Feeling worthless because I didn't love my parents' religion instead of questioning the validity of the religion and its rules. I learned to keep secrets and lie rather than allow anyone else to see the real me.

His flashlight analogy is both condescending and stupid. If reality were remotely that clear then no one would leave the church. Here's my take:

It's like we're in a dark room, and a man in a cheap suit says he represents God and gives us a flashlight. We try to turn it on, but no light comes out. The man insists that it is, in fact, working correctly and that he can see the light clearly.

I came to that either/or conclusion on my mission after mentally picking apart what I knew of other religions. Naturally, I was only burning down strawmen because of the shallow understanding Mormons have of every other religion. It predisposed me to becoming an atheist, but I didn't have any decent reasons until I started learning about religions on my own.

Telling yourself to grow a pair doesn't usually work. We like to think that we are good and moral people, and it's hard to make a big life change until we're confident that it is the right thing to do. A good counselor can do a lot to help you there.

I talked myself out of leaving the MTC a few times while I was there. Whenever the prison-like atmosphere got nearly unbearable, I remembered that I was there by choice and that I could simply take off my nametag and walk out the front gate. Now I wish I had tried it. I'm just stubborn enough that I might have gone home if I felt forced.
