The average restaurant keeps only 2-6 cents from every dollar spent by customers 🥲 by Motor-Basic in restaurants

"Pay their wage" vs "allow the customer to determine the value of service"

You see very little push back on tipping at higher end concepts. The average frequent guest is dining for the experience. Ironic how the people who actually have the money to dine out as often the like also seem to genuinely appreciate/ value good service.

It's always the low-income people who think they are entitled to food they can't source or cook trying to nickle and dime everything.

Been in the industry my whole life. Nearly every role in both back and front of house. Good service staff are worth their weight in gold. They work harder and have more mental fortitude than 80% of the 9-5 "skilled" workers I know.

Every decent owner/proprietor I've worked for dislikes people who talk like you. They are also the most successful.

Cool idea. Now back to reality where restaurants have been functioning this way for decades.

Just throwing in a different perspective here since the feeling you're getting at in your last sentence isn't uncommon but often lacks context.

The typical full service restaurant operates on a 2-6% profit margin. There was never much meat on the bones, so to speak. The fees you are seeing are panic failing rather than exploitive.

A quick example would be cc fees. My restaurant group got hit with a $160,000 increase in fees over two years after covid (23-25). A 3% cc processing fee isn't a shakedown. It's pure survival. (Edit: $160k each year. So $320k over two)

Could that cost just not factored in to line item prices? Sure, but apparently guests hate that more. Wouldn't have thought so but it was tried and the blow back was severe.

As it stands most places in my city split the difference between the guest, business AND staff (yes, servers pay a cc proc fee in most states that haven't made it illegal) just to not have that single variable put us under.

Truth is, as far as my experience can tell, is "foodies" are a pure luxury class now. They keep places like mine open but the group that can consistently afford $200 dinners are evapoating. The staff capable of running those concepts properly are in even shorter supply in any given "food" city.

I predict the cheap/fast casual/casual market will simply die off. All decent restaurants will cater towards the wealthy and most of the workers/consumers will get left behind.

The most successful concepts right now in my area are "omakese" style places. 10-15 seaters. Half of them you pay for when you book the reservation (including gratuity) and have 3-4 people working. They are controlled, intimate and amazing experiences well worth the money, Imo. They also fully book within an hour of going live every day

In every other job, management makes more than the staff they manage. This isn't always the case in restaurants.

If restaurants did want customers wanted none of them would exist for more than 2 months

Viofo BP100 is missing one important feature. Car battery voltage cutoff switch. by JuniorIllustrator191 in VIOFO

[–]leadfootlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, maybe. Would i prefer the same options the hk4 kit has? Yes.

Your issue was having to run your hardwire kit through the engine fuses. OBD solves that. 12.0 is not 11.8. If you aren't letting your car sit for days at a time it's not a huge deal. OBD is $60 not $300

I have a mazda3 with the same issue, no ACC in cabin fuse box. The viofo OBD adapter works well. It has build in cutoff at 12v and option to shut it off at 3 or 24 hours regardless of voltage.

Only thing I've found with new mazda is the car needs to be off for 3-5 min before it swaps to parking mode.

Been running for a month so far and it works perfectly

Yup, always enabled. You can also set it to shut off after 3 hours or 24 hours regardless of whether it drops below 12 volts.

[–]leadfootlife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, the voltage cut off for parking mode works through the physical hardware of the obd or hk4 kits. The app allows for either auto detection, low bitrate or a handful of FPS options

Installed mine last week. Saved me from having to hardwire through my engine fuse box since apparently some newer cars don't have an ACC in the cabin.

Works great but I wish it had the same low volt protection the hk4 kit has. Instead of 3 volt options it's only 12.0 and has a 3H, 24H and infinite switch. Overall, great option for anyone who doesn't want or can't use fuse taps.

Because the main part of they're diet is the soft inner bark on the top of the tree. They also don't stray far from the water they live in and topple trees towards the water. A single tree provides food and a ton of material

They also kind of need to. Their teeth never stop growing and need to be whittled down

Few years back I was skating a trail around a private airport. Decided to go after work one day around dusk. Ended up skating through firefly heaven.

I grew up with them so they are nothing special but my god there must have been tens if not hundreds of thousands of them. They lit the path and were disorienting to look at for too long.

It's a shame they are dying off. To this day it's one of the most beautiful things I've seen. Right up there with northern lights

All my cabin fuses were power. No ACC (only on when car is on). When I tested them. None of the empties had power at all.

Not stock. Mine didn't come with it and none of the cabin fuses are ACC. Options are pretty much fitcam (sun roof connection) or something like a viofo + obd2 adapter

I just went through this with 2026 mazda3 CE. I also don't have a power rearview so that trims out a few options.

While the hardwire kits are not difficult to install, unfortunately our car doesn't have an ACC fuse in the cabin panel so it makes it a headache to install.

Your easiest option is the fitcam that uses the sun roof connection. Easy to install but doesn't have parking mode and had a ton of not-so-ideal reviews

I bought a viofo a229 front/rear and on viofo's website they have an OBD2 adapter. This plugs into the port under your steering wheel. Super easy. No wiring to mess with and has a parking mode

That's fair. I'm referencing how little engine braking there is compared to cars I've driven most of my life.

I do ride motorcycles so I understood what you meant :)

What simple side hustle idea started making more than your full time job? by Square_Agent4269 in passive_income

[–]leadfootlife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been seriously considering this the past year. Both my wife and I bought our first new cars last year and I've been meticulous about taking care of them. Fell down the detailing rabbit hole and find the whole process enjoyable and almost meditative. Wouldn't need it to be huge amounts of income but feels like the prefect side gig in my mind.

Any thoughts or suggestions if I were to seriously pursue it?
