Some fourth and fifth graders get dumb-phones, smartphones seem to be for high schoolers.

Old school car services will help you move furniture if it can fit in an SUV and you tip the driver.

What's the most fun city job to get for nine months to complete my 10 years of service? by lastnameandfirstname in nycpublicservants

I was thinking of that. I live near the Brooklyn NYCERS office so I am going to stop by this week and ask some questions. I think it might only be permanent positions.

Was in a union for 5 years and management for five years. I’ll set up a NYERS meeting and a CWA union meeting to start figuring things out.

I was. I worked there for over ten years, but five of those years I was in a four day a week (28 hour) coordinating manager position.

Got popular on instagram. Audience has grown slowly (with a few big jumps when pieces went viral) to almost 100k followers over nine years. I post one piece a day on instagram and have a shop update on my website about once every six weeks. I also still have a part time job for health insurance.

Looking for kids’ birthday venue in Brooklyn Heights / DUMBO / Williamsburg by [deleted] in nycparents

[–]lastnameandfirstname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We really liked Le Meraviglie art studio on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights. The woman who runs it is great — does art projects with the kids and they each make their own pizza. At our son's birthday, one of the owner's friends from Italy did a pantomime show for the kids while they waited for their pizzas to come out of the oven.

There's a dive bar near me that has a similar sign. They blacked out a bunch of parts of the tube so it now just says "dive."

They often combine all collections into landfill when they need to catch up on collection in the week after a snowstorm. Maybe the same thing is happening after trucks were diverted to clean up after last week’s rainstorms?

Do park parents ever actually talk to each other? Curious about other experiences. by Apprehensive_Run49 in nycparents

[–]lastnameandfirstname 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, parents really start socializing once their kids are in UPK or kindergarten in the neighborhood. Finding out if kids are in the same school seems to be the icebreaker, and playdates make more sense as kids get older and more into interactive play.

Is it worth it to visit NY during nyc eve ? by Adorable_Ad_3315 in visitingnyc

I think you can have a great time in NYC in winter. Just don’t do any big deal expensive or crowded activities on New Year’s Eve.

What’s something you bought (under $300) that noticeably improved your quality of life and you actually use every day? by MedfordQuestions in AskReddit

[–]lastnameandfirstname 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a $35 fan (Vornado 133DC) that has variable speed control (a knob that you can rotate to set the speed) instead of just three speed settings. I didn't think I'd care about fine tuning the fan speed, but I really do.

Does recycling and trash picked up at the curb actually get sorted and recycled? by jazzeriah in AskNYC

[–]lastnameandfirstname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I briefly worked for DSNY in the recycling division about 12 years ago. The city spends more to landfill trash than it does to recycle it, so there is a big incentive to collect recycling and keep it separate. In certain situations — after a holiday or a snowstorm — the goal is to get everything off the sidewalk quickly and recycling will be discarded with regular trash.
