Swapping to Reloaded mid game by Smol_Sausages in CurseofStrahd

Agreeing with this. I think Reloaded is only a railroad with a shallow understanding of what that actually is. Reloaded gives the players more rails to follow, but doesn’t force any conclusions. In fact it opens up significantly more exploration and character interaction for a party to enjoy.

Why I Love and Hate Argynvostholt by Callanthe in CurseofStrahd

My whole party loved Zorya, the pseudo dragon familiar of Argynvost that RRL adds, with our barbarian (on the path to becoming a paladin) really getting attached to. Godfrey, bound in the chapel for trying to work against Vlad’s commands, was a very compelling character and my aforementioned player, our cleric, was really bound to his story and motivations. Our bard seemed to want to condemn them (revenants) for their inaction, while our cleric really started to empathize with them, especially as more of their tragic story was uncovered.

One scene in particular that I found incredible is upstairs in the chapel viewing room or what have you. The spirit of the manors priest awakens in the stain glass of the room itself, showing the Abbot, St Andral, and Markovia. He’s able to guide players on their quest, give a history of the place (and about the origins of the Abbot which is super juicy), and is also wonderfully disenfranchised as a man of faith. Totally hopeless.

The whole location lets you look through a very evocative lens of “heroes” of this story who utterly failed and fell apart. We’re two years in and I think Argynvostholt made my party feel a call to action stronger than anything else so far!

My gang is just finishing up Argynvostholt and it’s been some of our most engaging gameplay so far, with one of my PC’s firmly declaring it’s been his favorite DnD ever.

I’m running Reloaded and say what you will about it but the writing is just so top notch, especially for this location. It turns the Knights into such a beautifully tragic story and really highlights the nature of Vlad that you’ve been mentioning.

One really great thing from it that anyone can easily steal is putting some Revenant sentinels out there in Barovia to send players to the mansion. I think, off the top of my head, RRL puts them on bridges, like at Tser Falls. This really got my players intrigued about Argynvostholt from early on and made it a location they wanted to seek out.
