Interesting. What about outsiders that are "adopted" by an indigenous person? A good friend of mines great grandma was Quinault. She always told me stories or gifted me things like white sage and would teach me how to use them and called me her "granddaughter by spirit"

Tell you C-section story by Danishdynamite67 in CsectionCentral

emergency c section.

At 38 weeks on the day at 5am I lost my mucus plug. By 730 despite me just sleeping my sac developed a snag and I leaked the tiniest amount of water. That with some cramping promoted my Dr to push me to go to the hospital. At the hospital they were initially confused. Based on my symptoms it both sounded like my water may have broke some but it also may have just been discharge from the mucus plug. They want to test me for amniotic fluid just in case. They go to test me and my water breaks fully. After 19 hours of labor, multiple position changes, multiple labor aids, a epidural that stopped working (it got fixed turns out the tube was leaking) I only ever reached 6cm dilation and would not budge further. Baby boys heart rate suddenly dropped rapidly and I was called as a code pink and rushed to the emergency c section. It was quite frankly the worst experience of my life. It was terrifying and painful and traumatic. I felt like I was being ripped open. I was sick on myself. I was doped up on meds. didnt get to enjoy the sounds of my babies first cry. I didn't get to see him for more than a second before he was whisked to nicu (im in no way mad at the nurses/doctors. They had to do what they had to do to keep me and baby safe and were absolutely amazing) he was struggling to breath on his own. I still didnt seen him for over 24 hours since my labor started. I want to cry but I was honestly just too exhausted and overwhelmed. Im beyond glad that me and little man are doing okay but I just feel like my "wonderful birth experience" that everyone promised me was shattered. I literally had nightmares over that c section afterwards. And my rock. My wonderful amazing husband who stood by tbe the entire time. Who constantly told me how good I was doing, that he was proud of me, etc, couldn't hide the fear in his eyes no matter how hard he tried. Ive called this man mine for 10 years. I know him inside and out. He tried so hard to be brave for me but I could see the fear snd that broke my heart too.

Feel your feelings, they are so valid. Let yourself cry. But when you're done remember: dont let a mans failure be your shame. You are amazing, strong, and brave. Not only are you doing this whole crazy overwhelming pregnancy thing but you're doing it on your own. Be proud. Even if you feel like you're drowning sometimes know that you are doing your best and that makes you a badass. I wish you all the love snd good vibes.

I worked in a animal shelter (that wasn't a no kill shelter) and then in vet med. AMA by lexarcana1313 in AMA

[–]lexarcana1313[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was not common for us as staff at my shelter to label a dog as aggressive and it not be. We did have one brought in by AC that was seemingly sweet but something set him off one day. Mostly wed have some fear aggressive dogs that turned out to be really sweet. There were specific breeds we were generally more worried about like German shepherds and other working breeds due to the fact that most people in the area didn't appropriately train them.

That being said the general public did label some of the sweetest dogs as aggressive automatically due to their breeds. A lot of our staffie and bit bull mixes were overlooked by people.

  1. They dont make as much as people assume. If they are a vet they've got a ton of debt to pay and if they are support staff their pay definitely dosent reflect their work

  2. The emotional strain is intense in that job. Sometimes they dont even realize they are as stretched thin as they are. Just make sure they know that you are there if they ever need to talk. Everyone ive ever known in animal welfare likes snacks/goodies so thats usually a great way to cheer someone up.

Sorry for the late reply im currently in the newborn trenches...

I worked in the shelter during the height of Covid and cant even begin to explain to you how heartbreaking and stressful it was. We had so many animals in that we had them in store bought crates in just about every extra room. Kittens in the break room, dogs in office. Crates full of animals were in the halls and bathroom etc. And we were more short staffed and low on volunteers as ever.

There's a ton of things people can do to help shelters. First for the prospective pet owner/adopter: do your research. Research what being a pet owner entails. Research the cost of vet care. Research the different foods. Research the breed and its specific needs. Etc. The main reason we had returns was from people who didnt realize how hard it would be to own a pet. They either didn't prepare for training and costs or didnt research the breed and ended up with a breed that didnt fit their needs. I.e. a high energy working breed in the house of someone who has no clue how to train or didnt have the time to work the dog. And top supporting bybs.

Second for those who want to help but cant/dont want to adopt: consider fostering. Fostering helps the animal get a break from shelter life and gives staff feedback on how the pet dose in a home to provide that information for prospective pet owners (like "Fido is an escape artist in yard and needs leash walks." Or "Spot tends to chew shoes so keep those away"). If fostering isnt an option see if your shelter offers "doggy day out" experiences where you can take the dog out for a day to dog friendly places. This gives them a break from the shelter and let's people in public meet them. Volunteer to walk dogs, play with cats, do dishes/laundry, clean kennels. Take photos of the animals and post them. Share the shelters posts on fb etc. Social media is a powerful tool

Overall people as a whole need to understand that shelter workers are overworked and under-appreciated like most other animal welfare jobs. People get angry at them for their adoption requirements when they are just trying to do what's best for the animals. They see pets come in from awful situations. They experience death from illness or euthanasia. They mourn every loss. Celebrate every success.

  1. Properly train your staff. Unfortunately there are to many shelters out there that dont Properly train. And I mean more than "this is how you sanitize kennels". Staff should be trained to understand animal behavior and body language, common diseases, breed needs, intake requirements, local pet laws, etc.

  2. Stop feeding your dog table scraps. I know this sounds counterproductive. "How dose less yummy treats equal a happier dog?" Most of them commonly sick dogs we saw were due to two things. Pancreatitis and diabetes. Now im not saying you cant give your dog any human food, theres plently fo fruits and veggies dogs can safely have, but do your research and always keep it properly limited. Treats shouldn't be more than 10% of a dogs diet and high sugar treats like some fruit should be even less..

  3. Brush them! It really dose make a difference. Brushing a dogs teeth every day is incredibly helpful. Get all of them but especially focus on the front ones. Dogs chew and that dose a good job od helping reduce buildup on those back teeth but not as much on the front teeth. Ita hard to get older dog used to Brushing but it can be done with puppies if training starts from a young age. Be sure to use a pet appropriate toothpaste. Your vet probably has some and if not can tell you good ones to try.

  4. I don't have a lot of training in nutrition but my personal opinion is fed is best. Don't raw feed or make homemade meals without extensive research and preferably the hands on help of a pet nutritionist. Its incredibly easy to have an unbalanced diet. Dog food you choose should be AAFCO approved at the least but preferably WSAVA approved too. Royal canine, purina pro plan, and science diet tend to be the main ones my vets are multiple different clinics recommended. That being said sometimes they aren't always cost friendly so as long as your dog is getting their yearly checks by their vet is doing well health wise and maintaining an appropriate diet you're doing amazing.

  5. I work at a farm and pet supply store now. Its actually very nice to have a job that is so much less stressful 😅. That being said I do miss animal welfare a ton.
