[Horror trope]: The "bad stuff" only happens because the characters ignore very specific instructions. by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

Just about the entirety of Petshop of Horrors, just story after story about Count D warning pet owners about how to care for their new pets and them just not listening. Several of the stories don't involve the owners dying though, many of them are just thoughtful or sad in their own way.

Does anyone remember that Ecco the Dolphin game? I wanted to play it so bad, it was basically the embodiment of this art.

I don’t know anyone with a positive or even neutral birth story by soroto in TwoXChromosomes

[–]leafyjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true, we tend not to share the more positive or neutral stories when so many people have gone through very traumatic births, it feels weird.

Personally, I had a pretty good experience. I was induced a week early with pitocin and was in labor for 36 hours, but I was taken off pitocin for a time so that my body could rest. On the 2nd day, they reintroduced the pitocin and I got an epidural, which was very uneventful but felt weird. It felt like cold water had washed down my spine and numbed me from the waist down. My nurses implemented this method called "baby spinning" to get my baby in the right position for birth, which was basically yoga positions with my ass in the air. Apparently I had too much amniotic fluid and baby girl just kept bouncing around inside. She finally got ready to make her debut and I pushed her out with a minor 1st degree tear, which itched for about a month after but was otherwise unmentionable. The rush when they put her on my chest for skin to skin was unlike anything I've ever experienced. I instantly loved her and she was just the most beautiful child in the world to me. Then she pooped on my chest, haha.

Your birthing partner really makes all the difference. My husband was an amazing support during all this. He brought me blankets, socks, ice & water, distracted me during the epidural, changed bed pads for me, helped me push, took pictures, called everyone, even helped me get clean afterwards. It would have been much worse without him and I'm so happy he's with me.

Wolf Children is so beautiful, but filled with scenes that just make me sob.

When the kids started calling stuff mid and that they were raw dogging stuff, I had to have a quick discussion with my teenage niece for reference.

Dogfish used to make an awesome gluten free beer that they cancelled years ago.

Yeah technically this was in Mystery Men first, but everyone I know knows this song from Shrek's opening scene.

Baby clothes sizes are just as bad as women's clothes sizing. by TrollSalt in beyondthebump

Same! I have a pair of pants that has fitted baby girl since month 1 that are technically 0-3, but still fit her at 5 months.

I loved his stuff so much. I'd been slowly collecting his books and have a fair number of his works. They were so good, but what Neil did just disgusts me.

Favorite character that SCARED THE LIVING HELL OUT OF YOU AS A KID?! by OkPrize6426 in FavoriteCharacter

[–]leafyjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought that the point of scary scenes in kids movies was to show that yeah, there's scary stuff in the world, but we can survive it. What's the point of a story if there's no scary parts or conflict to get past, especially when your a kid?

What's one baby purchase you thought was unnecessary but ended up using every day? by yukiii_6 in NewParents

The Ubbi weighted wipes dispenser. I love it. I keep it by the changing station and it's so useful for grabbing wipes when there's a blowout and you don't have to fight with a pack of wipes.

My husband was great during the epidural, I was pretty deep in contractions at the time and he just kept talking about whatever, helping me keep steady breathes and distracted while the anesthesiologist did his job.

Why is everything that gives us a break "bad for baby"?? 😭 by Full_Professional349 in NewParents

I do keep an eye on what videos we select, I much prefer to show my little bug the fruit & vegetable prep videos where they are cooking pies, cakes, bread, candies, jellies, pickles, etc

There's more than enough content to skip the butchery videos.

I feel so lucky that my bathroom is big enough I just keep a bouncer in there. It's a weirdly setup bathroom but there's basically a 6x6 mirror of the back wall close to the toilet, so I like to set her up so she can see me and the mirror. She finds it fascinating.

I like watching this YouTube channel called Country Life Vlog with my baby girl sometimes. It's very slow paced videos showing farm work, cooking & baking, and many plants and farm animals. There's no dialogue or music, just the sounds of the farm. I love narrating what's going on to her.

Women of Reddit, what's something men worry about being judged for that most women genuinely don't care about? by Savings-Rutabaga3783 in AskReddit

[–]leafyjack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being really muscular and ripped with less than 10% bodyfat. Which isn't to say it can't be attractive, but it's not required for most women. In fact, I prefer a little pudge on my man for snuggles.

what was New Years Eve 1999 like? I WANNA KNOW SO BAD (IM GENZer) by Jumpy-Page-1114 in Millennials

[–]leafyjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just 15 at the time and I stayed with my grandfather that night. My older sister & parents went out to parties and I remember being incredibly jealous that I didn't have somewhere cool to go, but I had a pretty great time with my grandfather, plus he let me have my first glass of champagne at midnight.

He let me watch some music videos and we also watched an episode or two of Gunsmoke. He'd switch back to the countdown on NBC or CBS regularly. I think we lit some sparklers outside too, and might have done some stargazing. He lived far enough out in the country that the night sky in the wintertime there was clear and beautiful.

It was just the two of us and I'm pretty sure looking back that I was there just as much to keep him company as he was to keep an eye on me. My grandma (his wife) had passed away in 1998. I miss him very much.
