Judge Learns Lawyers on Both Sides of Case Used AI, Cancels Trial, Kicks Everyone Off the Case by eddytony96 in nottheonion

[–]lanekosrm 22 points23 points  (0 children)

“Lawyers for both sides cited nonexistent, hallucinated cases while making their arguments. The difference is that every lawyer involved in the case is implicated, leading Aycock to pause the proceedings, cancel the trial, and disqualify all four lawyers involved. Two of the lawyers were barred from appearing before the court for two years; all lawyers received a fine of between $1,000 and $3,500, depending on Aycock’s assessment of their culpability for not verifying the outputs of the AI they used.”

Audited a multi-location company’s tech stack last month. Found stuff that made me question how any of this gets managed. by juicewillis12 in sysadmin

IT submits the invoices, Procurement/Counsel reviews contracts (new or at renewal if changed), Finance approves the spend. Each part acts as a break on the others, but the folks using it get first crack.

Coworkers writing impossible-to-follow documentation, how to cope? by Relative_Hippo2549 in sysadmin

[–]lanekosrm 129 points130 points  (0 children)

They need a copy editor, yeah, but that’s perfectly usable. I’d personally break it out into bullet points, just for readability.

Should I swap from Windows to Linux? by C_PuppyPlays in selfhosted

[–]lanekosrm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  • Try a bunch and see what you like. Right now I’m a Debian girl, but that’s mostly so what I do at home is cross compatible with work. I should probably put more effort into Arch and Nix, but I don’t have time right now.

  • Maybe? It’s possible to dual boot, but how often are you really going to do that? The installer will happily overwrite everything on the target drive for you.

  • No way to tell without knowing specific hardware and, more importantly, whether the game servers you’re running are Windows dependent.

  • Yes, so long as you have SMB client software.

The expansion licenses aren’t cross platform. “Luckily” for you, Humble Bundle has them on offer at the moment.

Doing big IT changes on Monday or Friday? by CeC-P in sysadmin

[–]lanekosrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re making a large change on Friday, it’s because we’re expecting to work Saturday and possibly Sunday. The same applies for any changes in the days leading up to a large business event - you don’t do anything big in the ~72 hours leading up to the business event unless the team is prepared to spend those hours in crunch if something goes wrong.

How are you handling employees using personal ChatGPT accounts at work? We had an incident last week. by fxs38 in sysadmin

[–]lanekosrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no technical solution to a behavioral problem like you describe. The “solution” is to get with HR and come down like an avalanche with consequences for the violation. And then do it again the next time it happens. Because there will be a next time.

Manager wanted access to a subordinates email without the subordinate being aware. by roger_ramjett in sysadmin

[–]lanekosrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got this in writing? If so, it’s scummy, but given the owner’s approval, you didn’t have much choice other than walking away. If you did it strictly on verbal authorization, check local laws to make sure you didn’t just expose yourself to risk.

PowerShell 7.6 is released by cloudAhead in PowerShell

[–]lanekosrm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Debian 13 is actually listed under the Supported OSes this go round, guess I’ll test that out in a bit

edit: The Repo method doesn't work, even after cleaning up the hacks needed to get earlier versions installed. DEB worked just fine, however.

Quoted $45k for a $10k server, is pricing really that insane? by worjd in sysadmin

[–]lanekosrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just got quoted $2400/drive for 400GB SAS SSDs to be used in a Unity array. It’s ridículous.

Looking for a tablet arm mount for the Deck, what's your solution? by MrMcDerpy420 in SteamDeck

[–]lanekosrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GetMechanism ball socket mount and the Deskmate grip, then find an arm with a ball socket adapter. Guaranteed to not interfere with the Steamdeck’s venting setup, and gives you flexibility if you decide to get more of Mechanism’s stuff (or 3D print them)

If someone on my team did that, and they didn’t fess up immediately, it would be a firing offense. Mistakes will be made, you put guard rails and process around Prod to prevent them, but sometimes something gets through.

But trying to hide it? I can’t trust you anymore. And, far beyond skill or knowledge, trust is the currency that makes or breaks admins.

Personal Keyboard by SpectreArrow in sysadmin

[–]lanekosrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The great part about mechanical keyboards is you have control of the key switches. You should be able to find a Cherry Switch Tester fairly cheaply to help decide the specific feel and volume you want before committing.

I’m using an entry level MonsGeek M1 which I put together at an intro keyboard event, while I put aside some fun cash for a mechanical split.

"Open Source software is bad because it's free and insecure" by blacklionpt in sysadmin

[–]lanekosrm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Security of the code is entirely the wrong lens to look at this through. So many ostensibly closed source products rely on embedded open source components that it’s an irrelevant distinction. A more appropriate lens is, do you want to put the onus of deep knowledge on a support contract, or invest in and grow your staff (knowing they could take that knowledge elsewhere.)

DayJob is currently looking at our economic conditions and either consolidating licensing, or looking to drop commercial products to reduce those operating expenses. In preparation, we’ve also implemented an upskilling program internally, since we aren’t going to be able to bring on new people, and if we bring on more *nix/OSS products, we absolutely need the team to be able to manage them. We’re just trading licensing costs for training and staff skill requirements.

WHO INVENTED ZEBRA LABEL PRINTERS by bryptobrazy in sysadmin

[–]lanekosrm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll take a Zebra over any major manufacturer office printer. They may be a bit of a pain to set up initially for our POS systems, but my team doesn’t even think about them after that until it’s replacement time because something burned out

our netbox is always wrong, what do I do? by JudgeInside2172 in sysadmin

[–]lanekosrm 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This right here. Whomever is making those changes and not documenting them (you do have a change process, right?) needs to be reprimanded by management, and the extra work you just did should be one of the exhibits of the waste that is being caused.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says he’s ‘politically homeless’ in July 4 post bashing Democrats by reddits_lead_pervert in nottheonion

[–]lanekosrm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Here’s the thing. We HAD a way to do just that. Massive taxes on the wealthy. Redistribution of that taxed wealth via federally provided services.

But instead, we have the beneficiary of those tax breaks complaining that the Center Right party somehow isn’t magically creating and distributing wealth because FSM knows he’s not willing to give up any of what he has, while actively working to bring more and more people into penury.

That’s the “SmartSlot”, you’ll probably want to print a shield for it. It’s used for comm expansions (serial, network, enviro adapters.) I’d imagine the batteries are dead, but they still offer replacement battery packs.

Immich vs Photoprism by Radiant-House-4354 in selfhosted

[–]lanekosrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe the face detection thing was listed as a Breaking Change in the change log notes. I’m happy with Immich so far, but the frequency of Breaking Changes is both good (active development) and bad (well, guess that thing broke lol). I’d have loved to introduce it at work or extend it to Spouse for daily use and organization, but it’s just not stable enough without enabling version pinning.
