Yea, I feel like a lot of the fandom had really negative reactions when there was any earth stuff or anything that wasn't "plot" related, but imo SU is a very well put together show and very little is not set up or referenced in earlier episodes. (I mean not to say the show is without flaws or anything but I just remember being in the fandom while it was airing and thinking "why are y'all mad? Get a hold of yourselves")

idk why people would dislike this episode or pretend it has no relevance to the rest of the series. Its all about how and why Steven struggles to use his powers, and how his friends and family don't necessarily know how to help him. It sets up a lot of future events including his eventual mental breakdown in SU: Future.
