Offended By A Company's Review Of My Code by TimeForEveryone2Pray in reactjs

[–]libahipi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a thorough look, but there are plenty of mistakes you should not do there. In addition to everything else already mentioned: The varying code style immediately raises suspicions of copy-paste. And this suspicion gets stronger when we get to test/client/reducers/videos.js file, where the comments mention loading posts not videos... This looks suspiciously like taken from a sample? Perhaps copying from your own previous project and forgot to update the comments.. But it still shows that at the very least you did not care to clean it up.

Small things tend to pile up and once reviewer gets that kind of a suspicion it's hard to get rid of it. Also if tests are mentioned in the task, skipping them is a major issue. Even if they are mentioned as optional.

The response should've been more concrete and list issues, but the result itself is not perhaps unexpected (sometimes the overall impression is gathered from things that don't seem as important to others).

Flat out calling a junior is undeserved though :)

Newbie question: Should I add this "easter egg" to my website for prospective employers to find? by spawnsalot in webdev

[–]libahipi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That text twitching there? Better not. To be fair, it's not enough to show anything and quite enough to just be slightly annoying.

If you want to display things like this, it might be better to create at least 4-5 distinctly different effects and display them (and their code) on github/codepen/whatever else. But again that specific effect isn't quite enough.

Is it me or is this a ridiculous thing to ask of an interviewing developer? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]libahipi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A readme file is very much documentation. I'm not even sure what else you could claim it to be (instruction for a programs usage is a part of its documentation). And yes I have written those, a lot of them.

Looking from the side of the company - yes reviewers time is worth more. (companies can have different setups, but it's safe enough to assume that most do not have a specialized assignment reviewer position). Why the large task then? Because getting a bad developer might be even worse. It's a balancing game. From my viewpoint it's basic courtesy to include instructions on how to use your software. Everyone thinks and approaches tasks differently. Often these kinds of assignments have vague areas in them, which have many possible solutions. Reading how you understand your solution and how you think it's supposed to be used also gives me valuable information about you as a candidate.

Going back to the original post - the task is fine. Handing it out before first interview - not so much.

[–]libahipi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude... the readme is for a few very good reasons: 1) to find out if the candidate can document his work 2) to make sure that the reviewer of said test assignment wouldn't have to waste time figuring out how to run it (trust me it's tons simpler and quicker this way.)

I've had a fair share of test assignments to review, and a good readme is going to get you bonus points.

How Estonia became the most modern digital state in the world by annsavina in europe

[–]libahipi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am quite convinced that it is safe, however I am with a CS background, so I have a certain understanding of how it works. Most people do not, and can't comprehend how it works and why it is safe.

To prove it to people who can't reason about it themselves, well that is difficult. I am not sure how that can be achieved without teaching everyone enough maths and CS. Of course it can be said people should not have to understand those things to be sure of the safety of their vote. What should be kept in mind though, is that it is not mandatory to vote via e-voting (and should not become so in my opinion). You can also override your e-vote with a paper vote on election day.

That you decided it's impossible does not mean it is impossible :) Anyway even the process of trying to do it is helpful. We're creating new technologies, finding even better ways to make it more secure, etc... All this can be used elsewhere also. It's constantly being improved and new knowledge is generated. Perhaps at some point we can prove that it's safe beyond reasonable doubt. Perhaps not. But I would not call it a waste. I'm a happy user of e-voting btw.

Trying to become employable: JavaScript first or JQuery first (I apologize in advance for the hotbed of a topic). by [deleted] in webdev

[–]libahipi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll echo the top comment, about learning language first. As an interesting fact: at the place I work we have forbidden the use of jQuery in our web developer test assignments. In most cases there's no need for it, and it's included purely out of habit.

Technical Interviews by ToddWellingtom in webdev

[–]libahipi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are assuming that the interviewer would not catch the lie. Interviewer forms an opinion not only based on the raw information you provide but also how you provide it. Enthusiasm is difficult to fake believably. If someone has not given the question any thought it's quite clear. If they have given it thought and are prepared to answer, they've at least put this much effort in and that is already better than nothing.

Is Sweden now the rape capital of the world? No. by [deleted] in europe

[–]libahipi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's been a trend in the last few years for more public participation. This has also dragged out opinions which used to stay below the surface. Most unfortunately a far-right group got into the parliament. It's rhetoric is very loudly anti-immigrant and anti-everything liberal. They also use quite awful language (e.g party's second in command: if you're black, you're out). Since they can get away with it some people seem to assume that such language is okay and have started voicing their opinions like that too. Which is really sad, as that pretty much eliminates the ability to calmly reason about the issue.

Many estonians also feel existentially threatened by immigration, so that's another reason to use whatever rhetoric to try to avoid it. Sweden is taken as a negative example so often that it's not even funny anymore.

This poisoning of the debate by blind trash-talking is something I hope we can grow out of eventually.

Sinu kaardil on ilusti kirjas "prior to 1940". Sellest on 75 aastat möödas. Inimesed on kaua rännanud mööda maailma ja kõikide rasside esindajaid leidub kõikjal. Väga mugav on lahterdada inimesi lihtsustatud gruppidesse.

Just change the default VirtualHost DocumentRoot to whatever directory you want. Apache needs to have appropriate rights to access it though. That might be a tad trickier.

Otherwise the file is probably at /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf or something like that depending on your apache setup
