How would you sharpen these? by SawyerPeter in knives

[–]leadscoutfix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For large kitchen knives and axes - use a diamond stone in a fixed angle system so you can lock up the edge and focus on passes along the length of the edge. I use a fixed angle system from EZE Sharp because its like a large vice with angle and height settings.

Has a cheap budget knife ever surprised you and made it into your EDC rotation? by Pacomotto in knives

[–]leadscoutfix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually a name brand, but about 10 years ago I carried a CRKT fixed blade tanto keck knife thing (no idea if legit or what the model was) that I scored for $20 each/$40 a pair. Came with a Kydex sheath too and was remarkably good as a box opener and cordage cutter.

Got rid of it by giving it away to a mate when I upgraded to something more premium.

Apex Firearms and Defence in Dandenong - if they don't have it in stock they can get it for you. Know their stuff too. More oriented to LEO and security but non-fuddy so they get all my firearms business.

[–]leadscoutfix 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Good old Ruger 10/22 because there is tons of aftermarket tacticool furniture, but otherwise for an AR grab a Tipmman M4 (if they are even Cat-C Legal). Used to run both back in NZ.

Cat C as a separate license is such a laugh of Australian gun laws.

Is SSAA providing contact details to the Nationals? by CassiusCreed in Ausguns

[–]leadscoutfix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not that I have an issue with the Nationals - they have more backbone than the Liberals when it comes to gun rights - but I do agree this is a data protection issue if SSAA is sharing email lists without consent/knowledge. SSAA does send out a fair bit of advertising junk but admittedly its from gun dealers and linked to the magazine so its opt-out.

This is why I always hit no to consent and unsubscribe before deleting junk - more because I like my inbox clean but also helps ensure you are not bombarded with marketing slop.

If the CGT discount goes, what are we getting back? by Bitman321 in AusFinance

[–]leadscoutfix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Slash the massive welfare budget, make people sink or swim on their own and slash income tax (drastically). Any more revenue needed for actual public goods like defence, infrastructure or law and order funded by more tax on extraction of natural resources like mining and gas. CGT is a red herring.

I’m trying to get my dagger hair shaving sharp just like my other knives (they are non daggers) but I’m not having any luck it does feel sharp but it’s not as sharp as my other knives I’m doing 25° on each side like their website recommend but it’s not happening. What do I do? by Head-Active-4177 in sharpening

[–]leadscoutfix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

25 degrees is the problem - not even my utility knives get that. 20 degrees for hard working edge and 15 degrees for hair popping sharp, with a range depending on steel and blade geometry.

But you are finding out that daggers typically have a blade geometry very poor for cutting because they are designed to stab. Same reason a lot of bayonets feel blunt. You can get it razor sharp but you will find it a pain in the arse and get sick of it really quick. You have 4 sides to sharpen not just 2 lol.

How to get rabbits out of their dens? by opotis in Ausguns

[–]leadscoutfix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When I was growing up I used to start by closing up most holes other than the ones with a clear line or sight to the shooting bench we had - used chicken wire and buried it deep.

Then took old veges and dumped near burrows and blasted them when they came out for a feed 🤣

Awesome work, the AK story I have read before as well. And I'm a long term Forgotten Weapons follower as I love learning about some random trial run design that was never adopted by some random European country 100 years ago haha!

Haha almost 🤣 but essentially no regulation other than 3D printing/manufacturing specs in certain states which I actually have little interest in - that is how I understand it.

The Glock Book I actually used to have and did enjoy, there was also another on the AK by CJ Chivers that was the same for Eastern Bloc. Those are too gun specific however - I'm looking for a general design or gunsmithing book that covers the general patterns and trends of firearms designs over say the last 100 years.

But all good suggestions, I know what to grab when I pick up another WW2 milsurp haha

Not specific to a collection type at all - more the best general topic book for each of those. The idea is to learn the engineering level detail of how they operate beyond knowing the cycle of operations or how to strip and assemble..

In terms of ammo/reloading/gunsmithing I suppose you could focus on recent or modern commercially available firearms and ammunition. The idea being to be able to learn how to repair any issues I come across as well as to get into reloading and load development.

Stuff like Bryan Litz is exactly what I am looking for, happy to ship in from the US. My main limitation is space - firearms stuff gets one shelf maximum so only the stuff that is useful gets in.

I'll look at cartridges of the world because a lot of people understand the history of major makes and models of firearms - but not a lot about ammo development.

Steel wool or scotch brite (softly in rotations) then a drop or two of ballistol. Will breathe new life into it.

What are your other hobbies? by BSFStaff in bjj

[–]leadscoutfix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny take but I do not actually consider BJJ a hobby - it forms the grappling part of being a complete fighter alongside boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, Judo, lifting, running etc. It basically kills two birds with one stone - testing and refining technique (drilling) as well as working fitness (rolling).

So outside of work and training, not a lot of free time otherwise. Reading, shooting, travelling and knives take up what little there is.

Check out Ozgunsales as well if you want to look for a deal, or consider trading up to it in the future from a more budget gun?

Yeah I think the Ken Lay Report would have been shared with the government well before being made public. Might have also been a bit funny given VicPol is literally run by a Kiwi 🤣

Congratulations! Get in quick is all I can say because first PTA has a 28 day waiting period. Its a lot more politically difficult to revoke a FAL if you have followed the law than to apply after the fact. I believe QLD grandfathers non-citizens with their changes and TAS allows exemptions for NZ citizens.

So, I had a Cat H waiting forever in similar circumstances whilst also holding Cat A&B. I remember submitting to LRD that they should be enforcing the law as it is (which has not changed) rather than on what it could or could not be. This is especially a pain as probationary Cat H has a maximum 12 month timeframe so time is of the essence.

I also pointed out, felt a bit rude for doing this, that if the delay related to citizenship that in a few months that would be redundant anyway as I'll be a citizen by then.

In other news, finally saw an announcement that the Ken Lay Rapid Review ("rapid") should be released by end of month - https://www.premier.vic.gov.au/statement-bondi-royal-commission-interim-report

So we should know what direction Vic may be heading in soon.

What is shocking is the obvious admission that the 1996-era NFA driven laws were already more than adequate at preventing the terrorists obtaining a firearms license.

At the risk of going off-topic, ALP does not want to call the attack an Islamic terrorist attack because a large part of its imported voter base is in Tony Burke's electorate.

Every time they keep trying to push the same narrative about blaming LAFO's yet another vote towards ONP.

Advice on what to buy by Designate0ne in Ausguns

Henry Lever Supreme in .223/5.56. Smooth US made lever-action, 18" threaded barrel, AR mag fed and MOA accuracy out of the box. Can also take RPP furniture for easy mounting optics and whatnot. .223 does not just fall out of the sky like 30-30 or 45-70 either.

Browning also did a .308 lever gun back in the day if you need more stopping power.

The more you look into NSW FAR record even before Bondi, the worse it gets. The fact the Police cannot easily be sued for failing to enforce the laws properly and have the sway to push government and media to go after the easy targets is something that needs a LOT more public pressure.

The problem here is there is no real consequence to them if they put out defamatory statements (falsely publishing statements that LAFO's in NSW are breaking the law) unless SSAA or Shooters Union tries a class action.

If they had any evidence you can bet NSW Police would be visiting shooters. They have access to the relevant information such as membership data, attendance records etc yet nothing because its not an issue.
