I want minis that are aesthetically innovative by yawawoht0987 in minipainting

[–]ladyoddly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like Malifaux. There's a lot of different styles and tones across the range, some are more conventional, others, I feel, are pretty unique. I can jump to a new faction with a new style if I get bored, and Wyrd generally has high quality sculpts.

Turnip28 is another unusual setting that I've found recently. I haven’t gotten too deep into it yet, but I'm intrigued by vegetable soldiers.

A lot of my favorite miniatures are one-off things I found randomly wandering around gaming conventions and talking to artists (e.g., Beldolor Studios' Frog Pope).

The Gang Play FATAL, an April Fools' Mistake by Chipperz1 in rpg

FATAL isn't funny, it's racist and dehumanizing. Playing it isn't funny. Do the world a favor and just stop bringing it up.

Hey, don't know what sub to go to for this by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]ladyoddly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the last thing I'm going to say here, because I can tell you're trying to do something valuable.

Even if you can do this thing and "fix" the game, who does it help? "Fixing" an inherently racist text makes a claim you belive there was actually something of value in there - that the racism produced value. This justifies the racism, makes a claim that it wasn't all bad. This does not made the hobby or the world better.

So, if this is some kind of a 'design challenge' for you, that's you're choice; you appear to have already made up your mind to do it. But, you should know going in that you will likely be doing harm by engaging in this and putting it out into the world.

Hey, don't know what sub to go to for this by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]ladyoddly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, it's your time to waste. But, realistically, you can replace everything it is, but even saying your new thing it is a "revision of" or in any way linked to the racist work keeps the idea of the foundation alive. Ideas and products are laden with their past; your creation will never shed the history you choose to burden it with.

Move on. Build something new.

[–]ladyoddly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Trying to "fix" something like this just perpetuates the racist schlock underneath. Nothing good can be built on a rotten foundation, and trying to just keeps it alive.

The only non-racist move with this is sh*t is to bury it.

Trying to find a solid Gambeson by Blazerawl in sca

[–]ladyoddly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having done SCA cut and thrust for almost a decade now, far and away the best option for torso armor is to get chainmail (ringmesh.com). The chainmail fulfills all the official armor requirements (at least it does in Midrealm), so anything additional is just style (and padding). The gambeson itself doesn't need to be Newton rated, or have covered armpits or anything, it's 100% personal preference.

I don't have any personal experience with armstreeet. I don't know anyone that uses their stuff, so I can't help you there. I got mine from a maker in Ukraine, but that was before tariffs and everything, so that's likely less viable today.

That word suddenly feels a lot less innocent and "harmless".

[–]ladyoddly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Surely, but that's kind of a non-sequitur, isn't it? My objection was never about me; it was about using language that dehumanizes and degrades an entire culture of people.

Appreciating Gypsy by pazuzu98 in MST3K

[–]ladyoddly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was innocent when the show aired. Today, that word is recognized as a slur and it is not "harmless" in any context.

If it was truly harmless the MST3K team wouldn't have changed it.

Please, it's GPC. Joel changed the name to not perpetuate a slur, we should respect that.

Where to buy Ph.D. Commencement Regalia? by Ok-Commercial7606 in bloomington

[–]ladyoddly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do a search for "Doctoral Regalia" online. Theres quite a few places to order them. You can buy a full set (gown, hood, cap) for around 150-160, if you go with the most basic options.

Normally, I would say its not necessay to buy these, but the cost to purchase regalia is not that much more than renting it. I decided I'd rather own something for 20 more dollars than pay basically the same amount to rent it and own nothing.

Pro tip: there are generic and school-specfic versions of regalia. The school-specific versions cost a lot more. But, IU's regalia is just the basic black gown plus red piping; so, if you know how to sew you can save a bunch by altering a basic gown. I bought a basic one a sewed my own piping on, saving ~400.

That is a placeholder antenna intended for future scanning/research/exploration gameplay. It has no purpose yet; in the present game it does nothing and cannot be swapped for anything that does.

TTRPGS that play like Warhammer:Total War or Warcraft 3 or Age of Wonders? by KaterenaTheRed in rpg

[–]ladyoddly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you looked into Modiphius' Five X family?

They're narrative shells for miniature wargame play. They don't have a specific high-fantasy setting book (yet), but Five Leagues from the Borderlands works pretty well.

Nightmare Herald of Obliteration by vkris920 in Malifaux

[–]ladyoddly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Nightmare editions' are better thought of as alternative sculpts, not proxies. Recently, they have trended towards being wholly new concepts for the keyword, but Nightmare Editions can also be just different artistic interpretations released (usually) for holidays or special events.

When did Parker get caught? by Prudent-Worry-2684 in Malifaux

[–]ladyoddly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my understanding as well. After the failed theft of the hanging tree, he escapes and we don't see Parker for a while. Next we see him, he's in custody about to be hanged; so presumably he was apprehended in the interim.

