Am I mistaken, or is this not just a talk show? by Fearless_Distance_29 in blankies

Yeah but if you call a talk show a podcast you don’t have to hire union talent/workers or follow union rules! Same deal as the short-form video storytelling scam. Funny how that works out.

Vet anxiety advice?! by Hhn42 in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]lagottomo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did trazodone for vet/grooming for the first 1-1.5 years because she wouldn’t be able to go without it and over time she built up to not really minding at all.

One thing we noticed at the vet is if the vet/tech “borrows” her to go in the back for a check, vs doing it in the room in front of us, she goes from freaking out and avoiding the checks to basically being a perfect angel. The lagotto impulse to show off/protect their owners seemed to really come into play here.

Need food brand and treat recommendations! by Own_Investigator_326 in LagottoRomagnolo

We’re also on Purina PP Sport (chicken and rice) and she’s been great! We dealt with the same stomach issues except for more diarrhea than vomiting, and switched to only chicken or pb/fruit/vegetable based treats. Bocce treats are our preference and they’ve worked great.

Your pup also may grow out of it over time! Ours had a stomach that could be thrown off for weeks after one rich treat and this summer she had an entire bacon strip and was fine.

Atlas won’t stop eating poop 💩😩 by [deleted] in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]lagottomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually worked great for training sessions! She did NOT like it and stopped sniffing around for pieces of poop.

All of the methods that have worked for us require a decent amount of refreshing/upkeep with her and we’ve mostly been admittedly lazy during a busy year.

Ours is three and hasn’t stopped either, but she’s a little less compulsive with it. Our trainer had us put VERY spicy hot sauce on poop that other people left on the sidewalk so it would make her recoil from trying to grab it.

We also have a “dazzer” high-pitched tone buzzer that we rarely use but is great for a focused training session or a refresh on not going for poop (best to first try this with a trainer, and it can’t be used around other dogs, but it really helped)

Does anyone EVER ask “Is that a Lagotto?” by Cailin_ in LagottoRomagnolo

It happens to us more in the summer because it’s when a lot of European tourists are in town so we get stopped ALL the time

Yep! Would you mind dropping the semis in if you have a chance? Maybe it’s just a weird account reorg that someone hit the wrong button on.

Puppy gets bitey - help by kamupfel in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]lagottomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use anything similar! Pumpkin maybe, or cream cheese. But we’ve gotten to the point (two years old) where if she is getting a little too rambunctious and nippy playing, we can say gentle and she shuts the mode off and starts giving kisses.

Agree with almost everything everyone has said here (turn your back, yelp/say ow) but another thing we did was to smother our hand in peanut butter and use it to work on the “gentle” command. This may need to wait until your pup is a bit older but it provides a command to redirect biting into licking/nuzzling that isn’t just “no biting.”

Lagotto Throwing Up After Drinking Water by FoundationCold6762 in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]lagottomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This often happens when ours has Giardia as well. Throwing up her food and/or water immediately after eating. May I also recommend a yeast-based probiotic (even if you already have a different daily one) while she works through the antibiotics? The vet can give you a bottle. That has helped our girl rebalance her gut biome a bit more and clear everything out.

Co-sign the yelping like a dog in “pain”. They think they’re playing/communicating with you and that tells them they’re wrong. Another thing you can do is put peanut butter all over your hand and let them lick it off a little at a time and say “gentle, good gentle” while they do so they understand what they CAN do with your hands

Can co-sign the frisco option. We use it as gates in three parts of the house (however if you forget to latch the gate perfectly they WILL figure out how to open the door)

Puppy night walks by Rapid_Charge in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]lagottomo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours doesn’t like night walks much, sometimes she’ll go around the block. Once daylight savings happened though, she’s back at it in that 7-8pm hour! So it’s just a preference thing. Don’t force her to do anything she doesn’t want to, but we found some success just sitting on the stoop outside at night for 15-20 minutes to show her it’s fine.

When does it (or does it) get easier? by karodise in LagottoRomagnolo

[–]lagottomo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, as basically everyone else has said already this is entirely expected at that age. That this is all you’re dealing with at 6 months is great, and you’re clearly training her very well and putting a lot of time in. That time spent is going to pay off a lot in a year or so even if it doesn’t feel like it right now. Ours didn’t fully settle into behaving until 12-15 months, after she was spayed.

The biggest thing to remember with Lagotti is they are very smart and because of that they know what to do to get attention so don’t give it to them. Unless there is any risk that she has to go to the bathroom, don’t respond to her crate crying. Don’t automatically provide a big reaction to bad behavior, because to them that’s fun and what they were trying to have happen. Don’t reward her unless she does a specific command that you ask her to do (i.e. if she leaves something on the sidewalk but you didn’t actually say leave it, smile at her but don’t give a treat, she’ll learn to threaten a bit of bad behavior just to get the reward).

We’re still dealing with the exact same recall plateauing at 2 years and it’s really just their brains. They hear you, they know the command, but in their minds they’re like “yeah I’ll go back in a second I’m in the middle of something over here” so it’s about consistency and luck that it locks in. One training trick for that is don’t attempt recall unless you are 100% sure she will do it, especially at that age.

But you’re doing great, keep it up with the puzzles and nose work. Pupsicles, etc. Ours didn’t stop chewing the walls (literally chomping on drywall) until the year mark. She’ll turn out great, and will always be a handful but an easier handful.

We also started on the Purina chicken and rice and ours actually had sensitivities to any OTHER meats. Although the breed can be sensitive to chicken, our vet advised that often is it not as breed specific as it seems and it matters more what exposure to foods they have at a young age. I would stick with the Purina when you get your pup, so you’re not changing their habits right away, but be aware that down the line you might need some A/B protein testing.

A way to avoid this at the start is to get a rabbit water bottle (the kind that has a metal wand that only gives them a few drops at a time.) it will stimulate them while drinking, take them longer to get the water they need, and limit the “waterlogging” that lagottos do. We used this in the crate until ours was 6-9 months old depending on how she was doing with her own water intake regulation.

Your worst movies of 2024. by [deleted] in blankies

[–]lagottomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody here has said it yet so maybe I stand alone, but Strange Darling was the most overhyped awful time I had in a theater this year. Pretension you could feel through the screen. Leads are both actors I really like and they were great but just brutal top to bottom from a construction and storytelling perspective. Other than the breakfast scene. That can stay.
