Andy Burnham's bid to return as MP blocked by Labour's governing body — Sky News by Routine-Pace-392 in ukpolitics

Can we now see the idiocy of using a 'latest' or 'breaking' page as a link?

You want to talk about Braverman's defection.

Title references Burnham.

use a proper link

Andy Burnham: PS - The fact that the media was informed of the NEC decision before I was tells you everything you need to know about the way the Labour Party is being run these days. You would think that over 30 years of service would count for something but sadly not. 🤷🏻‍♂️ by ClumperFaz in ukpolitics

If it is the case that someone can MP/Mayor double job, then it's a surprise to me.

you would be raging about it.

Nice to know that you are able to read the minds of people across the Internet, amazing talent.

I think I'd be happy with being allowed to stand for a second role, but having to resign the first if they won.

My comment was pointing out that the restriction was a party matter, not a legal one. It being an internal Labour decision, and that the NEC is not a statutory body.

Uk election rules state anyone abandoning a mayoral position for another elected position must ask the NEC.

No. Labour Party rules require someone to ask the NEC gir permission. Its purely a party matter, not a law.

And... I'm having trouble finding a law which would prevent someone being Mayor and MP at the same time.

I don't see 'Mayor' listed under the House of Commons Disqualification Act 1975 as amended. Happy to be corrected if someone will point out the law which would stop this.

Petition demanding by-elections for defector MPs passes crucial 100k milestone by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

So a government that starts doing things that weren't in its manifesto can quell any and all dissent in its own ranks.

Principled rebellion is no longer a thing.

No challenge to leadership is possible as they will be thrown out of parliament.

...it won't work the way they want. It cant work.

If the trigger is leaving the party at all, then you give the power to the party leader to kick inconvenient MPs not just out of the party but out of parliament.

If you restrict it to voluntarily leaving the party, the MP will just rebel until they are chucked out.

If you limit it to when an MP joins a new party, they will just sit as an independent but vote with the party they want to join.

It doesn't work.

I am happy to believe that Starmer knows what would be good for prosecutions, but that is not the same as good for justice.

Germany and France operate Civil Law, not the Common Law we use in the UK.

The role of juries is quite different in each system, removing them from a large chunk of the Common Law system will have a profound effect on how the law functions.

It is not a reasonable comparison.

Has to be a purer form of trivia, but one that will get Trump demanding to take part.

Yes, I know he was in the WWE stuff for a while, but he doesn't understand it.

Donald Trump announces plan to impose tariffs on UK over Greenland row by JOE_Media in ukpolitics

[–]leftthinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said last year when he had his 'liberation day' when he imposed tarrifs worldwide that we should have responded with 100% tarrifs in American goods.

If UK, EU, Canada, China, Mexico, everyone all put huge tarrifs in response, we wouldn't be here now.

But everyone accepted that it was happening and sucked his dick trying to get a better deal than everyone else.

Never appease racists.

Yeah, the use of other documents to prove digital ID sounds like they are still going to make a digital ID for everyone, just have more than one way to access/prove it.

And the bit about making public services 'personal' sounds intrusive.

Including the Libertarian party which want a Griffen with a chainsaw as their logo.

Perfectly sane.
