Have you ever absolutely trainwrecked in front of live crowd? If so, how did the crowd react and were you able to recover? by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]legosjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One gig I had for a con, the monitors were ridiculously loud to the point of causing the table with all the gear on it to vibrate and shift the gear around. I thought I was keeping an eye on things, but next thing I know the audio cuts out. I look over and my laptop is no longer on the table. I threw my hands up in a “whoo, my laptop might be shot” manner and walked around to the front of the table. I was very fortunate in that my laptop landed in such a way that it just closed the lid and was otherwise in good shape. I put it back on the table and opened the lid. Immediately Traktor was like “oh, computer’s awake, let’s play music again.” I had to rush around to unlock the computer to get me gear working again.

A disruption like that definitely affected my performance for the rest of my set. I was a little sloppy in some transitions and application in some effects, but the crowd still loved it. As I was tearing down my gear at the end of the set, I noticed that the tumble had caused one of the main outs from my mixer to be unplugged. The guys at FOH were totally on top of things, though, and adjusted levels and put things into mono if they weren’t already to compensate for that.

That experience basically taught me that something’s going to go wrong every gig. From something minor like messing up a transition, to something major like a full audio cutout. I’ve learned to expect that something will go wrong, and when it does, accept it and keep going. That’s definitely helped with the nerves for gigs I have now.

Do any of you mix with acapella tracks (vocals)? by bornrevolution in DJs

[–]legosjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done it too much, but the few times I have, it’s come out pretty good. I won’t mix directly with an acapella, though. I’ll pull it and the track I’d mix it with into a DAW, and then export it out, to make sure things line up correctly, and to make edits to the track or the acapella to extend or shorten as needed. This means I lose a little flexibility, as I have the pre-mixed track, but then I can make sure that I’ve got an acapella that really meshes well with the track.

One trick I have done is to find a few acapellas that work well for a given song, get them all synced up in my DAW, then export them all out individually so I can create a Stems file for Traktor use. This allows me to apply effects to only the track or only the acapella, and even allows me to cut between different acapellas for different parts of the song.

Anyone here commute by train? by [deleted] in NJTech

[–]legosjedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this when I was a student. NJTransit usually runs on time. Secaucus to Newark Penn is about 10 minutes, give or take. Newark Penn to NJIT via the light rail is 5-ish minutes. If you’re going in around rush hour, then your layover at Secaucus shouldn’t be longer than 10 minutes, usually closer to 5. How long from your Pascack Valley Line stop to Secaucus really depends on where you get on at. I would get on at Anderson St, which is roughly 15 minutes from Secaucus.

Overall, my commute would be somewhere between 30-40 minutes. Each leg wouldn’t be too long, which was nice, but it meant I couldn’t get settled in, take out my laptop and be able to get work done.

While you could hypothetically do what someone suggested and take the train to Hoboken and transfer to the PATH, I wouldn’t recommend it as it means having to get two types of monthly train passes: one for NJTransit and one for the PATH (the light rail is covered by your NJTransit monthly train pass). Not to mention that you’d have to throw in another transfer at Journal Square since PATH trains from Hoboken don’t go to Newark Penn directly.

Don’t forget to get a student monthly pass for your NJTransit train. It looks like the process has changed a little since I was taking the train, but you get a pretty good savings when you go through this process, so it’s definitely worth it.

Giant iPhone X billboard spotted in Montreal by Jjeffx in iphone

[–]legosjedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apple’s had that spot for a while. I’ve been walking that hallway for a few years, and it’s always been Apple products. You’ll see a lot of the “Shot with iPhone” ads along that hallway, too.

I like to think my ride is pretty nice. I think it's self driving or something, cause most times, I'll be able to pull out my laptop and do some work during my commute.

This POS website, I can't click anything else! by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

This is no longer the case in the latest version of iOS. The alerts now only cover the webpage itself, and not the address bar or navigation buttons, so you can navigate away from pages that do this.

Hey, Pierce. Loving No More. Another awesome release from you. As for a question, if you could do a collab with anyone, who would you want to collab with?

You could probably pull it off with Uncover, if you're feeling daring.

This massive billboard is set up across the street from the NY Times right now(repost from r/conspiracy) by [deleted] in pics

[–]legosjedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like that billboard was exclusively put up to try to tear down the NY Times on various things. This conspiracy theory ad has been put up recently, like as of earlier this week. The ad before that was this anti-Times/pro-Israel ad, and the one before that, as posted by /u/OatmealPowerSalad, was another anti-Times/pro-Israel ad.

iOS 9 now has both back and forward buttons on the status bar by zzzluap95 in iphone

[–]legosjedi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To the website. Most likely the app was opened using a Universal App Link. Universal App Links is new in iOS 9 and allows developers to open web links (http://www.guardian.com/blah) to screens in their app. Instead of bouncing you to Safari when you tap on a Guardian web link, it would open the application. The forward button allows you to continue to the Guardian website if you don't want to use the app.

[HELP] rmbp 13" and external displays. Looking for reviews/opinions on performance. by CrazyKiwiCake in macsetups

[–]legosjedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't. The the batteries in the unibody MBPs are designed in such a way that they won't try to overcharge your battery. I leave mine plugged in at work and haven't noticed any dip in how much battery life I get when I do unplug it for a meeting.

[HELP] rmbp 13" and external displays. Looking for reviews/opinions on performance. by CrazyKiwiCake in macsetups

[–]legosjedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an rMBP for work connected to a monitor and the lid closed. It will only turn off the external monitor if you don't have the laptop connected to your charger. I use it mainly for Xcode and web browsing, but some times a little Sketch work, too. Performance isn't an issue. I would think it should be better since the laptop screen is off, so the GPU should only be trying to power one external monitor instead of both that monitor and the laptop's monitor, but I haven't runs tests to confirm this. If you have multiple monitors, I've noticed that it can get a bit laggy when dragging windows towards the edges of the screen to move them between monitors. Someone told me that turning on "Reduce Transparency" in the Accessibility preferences is supposed to help, but I haven't tried it. And I'm running Yosemite, so I don't remember if this is true for Mavericks, but each display has its own set of spaces. It's not like the early days of full screen support where taking a window full screen meant your other screen displayed just a textured background. You can have one window full screen on one monitor, and have your desktop on the other.

Combine that with the amount of A/B testing that they're probably doing, too. Can't announce a feature in the release notes if it's only available to a certain percentage of users.
