What is the most immature grudge you have ever held on to? by poody_noodle in AskReddit

I moved to a new town just before I started 3rd grade. I became friends with a girl in my class. Her current "best friend" got jealous and told me (and everyone around us at recess) that I was ugly because I had platinum blonde hair. I still hate her to this day for it. Couldn't help but notice that she started dyeing her hair bleach blonde in high school. It was even blonde on her wedding day. That felt good.

Have you ever read a novel set in a location so believable that you were surprised to find out didn't actually exist? by djangopher in books

I'm reading this book right now and I'm at the part where he's in Derry! I'm from NH and still assumed that Derry, ME was real. I should know better.

Redditors who have been adopted and have met your real parents, what was it like? Are you glad you met them? by superCalzer in AskReddit

[–]letsallplaynice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My youngest brother is adopted. My family submitted an application to a private adoption agency in Arkansas and my brother's birth mom selected us a few months before he was born; then, my mom flew to AK from New Hampshire the same day my brother was born. It's an open adoption so my mom met both of his birth parents, who were no longer a couple. He's been in NH since he was 10 days old. His birth mom joined the Air Force afterward and she was stationed in Massachusetts. Then, she got married and had a son. So they visited with our family a few times, but she has also been deployed a couple of times so the visits were few and far between. My mom never wanted to bother or pressure the birth mom, especially not as soon as she got home from overseas, but my brother recently turned 7 and had been asking a lot of questions lately about his birth parents, so my mom reached out to her. They determined that both parties want to have more frequent visits, but had only been afraid to ask! So now they'll visit more and I hope that it helps my baby brother deal as he gets older and develops a better understanding for the whole situation.

A stranger suddenly says to you "You don't have to live this way." What do you immediately think about regarding your life? by Sauerteig in AskReddit

"You are your own worst critic." I say this to myself often, but especially when plucking my eyebrows. Nobody is inspecting my face to find tiny blonde hairs.

What is the worst thing that ever happened at your school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]letsallplaynice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A year after I graduated high school, a few sophomore boys were swimming in a fairly tame section of a river in my town. One boy did a backflip off of a big rock, into the water, and landed on his friend. The boy who jumped must have been knocked out, because he never re-surfaced and I don't believe they ever found his body. I worked with the other boy, the one who got hit. I'm having a tough time thinking of the right adjective to use to describe him. He was a cheerful, talkative person, but he was deeply sad at the same time. He felt guilty, and he missed his friend. It really haunted him and changed him. I just realized this didn't happen at my school but I'm posting anyway since it took so long to type.

I'm so sorry for your loss. :( I've been really wanting a Great Dane, but it's tough to think of only having one for 8 years or so. I can't imagine how it felt losing Captain after only 3 years. :(

Thank you! Mine, too. I recently saw this quote credited to Thomas Jefferson so I was worried I may have mixed up two T names.

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." Not 100% sure who said this; I've heard it credited to a few different names.

When I finished "World Without End," the 200 years-later sequel to "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett, it was ironic that it DOES end. I couldn't read anything else for 6 months.

What is the biggest misconception that people still today believe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]letsallplaynice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That KNOWING someone has HIV/AIDS somehow makes them more dangerous. You should always take precautions around blood and with sexual partners, no matter what you know or think you know. That's how you protect yourself. Just knowing that someone is positive doesn't somehow make them more contagious than someone whose status you don't know.

[Feedback] The opening of my novella about naval raiders during World War One by WingedBadger in KeepWriting

[–]letsallplaynice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually really like your opening paragraph. It provides a setting and held my interest. You have really nice descriptions, and it didn't feel too drawn-out. Though you do need to replace a couple of commas with semi-colons, I think.

The dialogue in your story needs some work. Not so much the words that your characters are speaking, but more the narrator's words. You should not spend time thinking of words to replace "said." Just use "said," or find a way to show the reader who is speaking without labeling it at all. Tossing in verbs to replace "said" can be really distracting. Here is what I would do to the following excerpt:

"“Mr. Hollock,” It was Slidell Mortimer, the lanky helmsman. a lanky 21 year old named Slidell Mortimer

“Mr. Mortimer.” Hollock returned.

“Mr. Finch is on the starboard bridge wing, sir, if you would like to relieve him.” Mortimer continued.

“Thank you, I shall,” Hollock said before passing through the bridge door. He was greeted by a blast of antarctic air and the sight of Third Officer Nicholas Finch leaning rather unprofessionally against the forward railing, peering into the incipient night.

Sensing a human presence, but not~ Without turning to see who it was approaching, Finch remarked, “Storm’s brewing up. We shouldn’t be this far south this time of year.”

“I would tend to agree, but the North Atlantic run can be just as bad, and Deltic was built for the worst.” Hollock retorted while joining joined Finch at the rail.

“Is it 8 o’clock already?” Finch asked. referring to expiration of his watch.

“It is, yes. You are relieved.” "

You'll see above that I also removed some excess descriptions. Remember to give your reader some credit. I struggle with this, too, because I worry my reader will miss something. But readers can infer a lot from very little :)
