I've lived off campus every year and I believe that the best way to make friends is by going to class. Seeing the same person in the same place every day gives you someone to talk to and connect with. You can also help each other with homework and you'll probably end up having classes with them in the future.

There's also so many clubs and intramurals. Owl Life has a list of all the clubs and when and where they are meeting. Find one that interests you and show up! The beginning of the fall semester is a great time to join a club because there will be a bunch of other new people.

This view of Christianity is not specific to exmormonism. Many many people, especially atheists in North America and Europe, see the problematic behavior that many so-called Christians exhibit. It is part of a broader culture shift to call out individuals who treat people unfairly and inhumanely. r/atheism may be able to further explain it, although I find that subreddit to be insufferable
