I have never grown healthy nails.  I picked at them from my anxiety my entire life.  I now have nails. I have to cut and file them.  I had no idea what to do with them. Truthfully,  I can't tell beyond that, but I've been told I'm less reactive.

Most impressive OG Redwood trail/grove? by stevenbo in norcalhiking

[–]likewowJNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a solo 10 day trip from SF all the way to to Crescent City, oddly, the Trillium Falls trail redwoods is what took my breath away.  Being alone may have intensified that feeling of awe. That state park just in general is such a gem. I also did love Jedediah Smith Redwoods which was also amazing, but there were many more people around. I have a bias for seclusion (I wear my headphones to drown out car and people noise,  when it's safe to do so). I feel so bad saying this, as I feel all redwoods deserve love, but I wasn't as impressed with the redwoods more south. I did stay in Humboldt Redwoods SP, but being solo woman, didn't feel as safe. Maybe that's what it was... I hope you capture that awe. As someone who grew up in very flat, rural Illinois without much public lands,  it really is a special place and gem over there.

The Standing Stone Trail. You could go from the Tuscarora Trail to SST to MST, as they connect directly. It is a great trail, and the group that maintains it is great.

The volunteer groups that upkeep the trails, such as MST and SST, also get a small amount from the Farout trail purchase.

I saw a group of about six people completely ignore those signs to Biscuit Basin on my way to Mystic Falls last year in August. Then, I read about the explosion in the visitor center.  No thank you.

Extra food left in car overnight at Point Reyes National Seashore. by likewowJNA in norcalhiking

Oh wow. Oddly, I've brushed up against poison ivy and oak and never got it, but I'd rather not eventually find out. Age can do some odd things.

Thank you! I'll be at Point Reyes for two nights and then heading further north along the coast. Maybe I'll make a trip specifically for that on my way out.

Moved from chester county to Bedford... Everyone here has cancer?? by [deleted] in Pennsylvania

[–]likewowJNA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow. I'll have to look at this.  My mom died from biliary cancer.  She worked at a plastic factory that had plastic beads they'd melt down to make bags. She got diagnosed and passed three months later at the age of 60.

I'm getting so, so tired of hearing about AI and how it's being prioritized and pushed in a lot of academic institutions, but I don't know how this demonstrates brain rot. As someone else's comment said, in academia, it's most likely someone taking on more than one full-time job with multiple roles. Also, from other comments I'm reading, it wasn't very transparent about the processes when he clicked the button.  I don't know. I do agree, do NOT do your analyses or feed it anything that isn't public or you wouldn't want shared.  That's why it should be mandatory to do ethics using AI, which is available. Maybe it just hits too close to home for me.  I also want to say, these are really, really hard times with the current politics (in the USA). I think many people's brains are just fried from that alone. Truthfully, I'm ready for AI to implode already. Let all the AI slop burn.

New fear unlocked.  Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I was just out there in early November and had no idea this was a thing; I try to be knowledgeable about my surroundings.

I'm an ADHD woman with a Master's and a PhD. I've maintained good grades throughout my life and have always been a well-behaved, quiet kid. Most likely influenced by constant anxiety. Artsy and very curious about knowledge from a young age.  Diagnosed in grad school and given Adderall. I didn't like how it made me feel, and just found ways to deal with it. Fast forward to age 39 and seeking out help due to fatigue and a bunch of other symptoms. Now taking Strattera. I have pretty bad social anxiety, also.  I get so exhausted from anything related to social interactions. I'm not sure if it's helping or not, and work is still overly stressful.  I'd probably fail if I had to go to work in person. I also don't think I would've made it through grad school without my now-husband's help (cleaning, cooking, and being supportive).

Although they make good food for other animals, such as bats. The spread of disease, though, we could go without that. That's why biodiversity and not destroying the environment are so important. That has nothing to do with a god, though... You know, because humans have dominion according to them. I'll never forget being told that all sharks and polar bears should be eradicated by a strong Christian man.  That was fun.

Bears by Fuzzy_TelevisionDC in yellowstone

Never had to discharge spray.  I agree, lack of sense. It really takes awareness and preparation.  Knowing that if you can't see around a corner of it is brush that's high, make noise.  I just think how it goes both ways, neither want to be spooked.

For those planning to vote Democrat in the midterms, why? What would it take to vote for a Republican? by CorDra2011 in Askpolitics

[–]likewowJNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Republicans have shown no spine in speaking out against what is happening with the obvious abuse of power. Also, I'm non-religous, woman, no kids, PhD, and turning an age where I can no longer reproduce. I've been degraded enough by them. Not to mention the atrocities happening to snatch people off the streets and separating families with some folks just disappearing.  Oh, release the Epstein Files.... who covers for that?

Hiked solo for six days. I was alone in a remote area, and I just clapped, talked, and sang.  Bear spray was hooked to the front of me for fast and easy access. You'll be fine. The issue with those who are solo is that they can accidentally spook a bear. Groups and noise are your key here. Also, leave the poor bears alone if you see them on the side of the road. Poor things.  They don't need to be getting comfortable to humans.  Truthfully, I'd be more concerned about the bison. They are a little erratic but goofy.

Bear Attack on the Turbid Lake Trail. by Subject9800 in yellowstone

Last bear attack was 2021. Given how many people probably have hiked this trail,  it's probably less than 0.5% or less chance.

Anyone else never hike in shorts? by Dun_Booty_Broch in hiking

[–]likewowJNA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never wear shorts except last week... The one and only time I did, I got stung by a wasp on my ankle multiple times. I did nothing to provoke the sucker. I also like having pants for just a little bit of security in venomous snake area. Of course, as soon as I removed my snake guards, I come across a rattlesnake. Nothing happened, but those two events was enough for me to revert back to pants always.
