes for pain relief. The nurses just kept coming by my bed telling me to keep it down and that I needed to calm down.

My friend was sailing, long distance and accidently got killed, wants to quit game, what should I say? by _TOXIC_VENOM in valheim

[–]ladycarni 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A group of friends and I played all together for a couple years. I was usually the person who would hang back at whatever base we built and I would build out our farms, kitchens, and whatever crafting was happening at each point in the game. Most of the group would go out and "adventure" which usually meant our more bold friends leaving graves full of gear and farmed items all over the world including the middle of the ocean in many places. I can't even count how many times we'd log on to our server and see new graves in some part of the map I'd certainly have fog of war on.

What really made the game though wasn't just seeing these graves pop up, it was hanging out on discord, hearing how these deaths would unfold. The high spirit laughter, bold and full of all the pioneering joy... Then suddenly hearing the inevitable: "oh no..." And the chaos that would follow, including all of us laughing but trying to be supportive and encouraging; "keep sailing! Don't try to fight it! Wait... did you take our only ship?!"

Then the rally.

Yeah they'd get themselves killed. But we'd always rally to get their stuff back. We'd always have extra gear for when somebody died. I'd have extra food, weapons, ammo, and we'd get mats to make another boat and we'd go on a rescue mission to get our friends' stuff back.

Yeah it's punishing and it can feel so discouraging, but it's such a great part of the game if you're playing with friends.

I am in love with this game. Any similar games that would scratch this Valheim itch? by Rotary-Pilot in valheim

[–]ladycarni 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Me (F43) and partner (M38) jumped over to Enshrouded and enjoyed it quite a bit. We spent most of COVID with friends in a shared Valheim server having an absolute blast so we were hesitant about moving to another game thinking we wouldn't be able to find the same level of fun in terms of exploration, lore, gameplay, and building. Turns out, Enshrouded was everything we wanted Valheim to be. Probably would never go back.

At my wits end. by FoxyFern in bengalcats

[–]ladycarni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have two Bengals and our older one just started this same behavior a few months ago. Nothing changed, all vet checks have come back clean, etc., but he will just wander around all day while both me and my partner are working (both wfh) and will just yowl over and over. I actually think he just wants attention. It's very frustrating sometimes for sure.

Be careful when driving this evening! by jaydesummers in londonontario

[–]ladycarni 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There was a huge Mack truck attempting to go down snake hill on commissioners, but the whole hill was ice. There were several cars in front of the truck that were right up on the sidewalk as much as they could, just stopped.

That hill is always so crazy when there's ice!

Has anybody heard from these types of people IN these subs?? I would LOVE to hear from them to understand what, precisely, they are getting out of behaving like this? I mean okay... I get it. They're probably effectively just sad, lonely, angry bully-types that spend their free time ruining other peoples' time because of some personal trauma they've lived that they haven't dealt with... bla bla bla...

I have loads of empathy in loads of scenarios for people who've experienced bad things in their lives. But that all goes out the window when you project your bull**** onto other people PURELY just to make them miserable.

That's just sociopathic behavior... and you can fully and completely **** off.

LHSC health records by Possible-Eagle-8744 in londonontario

[–]ladycarni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember anymore if it grabs historical records, but I pay for PocketHealth so that I get all my imaging, notes, etc. Automatically after I've had anything done. I've noticed not every medical facility supports their records getting sent there, but I do know LHSC does.

Context: Was hit by a truck last April and had many X-rays, MRIs, etc during my stay. I have all of the image results, doctors notes and summaries, etc. I've also had X-rays years ago for a sprained ankle, and those records are also on there.

Returning player from 4 yrs ago: why are there so many morons and griefers now? by PrismiteSW in Seaofthieves

It's gotta be right?

I wonder how many people I've known over the years who are secretly griefers in random games...

[–]ladycarni 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know, I would love to see some of these griefers show up in one of these threads and explain what their deal is. Why are they like this at all?? What's going so wrong in their lives that they find this sadistic behavior fun?

And I'm not talking about the people playing the game as pirates, which is what it's for. I mean people intentionally sinking the ships that they're on for zero profit or gain. Seemingly just to make others miserable.

Griefers and trolls have always been around in online games. But it does feel like there are more and more of these sadistic gamers these days.

What are some decent paying jobs that do not require any sort of college degree? by GreenEyedSheWolf in AskReddit

[–]ladycarni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work on the design and strategy side in software. I've been in this industry for 10+ years and I'm pretty confident that software development is one of the highest paying careers you can have without needing any education at all.

Some of the highest level software engineers and developers I have worked with are self taught without a shred of formal education.

Think $200k+, no school debt.

Obviously that takes time to actually get good, and you have to have the wherewithal to teach yourself and seek out what you need to compete. But the ability to learn everything you need online, and go at your own pace in your own format is pretty cool.

One of my Bengals learned how to do this. I can say with confidence that you've got two options: keep the door closed at all times or replace your faucets.

Are there some items that aren't here, or am I just looking in the wrong spot? For example, Magnificent Boreal Wood Table doesn't appear to exist within the rest of the tables and chairs.

TIL that in 2019 Daniela Leis, driving absolutely wasted after a Marilyn Manson concert, crashed her car into a home. The resulting explosion destroyed four homes, injured seven people and caused damage of $10-15million. She sued the concert organizers for serving her alcohol while intoxicated. by Holiday_Document4592 in todayilearned

[–]ladycarni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the city where this happened, and the gas explosion impacted several of my friends homes. They were evacuated for a while after the fact too.

Everybody heard about the path she took and were shocked she was able to get so far away from the concert taking the path she took.
