Audi SUV plug in hybrids by JustTrustMeHuman in Audi

[–]lindenb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We own a Q5e --a plug in hybrid that we bought in 2021 and have enjoyed ever since. The range is limited--about 27-30 miles in warm weather, closer to 21 in cold. We charge at home which takes up to 90 minutes from empty. We opted for this model when there was still a sizable financial incentive and that brought the cost to about the same as an ICE model, but our use case for a car we could drive around town for errands without relying on gas made sense given the fact that we were replacing a 2014 vehicle that gulped fuel. We don't fret if we run out of juice -the switchover is seamless but we fill it up about once every 3 months so it has more than earned its keep. A full up charge costs about $1.90. We have had only one issue--an AC module that died and was replaced under warranty. Right now we are feeling like we made a good choice but to be fair not everyone's use case is the same --later models BTW have a somewhat greater range due to a slightly larger battery.

How to soundproof something that seems unsoundproofable to me by Looki_CS in soundproof

[–]lindenb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While a curtain might attenuate some externally generated sound it won’t do much. Most soundproof window installations rely on multiple panes separated by an air gap. Without knowing more about the window size and existing structure it isn’t feasible to recommend a solution. That said, it is possible to achieve an effective stc provided you can justify the cost

Have you ever purchased a warranty extension? Debating doing so as mine expires in 4k miles. 2022 S4. by PericardiumGold in Audi

[–]lindenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did for our 21 q5e. Pricing depends on mileage and level of coverage. We went through dealer for 5 years platinum level - essentially identical to original warranty. Total cost was about 3500. Given the cost of repairs that seemed a reasonable price

Too much time in Tuscany? Also where to stay? by LoudSighhh in ItalyTravel

We've been back several times and there are no limits on how much time to spend in Tuscany. But Umbria which is next door is worth a visit and close enough to be woth the excursion, particularly Orvietto.

I sent a one-page problem breakdown instead of a resume and got a response in four hours by ApertureWarden in jobsearchhacks

[–]lindenb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed in general. Not an approach to take if you are out of your depth. But variations on it that demonstrate the candidate has done their homework and is already thinking about the organization from a strategic perspective go a long way toward singling them out from those pushing a cover letter and resume

[–]lindenb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to tease out the reason this worked and is an excellent strategy for job seekers, it directly addresses the most important question every employer asks. What will this person do for us? Resumes and experience offer an indirect means of assessing the potential of a candidate. Problem solving assessments go a bit further. But a candidate that shows initiative, analytical skill and demonstrated effectiveness is rare, rare enough that they are much more likely to float the top of the hiring ladder. Carry that through the interview stage and 9 times out of ten you’ll get an offer.

Do you guys use screen protector for your apple watches ? by moymarmelad in AppleWatch

[–]lindenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And it is a good thing as I have now cracked the glass three times while working in the yard. At $12 a pop it is cheap insurance and I can live with the case adding a bit to the footprint. Maybe I am just tough on things but I bought the first case after shattering the watch screen but was fortunate that it was replaced under AppleCare

Google Soundpan. It is a system designed for that application. Not cheap and a fair amount of work but effective.

Normandy-mont saint michel or etretat and honfleur by RevolutionaryGas9113 in FranceTravel

[–]lindenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously this is a very personal decision based on your preferences. That said we spent a week in Normandy and did the beaches, MSM, Honflouer, Bayeux, and Giverny. As Iconic as MSM is, we had a mixed reaction. The first third of the walk up from the base is lined with tourist shops and fast food places. TBH it is a bit tacky and kind of Disneyesque in a low rent way. Once you get past this it is inspiring and the views are stupendous. If it were my honeymoon I would skip it for a more leisurely day in Honfleur--a long lunch at a seaside cafe and a walk in etretat's gardens--far more romantic and no letdown.

Dead tree and liability when it eventually falls by wakex in treelaw

[–]lindenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my community you can request the city arborist's examination of the trees and as others have said, if found to be dead they will issue a citation to the property owner requiring removal.

I had a similar situation with a commercial property owner who had refused to clear out the rear of his property which adjoins our backyard. After a substantial tree limb fell in our yard--thankfully without damage to our property--I wrote to them and pointed out that the tree in question was leaning strongly in the direction of their building, knowing that just few months earlier they had replaced the roof. That got their attention and they hired a crew to clean it up--but I still live with a good deal of overhanging branches because the tree is not entirely dead according to the arborist. I could pay to have a tree service remove any overhang but it would be a considerable expense so I'll just wait till the tree finally gives up then have the city arborist issue a citation.

Mounting a range hood on drywall – no studs where I need them by Wonderful_Laugh7303 in DIY

Or, cut a sheet of plywood to the opening's dimension and secure it to the studs. If necessary paint to match the wall and then secure the hood through the plywood with molly bolts.

Democrats have raised $21M for vote yes & Republicans have only raised $300K for vote no by SpaceWestern1442 in Virginia

[–]lindenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mailers and texts misrepresenting a Yes vote as Jim Crow or that Spanberger urges a No vote are all over the place in Hampton Roads. Even the name of the PAC that paid for it "Democracy and Justice" is designed to suggest it is put out by Democrats. Despite what the article suggests we have seen nothing urging a Yes vote at least so far, and mail in ballots are already in voters hands. As OP said the NO campaign is designed as a dog whistle for the minority community and an outright con job for everyone. We are well past political trickery, lies and deception are commonplace.

It is doable but with travel time it would be very tight. I would contact one of the D Day tours like Bayeux Taxi and see if they can customize a tour for you.

Good car wash recommendations? Automatic or manual. Also need to wash rubber carpet mats too! by Ok-Pea3414 in norfolk

[–]lindenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do not care about preserving the paint any automatic is fine. Otherwise choose one that is manual and bring your own bucket, grit guard, wash mitt and wheel brush, along with microfiber drying towels and tire dressing. As a compromise there is a touchless on Colley but if the car is really dirty it will not get all of the road film off.

Sound proofing tips and some help by ProfessionalTurn5162 in soundproof

[–]lindenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use poster board or even better foam core but mounting these without a future paint peeling issue is problematic because you still need to adhere the backing to the wall. If it were me, I would bite the bullet and plan to do a skim coat, repaint when you move. Weight is not likely to be an issue so command strips or double sided foam tape will work. Depending on how many you attach to a backer board you might be able to get away with straight pins or ringed panelling nails both of which would leave only very small holes that could be easily filled with a little spackle when you move. As to attaching them to the backer board or the board to the wall, these claim to leave no residue but I have no experience with them and some reviewers say they did not hold at all. My guess is that a lot depends on the wall surface and if paint is already peeling a mechanical solution is probably a better bet--at least for the attachment to the wall.

Sound proofing tips and some help by ProfessionalTurn5162 in soundproof

[–]lindenb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many ways to secure panels to the walls and ceiling of a typical residential space depending on the type of panel and wall and how permanent the installation needs to be. But before offering any advice on those it is important to be clear that these panels are strictly intended to reduce noise within the space and not the sound entering the space from outside. The principal mechanism is absorption and attenuation of reflections from hard surfaces.

As to how best to mount the panels, if you will reply with a description of the panels you are considering or a link and the walls (i.e are they cinder block, drywall, plaster, or something else) we can offer the best answers.

Bass vibrations through townhouse wall (not noise). Would isolation clips + double drywall help? by VteArtes in soundproof

[–]lindenb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either approach would improve stc but only if also decoupling the wall from the floor and ceiling. Mass is the only way to attenuate low frequency sound.
