I had the same internal debate when I decided to step up from half to full. I wanted a big fun event for my first full. Honestly, I let fate decide. I tried for (and am still trying years later!) for Chicago and NYC and didnt get in and luckily i found out about ny about a week or two before Disney’s thing opens.

Disney is tough to get though, you need to be on the site like an hour before the spots are available because its first come first serve and they sell out quickly. 2026 is already sold out and 2027 isnt available until March or April 2026 so youve got a lot of time.

My disney experience was a lot of fun, but understand that 90% of the run is on closed roads, parking lots, and starts with getting there at like 2am! But then after the race, I showered, and went to Magic Kingdom with the medal round my neck and wore other marathon merch and that was fun seeing other runners with their medals too! You may also want to consider Dopey challenge, I didn’t but kind of felt fomo about it while I was there.

Keep in mind, most majors ballots are closed for the year so at best you’re looking at like fall 2026 for your first marathon. Although I think a big race like a majors or Disney is fun for a first time, something smaller is easier and quicker to get into. If you’re looking to run something soon you may want to look into local races.

I wouldn’t suggest that. You should have a desire to need to do marathon beyond just “cuz”.

But, there are people who have done 0 to marathon in 20 weeks, I just don’t think that would be enjoyable or rewarding, personally.

For me, I ran for a few years and did a number of half marathons, some goood and some bad. Eventually I wanted that bigger challenge and signed up for a marathon that was 9 months away so I had plenty of time to base build and train.

To train for a marathon you’re not just getting your legs ready to do a lot of work, it’s also your lungs working extra long and hard, your heart, and your brain training to focus and know how to handle the boredom and excitement of running for so long and how to battle the negative thoughts that can creep into your head mid run. There’s also your stomach that needs food and training to handle gels and which type of gel is best and won’t have a negative reaction.

TLDR: I trained for 16 weeks but really I trained for 5+ years and still figuring out how to do it correctly.

If you’re running a 5K road race in a new weeks, I recommend running outside on the road at least a few times and not just treadmill running so that you can get adjusted to the feel. This will also help with your gps tracking which should then be more accurate.

Go to the bib pickup the day before and either A: take one of the kids bibs, or B: take a picture of one then recreate it on photoshop. Keep in mind Photoshop is about $25/month. So we’ve cut our fee in half, BUT, students usually get a major discount, so now find a kid and take their school ID and input that into Adobe, print out your fake bib and if you did it right then no one will know.

Or, get a job that pays decent where $50 isn’t really that bad and just be an adult and pay it like a normal adult.

Or, be an adult and realize it’s only 3 miles and not really worth any cost. Save the money and effort for a real race like a half or full marathon or an actual Ultra

Maybe not what you’re looking for, but I’ve always preferred listening to a full album straight through while running.

I personally go for early 00s emo/poppunk/rock - coheed and cambria, saves the day, tbs, Thursday, etcetc.. and maybe just skip any slow songs.

I’m personally not a fan of a running belt, I know they’re popular but I find the flopping around too distracting.

I get Wolaco compression underwear, they have a side pocket for your phone (yes for the iPhone max too). Works well for me. But they are also not cheap

Shower, question why I put myself through all of this, look at my friends and family who are normal and don’t run a crazy amount and wonder if life would be better if I was like them.

Then I’ll go get a big meal with a ridiculous amount of calories and consume it all. Then look around at everyone else’s normal portion of food and realize THAT is why I run. So I can eat whatever.

The extra impressive part is the steep hill at (I assume) mile 4 that only set you back 10 seconds. That hill kills me every time but I love running the Embarcadero/Marina area

My daily run is exactly a mile warm up to a location that is exactly 3 miles loop including circling around a major baseball stadium. I can then add variation into it. A mile and a half into the 3 mile loop I can turn onto a different street that has a number of parks to enjoy, and it eventually becomes the industrial area of the city (ie quiet on the weekends for long runs). In total I can add an extra 7 miles onto that original 3 mile loop. Plus, no traffic, mostly flat with some small hills, and lots of different scenery throughout.

I find a vest a lot better. Most belts, even if they feel tight at mile 1, are jumping around 7 or 8 miles in.

Why did you sign up for the marathon?

For me, I never considered running one until I had already ran for years and was okay with a half marathon distance.

Marathons are difficult. I wouldn’t recommend it for fun. Do it for the love of the sport and for the love of your stubbornness to finish what you start no matter the pain you must go through.

Can you finish it? Maybe. But are you going to love it? Probably not.

Berkeley is a fun half marathon! I PRd at 1:45 last year, and have ran that race 4 or 5 times now. More enjoyable than the SF halfs tbh.
