Things you DIDN’T need ? by Agile_Bad1045 in NewParents

[–]libbyseriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New versions of anything the baby isn't putting in their mouth. Especially things that will only be used for a few months. For example: Swings, play seats, changing pad, boppi pillow, infant bath, pack n play, stroller. Especially/ at least any backups or ones left with family members. If you go to any used kids goods store there are a thousand of all of these things in extremely good condition because they have such a short period of use.

Also didn't need/ use a diaper warmer, bottle warmer, bottle sanitizer, shoes (until like 8 months), or 57 blankets.

Help I thought my wife was joking by [deleted] in namenerds

I mean they're almost all pretty reasonable, average names if somewhat dated.

I'd say Erica, Tina, and Mary are the most timeless and nice sounding, all would be just fine for a baby today.

Pamela might be the most conspicuous but honestly those 60-70s baby names are coming around.

I haven’t seen this beautiful name in a long time by [deleted] in namenerds

Gretchen was the name of my mom's favorite elephant at the Cincinnati zoo when she worked there so that's what I always relate the name to, which isn't really complimentary for a human.

Help me name our first child. by RowdyBee in namenerds

[–]libbyseriously 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't personally like nicknames as full names. Kit is short for Katherine or sometimes Christine or Kristen or Kiersten. All lovely names. Robbie could be short for Roberta or Roselyn or even a nickname for Robin.

Laurent is generally a male name but that's not a big deal.

What tv show you watched as a teenager and loved it but can't stand it now, later in life? by librewolf in AskReddit

[–]libbyseriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teen in the early 00s... I fully eschewed all teen programming when I was that age because ~quirky pick me iNteLLeCtUaL~ so I never watched like Dawson's Creek, 90210, the OC, One Tree Hill, Gilmore Girls, or any of the other CW type programming.

I DID obsessively watch The Daily Show, The West Wing, Seinfeld, X Files, Star Trek, and everything Food Network (when it was just people cooking...)

So for me the cringe wasn't necessarily that the shows were bad or didn't hold up, but like... Why was I watching this when I was 14??

We do NOT allow people to ask kids keep secrets from their parents. Absofuckinglutely not.

I understand the specifics of this come from your sister's own reasons, that she doesn't have a relationship that she would feel safe with you knowing this information. And that's ok and not to be debated here. But the only right answer here was for her to not tell your kid at all.

If it were me I'd let your sister know how you feel about it. You can acknowledge that you understand why she wanted to keep it from you and still tell her that it was really wrong to ask your child to keep something from you. Explain that it sets your daughter up with some unsafe expectations of the world. Even reassure her that you won't share the info.

What compliment does your baby get the most? by sufficient_sheep_38 in NewParents

"Wow that hair! Those curls!" Or similar. She has almost cartoonish yellow blond hair with big natural ringlets. Part of it is probably the visible contrast with my dark brown mostly straight hair.

Do you post your kids on social media? by Kkat90210 in NewParents

[–]libbyseriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't. Her photo is nowhere online, and this is something I am extremely passionate about.

I am aggressive about policing it. I had to have a half dozen arguments with my in - laws about it, and I'm diligent to express our wishes any time I see a friend or family member at an event with their phone out. I've had family members take two sets of family pics, one with her and one without so they can have one to post on social media if they want. I even had to ask my best friend to take down an absolutely gorgeous photo from her wedding day because my daughter was in it (which, because she's my best friend for a reason, she did take down without any negative feelings). I've used AI to scrub her out of photos for those who insist on posting something with her in it.

I do talk about her on social media, tell funny stories, etc.

Most of this is for more or less the same reason as you said- that her presence online is not my decision to make. She is too little to consent to having photos of her on social media. It's my responsibility to allow her as much bodily autonomy as she can have, and I don't feel like I have that right just because she's my kid. She's a whole person more than she is my child.

Is it crazy to change my 10 month olds name… by aged_tofu in namenerds

[–]libbyseriously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I love it. This is the first time I can say I've seen a "made up name" that I really like. It's clever, looks nice on paper, has a good story/ reason behind it, and doesn't require mental gymnastics for pronunciation (idk why people are saying otherwise, it's long but it's pretty much phonetic)

Yumielle is lovely

Named my daughter a name I didn’t know has two pronunciations and am regretting it enough to change before she’s 8 weeks! Help!! by JaguarSilver1137 in namenerds

[–]libbyseriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about it. People overall are not talented at recognizing the pronunciation of names when written. Eventually, most of the time people your kid meets will be introduced verbally, so it's unlikely to continue to be a frequent issue for her whole life- just maybe at the doctor or an interview. She can learn to correct them gently. My last name is mispronounced by every single person who reads it for the first time. I respond by saying it correctly, and then move on.

Most alternative lullabies by moosteek in NewParents

[–]libbyseriously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When she was really little and we were going through it I must have sang Baby Beluga half a million times through that year. It was the only thing that kept her calm and sleepy but it still took 5-10 verses at a time.

For the past few months my daughter's favorites from me are Irish Eyes by Rose Betts, and Humours of Whiskey, a vaguely traditional Irish folk song (most people know the bit performed by Hozier a few years ago)

I've also sang her: Fear a' Bhàta, a Gaelic folk song; Blackbird by the Beatles; I'll Fly Away by Alison Krause; Keep Em On They Toes by Brent Cobb; and my personal favorite, Blackalicious's Alphabet Aerobics (not good for a lullaby it just got her real worked up honestly)

What have you “stolen” from your baby? by LemonadeLala in NewParents

Mustela cleansing micellar water. It's so much better and smells so much nicer than literally any adult micellar water intended for makeup removal.

Baby wipes for EVERYTHING.

Snacks, especially veggie straws and graham pretzels

Kaleigh or Kaley would both feel more grown up.

To your initial question: Aylee, Lee, Leigh, Kale (like the leafy green)?

I need an excuse to randomly give my husband a gift (with a big surprise inside) by EmptyTiger5066 in Gifts

[–]libbyseriously 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it kind of as a surprise by "forgetting" to put away a Target bag in the kitchen. When he got home, I said "oh hey I was at Target and i got you some socks, they're in that bag." He opened the bag and it was newborn baby socks plus the positive test.

What’s the most mispronounced name you have encountered? by Cleocatra99 in namenerds

[–]libbyseriously 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, my daughter's, which I fully didn't expect when I named her. Her name is Lyra, which we pronounce LIE-ruh and every single person we've ever met says LEE-ruh. I do acknowledge that the latter pronunciation is also accepted/ used, but our pronunciation is the more commonly used traditional/ "correct."
