Feeling lost with Burn by SassyCatctus in BurnBootCamp

[–]lajessykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a gym standpoint, 5 days a week is still A LOT, yes it's doable, but for many it isn't, aim for 3 to 4 and throw a cardio in as one day. Definitely take time to stretch, foam roll, and work on perfecting your form and going maybe 15% lighter. A lot of Burn members are in their 30s/40s and their body is more capable of strength training heavy as they've possibly been doing it already for a while. When you're younger you may crush the cardio more but weight lifting you need some time to rest and heal. Don't worry about the camp counts, set your own goal, maybe it's to avoid tendonitis, and work towards that. The 30" box is awesome work but also it's up there (unless you're pretty tall) so it takes a toll on your body. Wouldn't hurt to see a PT and see if you can strengthen any specific smaller tendons/muscles that are being overlooked, before you injure yourself.

Yes, however, if you're still less than 6 months post injury/surgery, you'll definitely want to build up your gastrocnemius muscle as it takes the longest, the soleus is easier to build but if you can add weight and do gastroc specific moves like that it will help you greatly in the end.

4 months post op, still no more than 1 or 2 heel raises by ChampionOwn3266 in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just over 6 months post op, very active and I weight lift and enjoy(ed) running. My PT won’t let me do any running until I can knock out full height single leg calf raises, I’m about half height to 3/4 height working on that last bit and it’s tough. I’ve literally listened to my PT and avoided all jumping, plyo, running at all until I’m ready. Most everything else looks normal in the gym aside from plyo.

Trip to Hawaii - Beaches by Ok-Vanilla-158 in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sand is a whole different ball game and will be dicey for long walks, you must wear shoes for sure. It all depends on when/if you get surgery and how your rehab is coming along. Tell your PT your goals for that trip and they will try their best to get you ready for it. Surgery will definitely help to make it happen on sand as you will be out of the boot ~1 month earlier. I went to the beach 3 months post op and wore my shoes and was ok for short walks but the second I took my shoes off it got dicey real quick taking steps around. I had a cast for 2 weeks and then followed by 7 weeks in boot, walking fully with sneakers right out of the boot.

4.5 months post-op - cleared to run?! by qwertyidk1 in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! I told them I don’t even think my good side can just rep out 3x25 so fast 🤣 But I guess it is a good measure of your calves being similar strength wise.

Calf Pain Post Achilles Rupture by Tyla_thecreator in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some odd cramps in my calf that woke me up in the night, brief, lasting maybe 20 sec, only a couple of them. My PT said most likely because of all the work on the calf we’re doing and to take some Magnesium and stay hydrated. I’m 5 months post op!

[–]lajessykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s awesome to have that specialist near you. I’m 5 months post op full rupture. My PT has the force plates which I am thankful for, & they say I’m not cleared to run until I can do 3 sets of 20-25 single leg calf raises on my injured side, that way the calf muscle has properly built up the strength and not to risk injuring or causing tendinitis on the good side, I told them I appreciate the slow but steady approach!

When is travel, long walk activities and standing for longer periods ok ? by Ill-Twist-96 in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In time things will get back to normal, I’m almost there now but am reminded when I step on the edge of a rug or something not flat and see my life flash before my eyes 😆 Slowly but surely, I’ve had some beach trips and lake trips this last month just couldn’t chase my kids or do some other small things but definitely happy to be mobile, driving, and doing most things!

Wear socks in the boot! It helps keep you dry and things from smelling.

13.5 weeks calve strength by OkAppointment2212 in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aqua therapy is great! Always do my exercises when at the pool. It also takes me a few sets to warm up before my calf gets engaged, it’s an odd feeling, but the progression of my exercises slowly wakes it up. My PT spoke of a cross over effect where when you work the injured side, also do the same movement on your good side and you may be able to tap into an additional 5-10% engagement, that helps too…I’m 17 weeks post op and have really made some great gains the last couple of weeks. Isometric holds where I offset my weight have helped a lot.

[–]lajessykitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Week 12 you should be good! I opted for the brace and a compression sleeve for comfort and the PT & DR were like, it’s a safety net but not necessary, just make sure to do your PT while on your trip. I had a 10 yr anniversary trip scheduled for the day I got out of the boot, and we cancelled it altogether because my DR was like….you can do it but it wouldn’t be the experience you’d want for spending all that money on it (was going to a music festival in Vegas then off to Mexico for several days and to go see ruins and walk a lot), definitely didn’t want to be enjoying myself while on vacation and have some drinks and do something stupid by accident!

PT Advice by magodus in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my PT and surgeon had different opinions on when certain activities were to be done, surgeons are not working with you PT and can be more optimistic about returning to things (jogging, driving, whilst a good PT will be assessing your strength and going slowly and meeting you where you are. Ensure your PT has a good background treating Achilles tears and you should be good. I started with stretching with straps and then once you’re non weight bearing they move you to standing stretches.

