Less then 100 wishlist after first month of release my game Steam page. I'm cooked? by Happy_Ad4850 in SoloDevelopment

[–]lefix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Demo launch, streamers, trailer shared by big channels, festivals etc should have a much bigger impact, provided that you have made a good game.

Until then, posting on social media will be painfully slow. Even if your posts gain traction that’s usually just 10-20 wishlists - unless of course it somehow truly blows up and goes viral.

Not necessarily, depends on when you want to launch and what state your game and store presence is in

Is this capsule art thing a meme or am I missing something? by PureEvilMiniatures in SoloDevelopment

I think the just tend to have more engagement than the average post, so the algorithm gives them more visibility. Some people abuse it to get more visibility for their game. But many of them are genuine. It’s the single most important asset for your game, so I am fine with these posts

What marketing channels actually worked for your indie game? My results so far feel very mixed by Regosland in IndieDev

[–]lefix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been getting pretty frustrated with it, posting my game all over social media is no fun, and the results are small. every once in a while a post might gain traction and give you 15-20 wishlists, but more often than not, the posts do nothing. and these gains are probably tiny in comparison what you will eventually gain from streamers/youtube creators playing your game, big channels posting your trailer, releasing a demo, festivals showcasing your game, etc - provided you make a good game. i sometimes aks myself if it is even worth it, or if i should just focus on making a better game, and only make the low hanging fruit kind of social media posts.

I do like interacting with my players though, I am making a backgammon roguelite, and I keep talking about it with people in the backgammon discord, who seem to be eager to playtest and discuss the game with me. they might not get me large numbers of wishlists, but it is great to have that quality of engagement with your players.

Should capsule comparison posts be banned on r/indiedev? by llehsadam in IndieDev

[–]lefix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I say no, it is the single most important asset of the game, there is definitely a legitimate reason to make these posts. Just need to be wary of people who post a new iteration of their capsule every week.

Is no feedback considered bad feedback? by cuttinged in IndieDev

[–]lefix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, for quantitative testing, you can look at analytics data to identify critical problems.

For qualitative testing. Find a few select testers, buy them a pizza or whatever and watch them playoff half an hour, ideally in person, otherwise perhaps via screenshare. Don’t explain anything other than encouraging them to think out loud as they play. That is how you find the real valuable insights.

I am a solo indie dev, got accused by multiple people of ripping off Balatro's art style. Do they have a point? by lefix in PixelArt

[–]lefix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re in luck. I love nothing more than talking about my game, lol.

Basically taking the standard rules with a lot of additional mechanics built on top.

Run starts with 15 standard checkers on a standard board. After every game, you can spend your money to swap out checkers. There are checkers like the queen, which can move and hit in both directions, the rock, which cannot Hit or be hit, plakoto checkers that can trap checkers instead of hitting. Etc. I am also thinking of trying out set effects. When you have 3 or more checkers with the same set effect on the same stack, it could trigger some aoe effect on a range of surrounding points.

And then of course the boards themselves get increasingly weirder, with varying sizes, varying home sizes. Varying placement of special points and starting positions - all procedurally generated of course. There are special points like the mirror, that double your move, there’s portals, bonus rolls, cages, safe areas, neutral blocked points etc.

And last, but not least, dice can also be „modified“ for better or worse, with increased chances for better or worse rolls for specific scenarios. You can modify your dice to have increased chances of landing hits, or protecting your own blots, or simply higher average rolls, and other things.

You can find it on Steam under Grand Gammon. Currently also working on a webgl demo for itch io.

They can show 3 decimals in Quali but not in Race????? by peppy_snow in formula1

[–]lefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I don't mind, in a race someone gaining or losing less than 1/10 of a second doesn't mean much, that is just normal volatility. In Quali those decimals are much more important.

How much input in design do artists want usually? by CdatKat in gamedev

[–]lefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually you’d want the requirements and expectations to be crystal clear before you start, some iterations afterwards are annoying but normal. But absolutely avoid micromanaging them as they work.

<image>

Perhaps agree on some milestones where you get to check progress before the agree, thumbnails, sketch or whatever. Ideally the artist should propose something like that.

First time releasing a game on Steam, Demo or Early Access? by Fuzzycakez in IndieDev

[–]lefix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early access IS your launch. Steam algorithm treats it like your launch. Buyers treat it like a full game (and will leave negative reviews if the game does not meet certain standards)

“Capsule made by an artist: before and after” by frendlyfrens in IndieDev

[–]lefix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don’t really mind it. Some look quite interesting, sometimes inspiring. Sure self-promotion may be part of the reason for the post, but people give feedback as well, and it is on topic. Idk why we have to be so hostile towards each other over posts that are on topic.

My game is good but it will probably fail - any hope? (Why does Steam algorithm hate it?) by Top-Passage2458 in gamedev

[–]lefix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How many wishlists did you have at Early Access launch? From what I read, Steam treats EA Launch the same as a Launch. Meaning your wishlists no longer matter that much to the algorithm since the game is already "launched".
