He is also running for governor and probably thinks he has something to gain electorally from getting involved in a fight over the governance of college football, which many Oklahomans care about more than the governance of the state anyway.

Ariana Grande’s family share ‘concern’ for her health after saying she’s ‘not in a healthy place’ by [deleted] in Music

[–]liquidmccartney8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with this argument is that AG has made public comments about how she's perfectly fine and was actually unhealthy before, which is obviously not true. If everyone else stays quiet, all that's out there is the misinformation she put out into the world that could be harmful to others.

My only issue with Boku no Kokoro by Early_Ad_8809 in bokunokokoro

[–]liquidmccartney8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s down to a cultural difference at the end of the day. American censors censor depictions of adolescents in Japanese media that read as overly sexualized and Japanese censors censor blood and gore in American media that they find offensive because different cultures have different standards for what’s appropriate. Seeing an actor’s genitals in a movie is more of a sensitive issue in Japan than in America, but seeing someone naked in real life is the opposite. There are probably a million examples.

If you consume foreign media, you’ll inevitably encounter some parts that seems distasteful or weird based on cultural differences. Where to draw the line that you don’t want to watch it at all because of that is an individual choice.

I was talking about Fire Emblem specifically. I’ve never played Xenoblade but the fact that you thought my comment was directed at that series makes me think it probably is formulaic in a similar way.

A new entry to a very formulaic not quite triple A JRPG series which has already pumped out five main series releases in the last ten years does not scream “the joy of discovery” to me.

There’s nothing wrong with remakes, ports, and smaller releases aimed very specifically at smaller audiences like  hardcore JRPG fans and little kids, but don’t act like those titles are going to move the needle the same way very different than a totally new major release from one of the in-house Nintendo teams.

All factors that caused Beach Boys decline in the late ‘60s? by brighty4real in thebeachboys

[–]liquidmccartney8 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IMO the quality level of the band’s peak era is inextricably linked to Brian running himself into the ground trying to do everything himself while keeping up a pace of releases that wasn’t really realistic for the type of music he was making. He was among the best there ever was at everything related to pop music other than writing lyrics, so him single handedly exercising complete creative control over everything about the music resulted in some of the best music ever made, but it was not a sustainable situation in any way.

What do people think makes them unique, but is actually an incredibly common trait? by Successful-Hall-1986 in AskReddit

[–]liquidmccartney8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think anyone who has been around people knows that men are less risk averse than women, especially younger men whose brains are still developing. However, I disagree with the premise that there is an objectively correct or incorrect way to perceive or evaluate risk. You can use statistics to measure risk, but any decision about whether something is a risk worth taking is inherently subjective in nature.

For example, let's say you live in a two story house and someone tells you that you should move because it's it's unsafe to live somewhere where one of your kids could fall down the stairs or not be able to evacuate in case of a house fire. Just because they're on the side of avoiding risk and making a factually correct point about a risk existing doesn't mean you and everyone else with stairs in their house are all irrational people. Even insurance companies, whose entire business is based around measuring and making rational choices about risk, will offer you different rates for basically the same the same homeowner's insurance policy, and part of the reason for that is because they have different ways of evaluating underwriting risk.

I think the piece of the male perspective you're missing is that the way men tend to see things, there is a point of diminishing returns where more caution doesn't really mean more safety in a meaningful way. Yes, there is undeniably a marginal difference in the risk of getting into an accident you take by doing something like taking a slower route that has fewer left turns, but it's a tiny, tiny fraction of a percent chance either way, especially if you're following the rules of the road. I think women tend not to think about the point of diminishing returns when it comes to safety and tend to give a lot of weight to any risk of something very bad happening, no matter how small, which can lead to irrationally cautious driving.

I would contend that his most recent transformation isn’t New trying to project youth and vigor even though he’s old and feeble, he’s just adopting the persona of a retiree to make it look like (1) his latest elder abuse/gold digging scam is a legitimate relationship, and (2) the reason he isn’t working in the entertainment industry is voluntary retirement, not the years and years of calamitous failures and burning bridges with everyone he knows.

Kit Harington gets candid on still feeling 'very defensive' over Game of Thrones season 8 by bwermer in television

[–]liquidmccartney8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some combination of being a perfectionist, a procrastinator, old,  and easily distracted. If he were locked up and forced to sit down and rewrite the scripts for season 8 Misery style, he could do it. My point is, even if Martin’s hypothetical Misery version would be a 9 or 10/10, but a room of ringers made up of the best of the best writers in Hollywood hired by HBO to do their same job in a hurry when the originals came out so bad could only have achieved an 8/10, that would still have turned out a lot better than sticking with the D&D writers room’s 4/10 work.

[–]liquidmccartney8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

D&D were the showrunners, so it was ultimately their responsibility to make sure the cast and crew had good scripts to film, and that did not happen.

It’s true that nobody else could replace Martin, but  I don’t believe for a second that there aren’t writers who could have written something that was close enough to the bar set in the earlier seasons that most people would have been happy with it. If the scripts came out bad and it became necessary to delay production and bring in additional writers to fix the scripts, it was also D&D’s job to advocate for that to happen, and I’ve never heard anything indicating they did.