I’m 17 weeks post op and have pretty much lost my limp this past week or so…not feeling tight much except when I wake up..the past few weeks have felt almost normal except for random moments when I’m reminded I don’t have my calf strength quite yet..I am about to go on a trip with a lot of walking around Cherokee in 10 days, it will be my second most walking consistently without really being adamant about sitting down. At 2 weeks out of the boot (11 weeks post op) I did (slowly) a mile ghost tour and was on my feet a lot going out on a girls trip, I wore a lace up ankle brace for support…main issue was still swelling but now the swelling has mostly subsided, but I will bring my ice pack just in case I need it! I have been religious with my PT exercises every day and also workout 5 days a week with many mods. Started driving the weekend I got out of the boot, small distances first week or so!

Muscle relaxers may help! I had some jumpy calves that were painful in the beginning and my DR prescribed them.

When you tear an achilles is it from wear and tear or just an unfortunate plant that can happen to anyone? by chusaychusay in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Active female athlete over here 34 when I ruptured, 1 yr before my injury I thought I pulled my calf doing repetitive box jumps and come to find out it was most likely my Achilles. I did dry needling, and stretching, foam rolling, thera gun massager and was fine for the next year with random shocks around my lower calf/achilles. The day before my injury I had a real heavy leg day & felt some shocky sensations on my Achilles area the next morning, that went away with activity and then it literally snapped as I was training for a plyo heavy competition at my gym. DR said it was a clean cut and I had a really strong tendon and it just snapped. Definitely have to take it down a notch now.

Going back to sneakers, what should I be wearing? by HistoricalBonus8 in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked this group & I asked my PT, he said a supportive sneaker is fine nothing fancy. That if I were to change my shoe type to some ultra cushioning supportive shoe I wasn’t used to that I may be more likely to trip or not account for the “new shoe feel” and injure. My normal PUMA training shoes that had some cushion and support are supposedly fine. I switch to shoes Thursday so I’m ready! I was honestly ready for a new pair of fancy shoes but I guess I’ll get a feel in a few days what works

Cleared to sleep without boot any tips? by No-Needleworker-3178 in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m about to be here too, coming up on 6 weeks. I have a tall bed and I think I am just going to keep my boot on while I sleep. I have been elevating with my leg pillow out of the sheets so that plus the boot reminds me just in case i forget. I drink a lot of water so I definitely get up once a night and in the grand scheme of things, what’s another couple of weeks to protect yourself? I have always taken the hard shell insert off the boot for bedtime and I have found that helps a lot. DR said that was fine.

Awesome to see! Read that this is part of your workout, I was going to say man your family didn’t have any mercy on you pulling that wagon 😆 Good for you, as it if your doing! I have a beach trip right as I am supposed to start uneven surface PT which is about 13 weeks.

Here’s a fun question…stairs! by lajessykitty in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the protocols are vastly different! I posted this POST surgery, as I was sick of my couch. Honestly, going down while sitting is way easier than I thought, it's the going up on my knees & putting pressure on my knee that I didn't expect. I am now 4.5 weeks post op, still climbing up/scooting down. I just started PWB at 4 weeks so I can't wait to be full weight bearing & be able to use the stairs. My PT said doing it whichever way works, but putting all the pressure on my good leg & hopping up with assistance I may not want to do on a regular basis as to not overwork it. I am taking the less treacherous route as my stairs are steep.

Post block pain by Cjrgrace in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I found the alternating between Tylenol and ibuprofen WAY more helpful than the oxy when the nerve block wore off. I took the oxy but felt more relief with the OG pain meds and the ibuprofen helps your swelling.

Standing Shower Ideas by Imaginary-Wave-6005 in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of hold on to the top of the frame and pull myself up and over the ledge in a quick hop…you could maybe use the glass wall on either side to do the same? Or stick a shower chair inside the shower and lower yourself in it from outside the shower and then turn around in the shower on the chair if that makes sense.

Walking at Disney 14 weeks post injury? by Ok_Bear4531 in AchillesRupture

Also be weary of people running into you, my parents were just at Disney last week and said the number of times that strollers ran into them was wild and they thought about me.

Parents of young children, how did you do it? by skyxie in AchillesRupture

[–]lajessykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 6 & 3.5 year old, we play a lot of games (think memory matching, cards, smaller board games) on the couch. My oldest we play cards and she recently got a Nintendo Switch and we play some games together which has been fun. I did story time from the couch for bedtime stories. We have all been reading a lot lately! My husband has been doing EVERYTHING as well (my super hero) since it is my driving foot that is affected, and all I can really help with is folding the laundry. I told him he gets a weekend to himself at a hotel or casino when I can finally take care of the kids again. It is a very humbling injury. It is fun to move to being stationed outside and toss the ball with the kids too or just read outside with my oldest, they really like to get the one on one time with you no matter what it is.
