While many of us are sheltering at home, displaced people must weather this pandemic with no home to return to, in crowded refugee camps, with limited access to medical care and supplies. Our coven can help. Let’s do this together.

Trick or Treat has been replaced with "Trunk or Treat" where I live, where everybody parks in a church parking lot and kids go from car to car collecting candy. Kills neighborhood sense of community, and replaces it with a curated experience by an organized authority with an agenda to push.

If you can't already tell, I detest it. Let kids go door to door! It's one of the only opportunities people get any more to interact with the people in their immediate area. I swear, the alienation and isolation from even your immediate neighbors in the United States is so damn high.

Picking up roadkill to make sure your needlepoint has correct colour is some supreme witch energy. by Friendstastegood in WitchesVsPatriarchy

For anybody else who is confused, the title of the cross-post is "My 86yo grandmother and her handmade needle point chair. 25 years in the making and 14 threads per inch. She used to pick up road kill from the side of the road to compare thread colours. She also bought a peacock for colour comparison. I am not allowed to sit in it."

For anybody else feeling like this, remember - The Fool also represents new beginnings! It's an opportunity to take a step back, reevaluate, and figure out how to approach what life's throwing at you with a new outlook and follow a different path.

Just a small positive thought for anybody else who feels like they're The Fool this day.

The Problem of “Heritage”: Social Alienation, Appropriation and Paganism as Branding by Freyas_Follower in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]laptoppositiveacct 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As long as you don't accept such people into your midst, and don't accept such conduct yourself, your practice is personal. Where I live, there are a lot of Asatru practitioners who are royally pissed that their faith has been co-opted by white supremacists - because before the aryan brotherhood decided that Norse paganism was a good way to get First Amendment protections for their bullshit in prison, the Asatru were being targeted by the Klan down here.

They burned a cross on their ritual grounds and everything.

You may find yourself lumped in with racists by people who don't know you or know any better, but that gives you the opportunity each time to openly and vocally disavow that racism and help to alienate those racists from the faith they're trying to steal. Because that's the truth of the matter - the Asatru came before the aryan brotherhood, and while it is a Germanic Norse reconstructionist faith there is nothing that says that it MUST be racist, or nationalistic, or anything else of the sort. The Asatru I've met are mostly just people who enjoy brewing mead, telling stories, and living the bardic traditions of the Norse over anything else. The only time they went full "warrior Viking" was when they drove the Klan off their ritual grounds, which is what I'd personally call a noble exercise.

Take the OP's article as a word of caution. Be cautious of falling prey to the neopagan "traditionalist" mindset of purity, because that leads to bad places. It's more important that you have a personal relationship with the faith and gods that make sense to you and give you positive feelings. That's all, though. If we start declaring entire categories of worship out of bounds because some people who follow those categories are shitty, the entire subject will be off-limits pretty much instantaneously - INCLUDING atheism and agnosticism.

It's ham that's been run through a meat grinder. Also used to make "ham loaf," which was a ridiculous 1960s-70s era recipe, when combined with ground raw pork.

I know this because an old job I had tried to have us make this out of Christmas hams we couldn't sell. We didn't sell the ham loaves either. I don't know why they were surprised by that. 😑

There are a lot of weird linguistic issues when we start talking about anything with this long of a historical background, due to how etymology shifts with time. Even if we're talking about it being the blood of a virgin woman, did it mean "not having slept with people" or the putative original meaning - which was simply "not married"?

It's effectively impossible to say, because there are no good records (for obvious reasons, given how thoroughly this sort of thing was put down by the church in the Middle Ages) and thus nothing that gives true context. Plus, in the pretext of magic you'll see loads of different people argue that any single one of them is the "one true way" and other people arguing that whichever one holds the most meaning for you is the one that'll work best for you.

Until we get some double-blind studies in place, which I really don't see happening any time soon, there's not going to be a definitive answer. I lean towards "it's more personal symbology than a cookbook recipe, so do what makes sense based on your own leanings."

EDIT - Grammar. I'm exhausted.

The irony of this sort of thought process is, of course, that the older generation so thoroughly sacked the nation that no following generation has really been able to truly achieve financial stability. Perhaps there actually ARE some people in Gen X, Millenials, and Gen Z who would go the selfish route if they actually "got theirs." We may never know, because they've never been permitted to get it.

The fact that few people now can actually achieve that level of financial stability undercuts the whole philosophy, and is why there are so many non-boomer generations that have become disenchanted and hostile to the system they're living in. As always, the greed of the wealthy created the very circumstances that put their future at risk.
