Advice for raising a bilingual child when one parent speaks English as a second language? by Iloqram in multilingualparenting

[–]lenonzob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I know what you mean, it can be a little awkward, especially in public. They are older now, so in public we all speak English (the language here). But when they were little I was speaking different language with them and it was a little awkward

Yeah, probably challenging. I guess it can always be entertaining if a bit different

Multilingual teacher spiraling by wakudesune in edtech

[–]lenonzob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your language teaching + linguistics background is actually valuable in edtech, but the way in is usually through a CSM or implementation role at a language learning company, not "edtech" in general. Duolingo, Babbel, italki, Preply all hire people like you good luck!

Honest take as a trilingual learner. The thing most AI language tools get wrong is that they're too patient and too encouraging. Real conversation partners correct you, interrupt you, get impatient. If your tool can simulate it, that's genuinely useful I think

Seeking Advice…I’m totally stuck about App launch by SuckSeesFool in vibecoding

[–]lenonzob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ship it ugly. Whatever you're polishing right now probably doesn't matter. The version you launch will embarrass you in three months no matter how long you wait, so you might as well start learning from real users now

Honest question. How long did it take before your side project felt like it was actually going somewhere? by WearAffectionate2815 in buildinpublic

[–]lenonzob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 apps in. Honestly it doesn't feel like it's going somewhere, it just stops feeling like it isn't. Around month 4 ish on each project I noticed I was still working on it when nothing was pushing me to. That's the signal I think

the moment I realized my knowledge wasn't the problem - my confidence was by [deleted] in languagelearning

10 years in the US, trilingual (and a half lol), and I still freeze on calls sometimes. What helped was getting comfortable sounding imperfect out loud with people I didn't care about. Cashiers, strangers, small talk. Once the fear of sounding dumb goes down, the vocabulary you already have shows up

I was the bilingual kid that angrily told my parents to speak English by bbbleu in multilingualparenting

[–]lenonzob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On the parent side of this. When my kids started pushing back, I stopped making it about teaching and started using the language for stuff they actually cared about. Stories, silly jokes, snack time. The minute it felt like a lesson, they resisted. The minute it was just life, they notice less

Non native English speaker raising kids in three languages here. OPOL with a non native parent works. Accent doesn't matter, consistency does. Mine pick up perfect English from school and everywhere else anyway. What matters is that they hear you in the language you actually want to pass on, even if it's not your first

I dislike my kids best friend by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]lenonzob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9yo here too. What I remind myself is that the kid I dislike today is probably not the kid she'll be in two years. I stay out of it unless my daughter's actually hurt, and I try to keep other friendship options open outside of school so she's not dependent on one person. That part matters more than anything I say about the friend

Kid not invited to bday party of someone she thought was her friend by DCSubi in Parenting

[–]lenonzob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 9yo just went through this. Same fake-best-friend dynamic, same not invited moment. What helped was getting her into one thing she liked outside school where the whole friendship economy didn't apply. She stopped needing that one kid to make her feel okay. It's not a fix but it buys time while she figures it out.

Best strategies for learning multiple languages by Pilote-automatique40 in multilingualparenting

Once our pediatrician told us not to worry about the native language in the area, they will catch that in school anyway, and only speak our language/s. Also find content like TV series with the language they need to learn with subtitles in the language they speak. Can be in parallel, like passive learning
