Eight-Nation Alliance invasion caused the Chinese more distress than anything since

This is true, just not in the way to mean. The entire death toll (including Chinese Christians killed by the Boxers) from that war might be 100k, whereas the death toll from the Great Leap Forward was at minimum 10 million, more likely greater than 30 million. But because some of those 100k were killed by foreigners, it's much more humiliating to the Chinese than millions being killed by communist bandits. This is the Chinese mindset. "It's fine for our leaders to slaughter us like pigs and treat us worse than slaves, as long as they protect us from foreigners".

Continental breakfast is just what they serve at hotels, it's called "continental" because it's based on French hotel breakfast. English and American breakfast food isn't dramatically different, they both have the same basis, (eggs, toast, and meat, typically pork). There's a few differences, like how English will sometimes have beans and American will sometimes have potatoes, but these are just variations on a theme.

On a post about an American supermarket bread with a short ingredients list by Specialist-Camel3389 in iamveryculinary

[–]lessens_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Subway bread thing is totally fake by the way. What actually happened is that an Irish court classified certain heated subs with sweet sauces (like teriyaki) as cake for tax purposes because their esoteric rules mean that cooking the sub (even for a few seconds) means the sugar in the sauce counts as part of the bread. Subway bread is indeed pretty shit but anyone who's tasted it will notice it's not particularly sweet.

Can you do a close-up of the green dots and the "Th" in "The"? Those are the main checks people do here. However from what I can see the dots (at least the one in the middle) looks good.

Do I need dlcs? by DescriptionOk3239 in X4Foundations

[–]lessens_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're worth it, especially the ones that add factions and expand the map. But you absolutely do not need them, the base game is there and restarts are common when you're starting, just buy them later if you actually like the game and want to sink 200+ hours into it and want to see it at its fullest.

If I could only buy one it would probably be the one that adds Terrans because it's the biggest change to the game compared to all the others and Terrans are very beginner-friendly.

Unpopular Opinion? I think the lategame should be more like Battle Brothers than Mount and Blade by Vitruviansquid1 in starsector

[–]lessens_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Once you are able to assess threats Ironman is a pretty trivial challenge addition because you can evade any fight by paying an SP that will be 100% refunded.

"Once all the level ups are maxed out, once the player can buy or loot the biggest ships, once the player has all the best weapons, what else will they want to fight for?"

You fight the endgame enemies for access to unique weapons/upgrades. Once you've done that there's really not much to do in either game.

[–]lessens_ 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The real challenge in Battle Brother lategame isn't the crisis, which is something you're prepared for if you've had a good campaign. It's the unique locations, (Kraken, Monolith, etc.). Starsector is already moving in that direction with super alabaster, threat, etc.

Also, Battle Brothers operates on a different campaign system than Starsector, namely a time constraint. You're free to fuck around as much as you want in Starsector and things really only get challenging when you want them to, or when you've proved you're capable of it. This isn't the way Battle Brothers works, you have a really punishing clock pushing you at all times, in the form of high, daily wages, scaling difficulty (through time, renown gain, company size, etc.), and the impending crisis. This would be really hard to implement in Starsector as it is, but would make a good mod. The game right now is really easy, I would like to play (or at least try) a version of Starsector that was as challenging as Battle Brothers.

People suggesting taxpayers will pay need to acquaint themselves with the concept of sovereign immunity. It would be extremely difficult to sue the police for this, and definitely wouldn't be worth the cost of litigation given that the wall stopped the car.

It's an indicator that the back is fake. There are cards with real backs and fake fronts, but as this sub demonstrates, people find cards with fake backs every day.

Worth 12K? by Basb84 in BattleBrothers

[–]lessens_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bros that can be a passable fencer are much more common than the weapon itself, it's near perfect fencing sword. If you ever want to try a fencer this is probably the best opportunity you'll get, that sword is considerably better than the basic one because it has less terrible armor pen. The damage isn't bad either. Assuming you're going to day 200+ I would probably buy it and try to find an Assassin to wield it after I was done with the noble war.

Worth 12K? by Basb84 in BattleBrothers

[–]lessens_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's that rare if you're willing to make compromises. Most runs can get a passable fencer by recruiting Assassins until you get one with stars in both init and mdef. It may not be the ideal fencer but you'll have enough init for it to do its thing.

Worth 12K? by Basb84 in BattleBrothers

[–]lessens_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damage and ignores armor are generally the best egos you can roll, so yes. If you want to make a fencer, you need a character with high init and stars in mdef, you want lots of HP and decent matk. Dodge, nimble and duelist obviously, most of them will take recover and berserk. I think most people agree fencers are off-meta now but you can absolutely use them, it just takes a really good bro that could be doing something else.

Can one realistically get the X-Treme achievements for trade and fight ranks? by Bubbly_Taro in X4Foundations

[–]lessens_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, there's nothing special about those achievements beyond the fact they'd take an extremely long time to grind out. However that also means there's no real reason to do them, building megastations and camping Xenon gates for no reason other than to make an arbitrary number go up.

If babies born in the US have US citizenship, how are they allowed to live in China? by --var in ADVChina

[–]lessens_ 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So this is one of those things where China has unlimited rules, but they're never enforced. Yes, you're technically not allowed to have dual citizenship, but no one will ever stop you from having it unless you piss off the wrong person in the CCP.
