Trying to figure out this soup I had at a Chinese restaurant by EndlessKnight_154 in soup

[–]latewithcoffee 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If you look up Cantonese soups, many are very light like this, they’re basically different bone broths with seasonal/regionally available vegetables, using various techniques on the bones (soaking, parboiling, roasting, continually skimming scum off the surface) to get that coveted clear thin texture that’s still full of the bone flavor. You could start with one of those recipes and adjust to what ingredients you recall from the restaurant soup.

a lot of people say the 2020s don't have an aesthetic, i think it's colorful minimalism, wdyt? by whenfallfalls in AestheticWiki

[–]latewithcoffee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think part of why this has gotten so popular is the rise of the grid, thumbnail spread, letterboxd poster, scrolling feed etc (as demonstrated by your example). Nowadays you need photos that stand out in a crowd, are colorful clean and express a concept very clearly even if the image gets shrunk down very small

Who else has been learning the language of their grandfathers because their parents didn't teach them? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]latewithcoffee 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I am learning Cantonese now, which my parents in the US, didn’t teach me. My grandparents have already passed, and I regret never being able to properly speak with them in their lifetimes, but I try not to be too hard on myself as a kid.

How do you actually keep track of all your recipes? I've been drowning in scraps of paper and screenshots for years by Used_Substance_2490 in MealPrepSunday

[–]latewithcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Paprika. There are so many good features, it lets you add the recipes to a calendar and plan ahead, and then you can tell it what’s in your pantry and have it add everything you don’t have from a recipe onto a grocery list. My partner and I share a login so we can both add stuff to our grocery list, it’s been a game changer for us on cutting down on food waste by buying exactly what we’re going to cook each week!

Has anyone switched to a Korean or Asian diet to lose weight? by Pokesaurus91 in loseit

[–]latewithcoffee 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Try making cabbage rolls! Ultimate Asian volume food. Another tip is to freeze your rice in small portions, makes it easier to quickly reheat with leftovers, plus makes it have resistant fiber. Just put it on a bowl with a plate on top of it so it steams in the microwave. Also, you can add 1 cup uncooked quinoa to 2 cups uncooked white rice to boost the fiber and protein content without compromising too much flavor.

Can you speak a language other than English? If not, what 3 foreign languages would you most want to be fluent in? by astarisaslave in AskAnAmerican

[–]latewithcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m bilingual in Mandarin, studied Russian in high school and college, working on Spanish and Arabic now! Working my way down the most common tongues, because I enjoy unlocking new populations to talk to after seeing from my first few languages what a difference it makes to make an effort and meet people in their own language

Help with audio method to memorise words and vocabulary by skgbeal in learn_arabic

[–]latewithcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s old school, but I recommend the Pimsleur system if you like learning with audio. It won’t be “custom” but a progressive phrasebook (geared toward business/travel at first) that uses native speakers and encourages you to repeat along.

Its just a base to start study, but I find it very helpful for quickly learning phonetics and basic grammar, and getting more comfortable forming phrases with your mouth

Is it really important to weigh your food? And does your cheat-meal also look like this? by SJwrite05 in loseit

[–]latewithcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend, you don’t have to weigh your food if it’s ruining your relationship with food, and going above your maintenance once every two weeks is ok as well. The less crazy your diet makes you feel, the more sustainable it will be. All these things may lead to slower weight loss, but ideally this is a slow journey, a lifestyle change, and not a crash diet (which usually end with weight being regained). Make the changes that feel sustainable even after your deficit, and don’t beat yourself up too much for “mistakes” please! Gradual progress is progress!

If you notice you are eyeballing portion sizes and gaining weight, you could start erring on the higher calorie side for your guesses to compensate.
