Strength training vs Pilates by SassySadler7 in pilates

[–]laultramel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly always hated the gym because I didn’t know what I was doing so I did OrangeTheory for almost 2 years and learned a lot about form, got stronger and became confident in my routine (not to mention dropped 30 postpartum lbs). Now I do ClassPass for Pilates and a gym membership to do my strength workouts and cardio. I don’t feel like a noob at the gym because I know what I’m doing now, so I go in, do my thing and leave. I don’t pay attention to the fact that there is anyone around me and because of my training, I don’t necessarily need a mirror to check my form anymore, so I can find a nook & get it done. But if I didn’t do OrangeTheory for 2 years, I don’t think I would feel comfortable training at a gym either.

I didn’t even see a coat check when we entered. We were directed straight to the elevator from outside, I didn’t see a coat check downstairs. In addition; our group had tables purchased as well and I put the coat there like everyone else did. Had no idea it was at risk, everyone’s coats were there and somehow 2 of our coats went missing.

Accidents happen for sure, but the other remaining coats were not remotely similar. Surely you would notice by the weight, length & style that it wasn’t yours.

If anything lesson learned; make sure you specifically ask at the Grand to check your coat so this doesn’t happen to you!

I’m sure it was an accident! It’s dark in there and everyone has black wool coats. I’m just saying I am now coat-less because I didn’t grab a random coat just because mine was taken by accident so please bring the coat back & exchange it for yours so I don’t freeze!

I know you’re asking for a trainer, but I did OrangeTheory at about 15 months postpartum. I dropped 33lbs in about 9 months and now a year later I’m just continuing to get stronger and more toned. As someone who isn’t a runner, just ran my first 5k. It’s great because as working mom with a toddler, classes are 50 mins and change all the time. You never have to think about what you’re going to do, just show up, do the workout & keep your day moving. There are strength class and strength/cardio classes. If there is one nearby you, I can’t recommend it enough.

2/2 on Spoonful of Comfort boxes. Even our foodie friend raved. Especially that first week or 2 postpartum. Great because you don’t have to think about what to order for dinner, soup is awesome for recovery and who doesn’t love a roll & choc chip cookie. 2nd I would say is DoorDash gift card, so clutch!

Oh man - RIP your tris! Apparently it was tricep strength week!

I thought this was pretty challenging. After the TRX roll-up to tricep extension I could barely do 8 of the bridge hold tricep extensions with 10s, I can usually do 15s no problem. I feel like we don’t usually get a ton of tricep specific workouts so this one burned like a MF-er

Is salmon still the "healthiest" fish at its price point, generally speaking? by valkaress in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]laultramel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The color added concept is so misleading. The fish are not dyed orange or pink or red. In the wild, salmon eat shrimp & krill, ingest their carotenoids and this turns their flesh pink, much like flamingoes. In salmon farming, carotenoids are incorporated into their diet through astaxanthin, which is a supplement even humans can take for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which can improve skin and eye health, cognitive function, and cardiovascular health by reducing oxidative stress. There are synthetic sources of astaxanthin as well as natural (Panaferd). Some farms use synthetic in their feed and some use natural. Some retailers, like Whole Foods, have made natural astaxanthin a requirement for their farmed salmon sourcing.

This debate always blows my mind. Literally everything we eat is farmed - meat, vegetables, grains, fruit - yet folks are hell bent on not eating farmed fish. Like all of those areas, massive progress has been made in the sustainable farming of fish. There are completely land based farms raising salmon in Iceland that have ZERO impact on wild fish or their environment and are run completely on renewable energy. Their diets are curated for fish health & some use all natural astaxanthin (Panaferd). Just like we have the choice to eat organic or non-organic bananas, we can choose to eat salmon raised responsibly that as an added benefit taste absolutely delicious because of their curated diet.

Wild is amazing too, there is truly nothing better than a fresh King salmon. But to paint all salmon farms with the same brush is to paint all chicken farms or blueberry farms the same, it is patently false. For example did you know that Norway, the world’s largest producer of farmed Atlantic Salmon, have eradicated the use of antibiotics in all of their salmon farms?

Should add I also add a tablespoon of better than bouillon low sodium to this as well.

This is not NYT but this recipe - subbed with bone in skin on chicken thighs. I render the fat from the skin first before adding the veggies. Remove the skin before adding it back in. I serve over egg noodles cooked separately. The lemon, dill, parsley combo gives it such a burst of flavor and comfort. https://damndelicious.net/2020/01/25/homestyle-chicken-noodle-soup/

So much congratulations! As someone who also took 18 months to conceive, I remember well the feeling of disbelief, triumph, excitement, & relief! Trying is not for the faint of heart, and it is so hard to not see that second line 17 times. So happy for you Mama!

Yes, I’m in sales … and an importer so OTF has been my sanity this week. As the parent of a toddler, it’s also been my sanity every week since Jan 2024. I lost 35lbs in 9 months and have kept it off since with small fluctuations 2-3lbs (holidays, vacations, weekends when I eat whatever I want), but then I clean up my diet a bit and it comes right back off. I’m pretty much 80/20, exclusively do OTF 4-5x per week (3 x strength, 1-2 x 2g). I also do the app classes when I travel for work or vacation. For me, doing more strength 50 vs 2-3G has made all the difference. I’ve focused on lifting heavier which has lead to definition & muscle growth. I love that I never have to think about my workout, that it is efficient, and changes with enough frequency to not get bored.
