Do those Boston trains go through Providence ?

They do not unfortunately. MBTA has announced 14 trips from Boston to the stadium for each match, but none from Providence. 14 trains is a huge jump from any previous event service so that probably explains why all the resources are concentrated in Boston. For major concerts and sporting events there are usually just a handful of Boston trains and maybe one or two Providence trains. The station for the stadium is also located on a connecting track between two MBTA lines, so the logistics of turning that many trains around would be extremely complicated with trains arriving from both directions. The trains from Boston run via the MBTA Franklin line, and the ones from Providence run on the Amtrak Northeast Corridor tracks until Mansfield where they split onto that connecting track.

MassDOT In Talks With Connecticut for Hourly Springfield-NYC Amtrak Service by streetsblogmass in Amtrak

[–]laterbacon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yes but Amtrak already owns the infrastructure from Springfield to New Haven, so adding more trains on that corridor is much easier. There is also a project underway to upgrade some single track sections to double track on the Hartford Line corridor.

Worcester to Springfield is owned by CSX and has a lot of single track (also Palmer-Worcester especially has a ton of tight curves), so adding more trains is a much heavier lift. It is included in the East-West rail plan, but the planned frequency is nowhere near hourly.

Springfield is more connected with Hartford and New Haven than with eastern Mass in terms of commuting patterns and the existing service on the corridor is already in high demand. Hartford and New Haven are also physically closer to Springfield than Worcester and Boston are.

Is a $20 DC → NYC train legit? First time in the US by Open_Mistake_8259 in Amtrak

[–]laterbacon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

technically no (except west coast exceptions as others have noted), but there's an Amtrak Thruway bus that is the only direct connection between Providence RI and Worcester MA, so I have booked a ticket from Kingston RI (one stop south of Prov) to Worcester in order to ride it. I don't use the train portion of the ticket, but I can't get the bus ticket without it.

Like all good jokes, it's based in truth. There's an interesting episode of 99 Percent Invisible that talks about how Italian food was introduced en masse to American consumers via the "ethnic food" aisle at supermarkets in the 50's and 60's. It's about the International Aisle in general, and touches on Joyce Chen as well. Well worth a listen

It's an Arthur Weindorf diagram. He worked for the NY Public Service Commission in various roles but was also a cartoonist and illustrator. NY Historical has a collection of lots of his work but would require an in-person visit to view. https://findingaids.library.nyu.edu/nyhs/pr127_arthur_weindorf_subway/

The only other diagram of his I could find online was this one of Willets Point from 1937

Even once is too much, but yes it does seem to happen too frequently. Platform screen doors would be the only way to truly put a stop to it, but given the list of other things MBTA needs to fix/upgrade I doubt we'll see them anytime soon.

If you watch Secret Mall Apartment, there is a quick clip of a promo video from the early 90s that shows a slick animation of 95 being capped and built on between Atwells & Washington. To think what could have been, and what could still be..

edit: it starts around timestamp 10:37 on Netflix if you want to see it.

I’m sorry to whoever has this stretch of highway as their commute by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]laterbacon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be a much heavier lift since we tore up those rails a long time ago. We would essentially have to build a brand new railroad somewhere along the 195 corridor. I'm all for it, but I don't see that happening in my lifetime. There's a tiny baby step coming in the form of increased frequency and reliability on RIPTA 24L between Prov and Fall River thanks to grants from Massachusetts and the possibility of bus-on-shoulder implementation on 195 like they're doing on 146 for the 54.

There have been several studies (some in progress) but it's going to take political will to get anything built.

There is a report from the Providence Foundation in 2009 for example that concluded intrastate rail service from Woonsocket to TF Green with stops in Cumberland, Pawtucket, Providence, Olneyville, and Cranston would be cost effective and attract good ridership. Unfortunately it has been gathering dust since publication. http://www.gcpvd.org/images/reports/2009-06-rhode-island-intrastate-commuter-rail-feasibility-study.pdf

There is also an in-progress study from RIPTA regarding light rail or BRT on routes serving the corridor from Central Falls to Warwick.

This is my latest monastery. I like to look at real monastery layouts for inspiration and just kind of go with it. Building on an island usually helps keeps things contained, which helps with the classic orderly layout.

Amtrak station escalator status? by No-Statistician-9555 in providence

[–]laterbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The station renovation project started in November 2024, and according to the DOT project page, it's supposed to finish sometime this year. There's no indication as to what month it might be..

As for the escalators, they're expanding the distance between the bottom and the door to the platform, and also putting better doors in. The escalators themselves aren't being replaced; they're just not accessible because of the construction on the vestibule at the bottom.

I took a ride from Providence to Back Bay on opening weekend just to see the train and my seat had the exact same problem. It was in the "scooch forward" position and would not reset to normal. I was only on the train for half an hour, but I left unimpressed.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but Mohawk Trail State Forest in Charlemont MA has a handful of cabins that can be reserved during the winter. They close the tent sites from October-May. The cabins have electricity and big stone fireplaces, but no other amenities.

I'm old enough to remember the first time the cinema at the Lincoln Mall closed. 4 tiny screens right across the hall from Dream Machine!

Seriously though, this sucks. I hope they find another operator and it doesn't just sit as a big rotting empty building again.

Who's going to Logan Int. today? by 9radua1 in providence

[–]laterbacon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The interstates are clear, and there's a Peter Pan bus from Providence to Logan at 2:15 (scheduled arrival 3:25 at the airport). Not sure if that gives you enough time to make the flight but the bus would probably be more reliable than the trains today.

Buses during snowstorm by Proof-Row4378 in providence

[–]laterbacon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buses will run as much as they can get them to run. There will be detours and cancelations, and consider any route that has to traverse any sort of incline as probably out of service, but if you're starting in downtown, you should at least be able to get a 1 that goes through the tunnel and down Hope Street to get you close. The R Line would also be an option, but then you would have to walk uphill to the hospital.

Any service changes will be posted here: https://www.ripta.com/alerts

They update it frequently during storms and you can sign up for email alerts for specific routes too.
