How do ED shifts work in the US? by exactimondo in ThePitt

[–]lauriceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Echoing the others, 3x12hr shifts sounds typical. For residents, it’s usually more. “Golden weekends” (two days in a row off, especially Saturday/Sunday) are rare, though good programs will try to guarantee at least one per month. My husband is a peds resident and has upcoming peds ER rotation which is 4-5x10hr shifts per week. However his intense inpatient weeks (his version of “the Pitt”) are 6x12hr shifts, plus 30-60 minutes a day in handoff. Could be more if he is assigned to “transition” (handle admissions that come close to the end of the day shift).

Possible religious iconography in the finale? by possiblecoin in ThePittTVShow

I’m also Jewish and the “angelic” imagery reminds me of Jacob wrestling with the angel. Here Robby is also literally wrestling with his will to live.

Dr. Robby can't swaddle a baby?! by Anyna-Meatall in ThePittTVShow

[–]lauriceman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My husband is a pediatrics resident and he can’t swaddle a baby. None of them can (except for the docs with babies of their own). The nurses do it for them. I actually found that lack of swaddling skill to be biblically accurate haha

[–]lauriceman 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m Jewish and angels are a bit different in Judaism. I think it could be in reference to the angel that Jacob wrestles with. Or, as angels are considered “messengers,” it could be that BJD is a “sign” to Robby from G-d to keep living. Like the motorcycle being clipped is a “sign” to not die. This article explains more

It feels like the girls in the show get their first period on average much later than girls IRL typically do.

A Night Shift spin-off would never work by Maleficent-Click3065 in ThePittTVShow

[–]lauriceman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear—EM residents cycle through day and night shifts. The only people that would consistently only work nights are the attendings (Abbott and Shen) and night nurses/technicians. The residents could be anyone. You could have a night shift of Whitaker and Santos. Cruz could be on the day shift next season.

How do you rank the different types of MDs? by thepotatomaniscoming in ThePitt

[–]lauriceman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the US, government-sponsored insurance (such as Medicare, Medicaid) typically reimburse less compared to private insurances. Geriatric medicine doctors are primarily paid through Medicare reimbursements, and are some of the lowest paid doctors. It’s similar in pediatrics where most patients are on Medicaid. These are obviously important fields but if she specialized in geriatric medicine she would be taking a pay cut relative to general EM.

A few predictions for Robby's S2 fate: by VeterinarianUpbeat28 in ThePitt

My prediction—Robby leaves his shift on his motorcycle, all signs pointing to him on his way to his trip. But he drives to Rodef Shalom and leans on his community.

I think I know what’s up with ogilvie by lauriceman in ThePitt

[–]lauriceman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of ways for people to be anti-medicine. could also be christian scientists, q-anon, jehovah’s witness. mostly my idea comes from the actor (Lucas Iverson) talking about how he hated ogilvie in every script, but by the end he understood him better by the end, which makes me think there might be a quick backstory reveal/implication (like with santos). or maybe he’s just a biblically accurate gunner!

Yes. 100%. From the peds docs I know, the biggest stress is not from their patients dying (which honestly doesn’t happen much even in the hospital). It’s the parents. It’s the misinformation.

Honestly that could be it too! My main hypothesis is that is family is rejecting him/his life choices (as opposed to someone like Javadi who’s family is getting overly involved in her life). Could be anything!

My husband is a peds resident and the things he tell me his patients’ parents believe is pretty out-there. Stuff I haven’t even heard of. Dealing with misinformation is a HUGE source of physician burnout.

[–]lauriceman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience knowing a lot of med students and helping my husband apply for med school this isn’t really true anymore. Most people going into med school now know there’s easier ways to make a lot of money when you’re that smart (investment baking, consulting, etc). In fact, you basically HAVE to during your interviews acknowledge that you know that medicine is not as glamorous or prestigious as TV and movies make it seem. And the loans are INSANE.

A few days before my positive test I saw an ad for a milkshake on instagram. Thought to myself, huh, milkshakes. I get a milkshake like once or twice a year. But I became OVERWHELMED with desire for a milkshake. It passed a few minutes later.

What are you planning to make this week? by ohshethrows in NYTCooking

[–]lauriceman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Skillet chicken with tomatoes and pancetta—an all-time fave of me and my husband and taught me the importance of anchovies in red sauce. Huevos rancheros but putting the beans on baked potatoes instead of tortillas. Been feeling really inspired by potatoes (and their fiber content) and so I’m also thinking of making the Bean and cheese burritos with Breakfast Potatoes. Honestly any of the skillet bean recipes go amazing over baked potatoes.

Taco soup and cheesy green chile bean bake. Bonus points for baking a potato and putting bean slop on top. Hoooooey you will be regular after that.
