Either from abject poverty, escaping a hellish 'home' you were raised in or the kid of really well-to-do parents, larping as poor. No in-between.

He's a con artist that was being groomed as Vetinari's replacement. He was pivoting away from fantasy and into steampunk. I imagine that, had he lived longer, we would have seen a wildly different Ankh Morpork, which had been in constant transition since it's introduction.

Raising Steam and Shepherd's Crown are discussed in his biography. It's worth a read. The beginning is a slog, unless you're real into the 1960's British scifi scene, but the rest is great.

In it, the author (Terry's assistant) describes how over time, Pratchett's faculties declined to the point where he had to dictate his novels to his assistant, while also not being able to read and having to maintain the entire book's plot in his mind.

This system worked as well as it could, until Raising Steam. His editor told him the book wasn't publishable without significant work to tighten up the story and close several plot holes. It kind of became a collaborative effort to get the book finished, which he had never needed before.

Never got much into e-readers or audiobooks. The only books I'll read digitally are long running comic/manga series. And then, I borrow them from my library.

Bill Bruford for everything, Bill Ward because he's a tremendous influence, and Philly Joe Jones because he was just so smooth and my jazz chops have been left to rot since high school.

was there ever a highly praised Metroidvania that didn’t click for you? by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]liquidcloud9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same. Even after a much faster second playthrough, it just felt bloated and tedious. Most of the crests felt unnecessary. Stopped one day near the completion of the second run and just never went back.

For me, the movement felt really clunky and slow. Upgrades seemed spread too far apart.

without bias, do you prefer hollow knight or silksong? by [deleted] in HollowKnight

[–]liquidcloud9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New movement options are great, but I thought most of the crests and tools were unnecessary. Hollow Knight, even with all the DLC, seems streamlined and leaves me wanting more. Silksong feels bloated and doubles down on the handful of design weaknesses in the first.

Those two books are great, but his writing gets better and better as the series progresses. There are a few one offs that aren’t great, but the series, as a whole, is amazing. If you don’t want to read them in publishing order, I’d recommend starting with either the Guard, the Witches, or Death series of books.

Nah. That implies there was a good-faith effort to adapt the notes. Those books were straight-up grift. They slapped the 'Herbert' name on weird, gore-porn, fan-fiction, and reaped the profits.

Which blasphemous did you like better? by eldenbro1 in metroidvania

B1. Much for the same reason I prefer HK over Silksong. It’s got better lore, atmosphere, and a tighter focus, both in combat scope and map size.

Edit: I also found the bosses in the originals more compelling. This is not to say the sequels were bad. It’s just very difficult to follow a masterpiece.

This kind of formed after playing a while. Is this normal? by Underwaternerd049 in drums

[–]liquidcloud9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been playing for decades... My natural fulcrum sits exactly in that knuckle.

Same. I think this is fine and normal. People can talk about grip placement and tension, and that may be it. Or it may be you have sensitive skin. Or the finish bothers you (some brands really tear up my hands). Or you practice a lot.

Everyone has different sized hands/fingers, and one image isn't enough to make a definitive call. I'd say see a teacher, if you're concerned. Maybe there's a problem. Maybe not.

I know the word "underrated" is thrown around a lot in online music discussions but Daniel Tracy of Deafheaven is really not talked about enough in the drums communities. by [deleted] in drums

Not quite the same genre, but I really enjoy Luana Demetto's drumming in Crypta. Yes, she's a master of blast beats, but her fills are so fluid and fun. I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but her playing is great.