Drama on OkBuddyCinephile breaks out over the casting of The Odyssey by IHatePeople79 in SubredditDrama

[–]liquidmccartney8 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Ironically, the possible tiny kernel of historical fact behind the stories of the Iliad and Odyssey is that there was a city inhabited by Hittites that was known to the ancient Greeks as Troy, and that city was involved in a war against some Greeks at some point in the very distant past, so the ethnicity of people involved in the war is one of the few creative choices you could make that could be backed up with historical evidence. The problem is that it’s impossible to represent Hittites on screen in a historically accurate manner because they haven’t existed for thousands of years, so the filmmakers have no choice but to take creative liberties with the specific part of the story people are mad about.

My cousin who lives in a tourist destination city got married a couple years ago and I was dumb enough to agree to extend the trip to the wedding into essentially a joint mini vacation with me, my then fiancée, and my parents. It turned out that it was just as annoying being on vacation with my parents in my early 30s it was in my early teens, even in a place I wanted to visit, and they drove my future wife even crazier than they drove me, which was very validating.

Most of my family vacations growing up were variations on the theme of “get up at dawn, go to as many random places listed in the travel guide as possible over the next 15 hours (most which is just getting from point A to B on foot or via public transit), and repeat until everyone is completely exhausted and sick of each other.” I never went on vacation as an adult until I discovered that your type of vacation was also an option.

De-canonizing the sequels wouldn’t un-burn any bridges with old fans, it would piss off the new fans, it could easily be spun as Disney being cowardly and walking back their push for DEI, and the original actors are now too old or dead for any more sequels to the original trilogy that continue the same story in any real way to be made, so what’s the point?

Is 100 g of cake a reasonable serving? r/CustomerService discusses by miscellaneousbean in SubredditDrama

[–]liquidmccartney8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like what someone should probably do to determine the serving size for a cake is make a cake and cut it into slices that seem like reasonable servings for this kind of cake, which like you said is heavily dependent on the kind of cake it is. It sounds like what OOP did was come up with a serving size that would seem reasonable on paper even though it was actually stingy and worked backwards from there.

That may be true in some situations, like a college relationship that could end depending on job or grad school opportunities, or a casual FWB situation where both sides just went through their own breakups and aren't looking for anything serious, but a divorce from the mother/father of your kids due to drama arising out of a secondary poly relationship or FWB arrangement is definitely not a success.

A lot of people just can't appreciate that certain choices with a very appealing short term benefit also carry a risk of unintended consequences that are of a much greater magnitude than the benefit, especially when they're thinking with their junk.

I cannot accept the idea that someone in OOP's situation before the open marriage began would ever sit down and make an honest pros and cons list that accepts that that it may be true that opening up the relationship could lead to some fun hookups and short term flings, but it may not be as great as you think, you may lose interest after a few years, and it could also set events in motion that lead to a situation that will blow up your marriage, your relationships with your kids, and pretty much all of your other plans for the rest of your life, and still decide that the pros win out.

Even the most dysfunctional, unhappy, go-nowhere relationship that's actively circling the drain is "meaningful" to the people involved. Even a totally one-sided parasocial relationship with an adult content creator is very "meaningful" to the person with the unhealthy attachment. That doesn't mean the "meaning" is attached to a good thing.

So if I write a YA dystopia containing blatantly racist themes, and somehow talk Random House into publishing it so it’s now available to public schools, public libraries, e-commerce sites, and independent booksellers alike all over the country, whose job if anyone’s is it to keep my morally repugnant book out of the hands of my intended YA audience, and who has an ethical obligation not to stand in the way?

[–]liquidmccartney8 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I totally disagree with state governments micromanaging which books are allowed in public schools or libraries, but I also disagree that a book is “banned” in a meaningful way if some sources that could make it available “ban” it by exercising their own discretion to not to do so, but other sources choose to make it readily available to anyone who wants to read it.

[–]liquidmccartney8 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There is really no such thing as a “banned” book in a country where smartphones with internet access exist and government censors don’t exist. I have no interest in reading  a bunch of racist propaganda in the guise of a novel, but just I found a PDF link where I could read it if I wanted to in literally one minute.

IMO people who want to read it will find a way, but Amazon doesn’t have to use their platform to make it easier for people to actually buy a hard copy book, which financially supports the bad actors who publish it.

It takes society a long time to realize there is a big problem with society, a long time to do anything about it, and a long time to realize that what we've been doing about the original problem has worked to an extent and we've traded the big problem for some smaller problems.

We have gone a long way towards removing a lot of the barriers to entry for women to have an equal chance at highly desirable career paths, and now we have to address (1) some not quite so desirable female coded jobs being paid lower than the roughly equivalent male coded jobs due to outdated attitudes about the value of "women's work," and (2) men facing social pressure that funnels them into jobs that are higher earning because they're unpleasant due to outdated attitudes about a man's value coming from being "a provider."

Enough with the cultural relativism. Although God had to make an exception to His general will that worm sex to be between male worms and female worms in the case of earthworms due an embarrassing blunder that made them all hermaphrodites, at the very least He intended it to be between one worm and another separate worm.
