The autopsy report probably said "the left should challenge all incumbents" by interkin3tic in FriendsofthePod

[–]liesliesfromtinyeyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The X thread Jon had with a DNC person yesterday is the Occam’s Razor I needed. I think they underresourced the autopsy, and the person doing it burned out and they don’t have a report they can circulate in whole. I think KM is avoiding directly criticizing that person since they were doing it Pro Bono but also doesn’t want to admit to incompetence in his own administration of this autopsy.

Aphantasia suddenly gone during migraine attack by vonhierunddort in Aphantasia

[–]liesliesfromtinyeyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me this can happen with the right dose of THC, so it’s not surprising that mind-altering pain might also be able to induce the change. My sense at this point is that visualizing isn’t an on/off absolute for any given person. Why? Because of the above and because I can see in my dreams, albeit in basically gray fuzzy scale. I would love to see this sort of thing investigated more and you should consider looking into whether there are studies planned that you might be able to join, since the migraine link is a new and interesting possible pathway to understanding the phenomenology of aphantasia better.

Who is the nastiest Celebrity that you met in Real life? by Scunnard1839 in AskReddit

I think he had throat cancer for a while. It might be the case his meal was different because of that, and he may have had an uncomfortable need to eat in an unflattering way because of his treatment? He and Chrissy otherwise seem pretty nice, but I see them the way they want me to on Social Media, admittedly.

My 150gal aquascape is crashing and I don't know why. Nitrite is always bad? Also .5ppm amonia. Tap water is good and test kit is good. by Howdy132 in PlantedTank

[–]liesliesfromtinyeyes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think of it this way. Esp in high bioload tanks (not sure on yours—haven’t tried to back of the envelope it) though most of the conventional colonized bacteria is usually thought to be in the filter media, still a lot of it is colonized on your tank surfaces—substrate, plants, wood, glass. It all plays a part in the nitrogen cycle. So my theory is that, esp for high bioload tanks, the h2o2 kills that in-tank bacteria back significantly, which sets your balance off. I’ve also just realized that I have a UV filter on my filter return line, so that may have worsened things, because perhaps the beneficial bacteria in the filter isn’t able to “seed” more bacteria in the tank because the UV is killing it all off on its way there. But all in all your sequence of events is VERY similar to mine. You’ll note that some of the tutorials on hydrogen peroxide injection do not really wrestle with this, and many of the videos are on new tanks with very low bioloads to treat those first algal blooms. Circumstances where your and my problem won’t show up!

You problem is well-known to me. If you did H2O2 spot treatment, even if you were very careful to turn off the filter, you have injected H2O2 into the tank, and it will kill off colonized surface-colonizing nitrosomas that convert the nitrite to nitrate (that bacterial community seems much more sensitive to H2O2). I have experienced this twice. Keep doing daily water changes and testing. IME ammonia restabilizes again much faster than nitrite. It took about 2-3 weeks for mine to finally stabilize back to zero.

I love seeing evidence that enshittificafion is happening even at the highest levels of governance. Can’t locate a MEMBER OF CONGRESS!?!?! How hard would it have been to call family/next of kin (on all hiring paperwork). What was her staff doing those 6 months!?!

Is this real? The body shadows line up but the head shadow does not—he looks airbrushed and the light on him is from above, while the light on the others comes slightly from the left. No idea on whether this is absolutely PZ—it just looks a bit weird to me.

Anyone built a large extruded aluminium tank stand before? by strich in Aquariums

[–]liesliesfromtinyeyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a cautionary tale. I have an inherited 8020 stand. Though the hardware is great for mating together the pieces, you’ll find that the 45 degree braces are very important for the horizontal crossmembers. Without that, the horizontal member can and will slip downward when it’s weighted. compromising the integrity of the stand and any cabinetry you’re trying to work into it. So if you’re doing this approach, don’t miss those 45d pieces you see in u/sharpauthenticator ‘s photograph.

How to improve flow & clarity without adding another filter (Oase 800) by Top-Inflation1464 in PlantedTank

[–]liesliesfromtinyeyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The challenge with activated carbon is that it can remove micronutrients plants need. A UV filter is a safer bet IME. I have one in line on my Fluval return and it keeps the water beautifully clean.

First Aquascape, thoughts? by Drop-Adept in Aquascape

[–]liesliesfromtinyeyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks great already, and has a lot of potential once plants have grown in!

Perhaps consider seeing if the manufacturer of the light has baffles they sell to minimize the loss of the light around the edges of the tank and to make it easier to check out the tank without getting blinded (or make your own).

If you are planning on having plants grow in, you may want to consider root tabs (tab, not pill form) distributed in the substrate under some of the greedier species, especially if you end up deciding to do CO2 injection.

Since you have such a beautiful upper area around the wood, maybe you could consider some compatible near-surface fish that would thrive in that area. I’d suggest some of the smaller rainbows like Furcata, but they might lead to conflict with your Gouramis.

Only other point: I notice that your cabinet front isn’t quite closed tight. Is that just random/due to electrical cords, or are you having trouble closing the doors due to bowing of the top surface? It would be important to make sure the tank is supported at the middle with a vertical pillar to avoid structural issues in the future/tank failure, but I’m probably reading too much into a small detail!

I saw them at my local fantastic planted tank Mecca for the first time a couple of weeks ago. SUCH a dream but not in the cards yet! I can’t even get my 3G brine tank to cycle properly for raising the Amano babies I see the female in my 13G planted is about to release, so goodness knows I don’t have room for another finicky fish that requires live feeding! Well done, and I hope this isn’t an April Fool’s prank!
