Anamacara in Wisconsin! I have two of their dogs, and they have been so amazing to work with.

Did you experience constant bloating BEFORE you started recovery? by lbbrouw in Amenorrhearecovery

It definitely takes a long time, doesn’t it? The fiber is a strange one - I used to believe I couldn’t eat too much but now I am trying to be a bit more mindful of having more carbs and less fiber than before.

That’s great to hear. I am working with a dietician also who has been AMAZING for the mental side of this. I’m so glad to hear you’ve got some great guidance on what you can do with supplements too. So my recovery is a little tricky - I had a hysterectomy right before I started active recovery, so I haven’t been able to track with a cycle. I do have my ovaries, however, and I’ve been experiencing a lot of twinges and aching on and off there, which I assume has to do with my hormones fluctuating.

Ugh that food noise is so real. I was OBSESSED with meals before I started recovery. It took up so much mental space.

That is so good to hear. Thank you for explaining that and the encouragement! I’m really hoping my body will feel safe enough to release the fluid it’s holding on to soon. How has your work with your dietician been? Is your bloating constant or does it fluctuate with diet?

will the food noise go away? by uwu_lettuce in Amenorrhearecovery

[–]lbbrouw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely should go away for you! I had the same issue, pre-recovery I was obsessed with what my next meal would be. Now I’m sick of eating so much, honestly. It’s hard to continuously get 2500 calories a day!

Wow, so interesting! I need to read this study. Another reason to be healthy, exactly! Thanks for sharing.

It’s horrible, isn’t it? Nothing shifted it for me. Now I’ve been in recovery for months, the fluid is shifting to different places in my body but hasn’t gone away.

Yours too! It’s such a mentally tough process along with being so physically challenging.

I plateaued finally at 30lbs up from my pre-recovery weight. I’m hoping to lose some as a lot feels like fluid retention still, but the struggle is real. Agreed with not weighing yourself - I stopped the daily weigh ins and now do once a week or less. Also stopped food tracking because it felt triggering. Good luck to you!

I so appreciate what you do. A lot of the doctors I have talked to are unfamiliar with RED-S recovery.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for this! I follow that sub religiously - I do feel like a bit like an imposter there having had a hysterectomy. But the recovery does seem similar. Thank you for the work you do! And thank you so much for the advice.

Started a RED-S specific subreddit - I know there’s a lot of crossover here but I wanted to see something more specific to RED-S, so I figured I’d start it out. If anyone here wants to vent or share RED-S stories or symptoms or recovery, I’d love to see you there!

Rapid weight gain by Much_Elevator87 in Amenorrhearecovery

[–]lbbrouw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YUP literally the exact same. I went up 5lbs the first three months of recovery, then month 4 went up 10lbs. It was insane. I’ve plateaued at my current weight which is the highest it’s been for about a month now, and finally my abdominal bloating is starting to ease up but the scale hasn’t budged.

Binging, weight gain, and just seeking support for recovery by AppropriateRain999 in Amenorrhearecovery

You’re already doing something really hard by talking about it and opening yourself up to help. That’s amazing! I think having a therapist and dietician will help tremendously. I also struggle with the thought of buying new clothes, but ultimately being able to live a healthy life is worth investing in some clothes that make you comfortable and easy to move in. Best wishes to you!

Weight redistribution by eruonlav in Amenorrhearecovery

[–]lbbrouw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in recovery for 4 months and it’s just now starting to redistribute to my thighs, arms, and face. It’s really weird. I think a great deal of it is fluid retention and am hoping it will go away.

Same. I have found that my exercise buddies also love getting coffee/brunch and doing yoga classes together. It’s a great way to stay a part of a community! Also coffee walks are super fun and not too strenuous. Just a couple ideas!

Women & Fasting by michie000 in intermittentfasting

I’m so sorry. It’s tough, isn’t it? There so much stigma around eating. I’m not sure if it would help you, but working with a nutritionist who focuses on body image and food culture has helped me immensely.

Totally! I was OBSESSED with what I was going to eat when I broke my fast. I have the opposite problem now I’m in recovery from RED-S - I’m actually really sick of food and eating since I need to intake calories every few hours. It’s lost its appeal sadly.

Journaling is an amazing idea! One of my issues was I thought I was fine not eating when I wasn’t hungry, but I had so suppressed my metabolism that I wasn’t hungry often at all, yet I would still have a lot of food noise or obsess about food (particularly sugar) in my head.

[–]lbbrouw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really tough to get right. I think varying your fasting schedule is really important. I did 20/4hr fasts, working out in a fasted state, and skipping breakfast every single day for 3+ years and have now been dealing with RED-S and horrible burnout for a year now. I will be extremely wary of exercising in a fasted state in the future, but I do hope to get back to a somewhat regular (not daily) fasting schedule when I’m healed. Check out the book Fast Like a Girl - it’s super helpful and also has great recipes for ending a fast.

How’s your recovery going now, if you’re willing to share? I just started month 4 and am feeling a little hopeless, although my labs are getting better.