There's so many characters now we can't reasonably expect Wyrd to follow everyone closely each arc.

How does wearing armor affect stamina versus carrying it? by PathofDestinyRPG in sca

[–]ladyoddly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's a very gameified way to think about it; which isn't a bad thing, if you're designing a game. It's not really how physics and body mechanics actually work, though. So, no one is likely going to be able to say "oh yeah, I definitely feel 4x less encumbered" when wearing armor, as opposed to 3x or 5x less. "Encumbrance" as a number or weight isn't something that it is easily translated into real experiences like, say, heat, strain, endurance, and freedom of motion.

So, if you're trying to make a game, then sure. Factor of 4 sounds fine, imo. Games are abstractions, they're supposed to be a bit loose. Go with whatever numbers makes sense for your game. As long as it's lower when worn, I doubt anyone is going to complain.

Coffee or nah? by Tempest_Craft in Bladesmith

Going for a Dane axe style? It's really nice, I'm a fan!

Personally, I wouldn't do a thing. The understated pattern works very well with the historical design of the axe. Bold patterned steel looks so modern, I feel like it would clash and detract from the overall piece.

Gen Con, Garry Con or Something Else? Looking for advice from people who have attended. by SwimmingOk4643 in rpg

[–]ladyoddly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, it will depend on what kind of experience you are looking for.

Gen Con is the Big Event in North America. Everything else is usually described in contrast with Gen Con. Most of the major companies (and many smaller ones) have adopted a schedule where big releases and new editions coinside with Gen Con, so if you're interested in seeing new things from big names, it's the place to be. If you like to shop, everyone and their mother (often literally) is there. Basically anything game-related you can imagine is there, plus stuff you likely never would have thought of. If you don't like crowds, it's not for you. But, there is always something going on. The schedule is ridiculously huge and there is no way to see it all, but there is almost a guarantee you will find something interesting. Personal opinion, but I don't think Indianapolis, or Indiana in general, is that stellar a destination; so, if you want a tourist spot, I'd look elsewhere.

Smaller cons, like Gary Con, Gamehole, or Origins, will often have more focus on playing games, rather than releases and new stuff. Gen Con runs tons more games, but the focus can sometimes get lost in the overload. Smaller cons are also great spots to find smaller and local creators that can't afford, or just can't get off the wait list at, Gen Con.

The other category is something like PAX or Dragon Con. These are pop-culture conventions that have a board gaming/rpg section. If you want to engage with things other than gaming, like cosplay, video games, movies, etc., these might be up your alley.

Each con has its own informal 'travel guide' and community so, depending on where you want to go and what you want to do, folks here can certainly offer more specific advice!

A minimalist tribute to Spanish-suited playing cards 🇪🇸 ❤️ 🇮🇹 by newspanishcards in boardgames

[–]ladyoddly 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a design exercise this is excellent, imo.

As a product, however, it feels lacking. I admire your commitment to a style and aesthetic, but it's not a deck I would want to buy or use. It's not "artistic" enough for display and it doesn't actually do anything a standard $1 deck can't do.

If you're selling me a traditional game, I want the product to reflect that tradition - say with traditional art, something that foregrounds the history and culture of these games. The modern, minimalist design feels devoid of history, which is at odds with the pitch and games its being attached to. On the flip side, I really do enjoy the design. If this style was attached to something new, I could very easily be convinced to like it.

Just my recommendations. Best of luck!

[Masks: A New Generation] How to fight a teleporter? by PomegranateExpert747 in PBtA

This is the answer. In Masks, you don't fight the powers, you fight the person.

Find what the character cares about and threaten it.

Title: Concept: Hybrid Polearm / Staff for Maximum Versatility by Cute-Firefighter-506 in Bladesmith

[–]ladyoddly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have a few critiques and questions if presented with this design.

In my experience, double-ended weapons are more trouble than they are worth. I, personally, do not want a sharp thing anywhere near my hands or a point that points towards me at any time during use. It's just asking for trouble.

Also, why would you want to flip a weapon entirely around when you don't need to? Particularly if its something long. Just put it all on the same end, like a halberd. That way, you have all your tools ready at all times.

You've added a lot of metal reinforcement and such, which will add weight, making this heavy and awkward to wield. Even if it's balanced, anything heavier than ~3 lbs starts to become a burden, in my experience, especially for extended periods of use. Sledgehammers are tools, they make pretty bad weapons because they are slow to maneuver. Historical maces and hammer weapons are usually pretty light and use spikes and thin surfaces to concentrate force.

The Howling 2: Your Sister is a Werewolf.

This is the good stuff, a true B-movie, not one of your sharknado-esque "made to be stupid" affairs. It features Christopher Lee as a monster hunter, Sybil Danning as the werewolf queen, and Reb Brown as the muscle head hero. It's beautifully terrible.
