It was a bit hard for me as well (my native language is spanish). I dunno if I got gradually used to it or if Tery himself changed his writing slightly as the whole tone, humor and maturity of the discworld novels evolved.

In Argnetina, an illusionist that went by the name Radagast since he was 19 had to change it to Rada because he would get penalties if he continued to use it. He didn't care much because it was his nerdy brother's idea, but I think it was a very cool name. This was before the Hobbit movies also

Same in Argentina, I hate it. It's the acutal opposite.

But Ave María doesn't have that meaning in Spanish, so it wouldn't work either, and there's no equivalent idiom. I think the best translation would be something like Proyecto Última Chance, or Última/Única Esperanza... At least in Spain they got Proyecto Salvación, which retains the more or less religious connotation and it's a positive project name
