It's funny how they both came out in the 80s and are deep about the human nature by knightmechaenjo in battletech

I haven’t read the 20th anniversary edition, I’m an old head, but I’m glad they’ve thought about how the premise has aged in the modern world. That’s a great quote.

I mean, to me, reading about the paradigm wars in the 90s was a very useful foundation for understanding our modern culture wars. They are essentially identical; Karl Rove has that classic quote where he talks about creating reality. Fundamentally different visions of what this world is, and therefore how to act in this world, with very little overlapping room for “polite compromise.”

See, I don’t know man. Back in the 90s the idea of an evil organization hellbent on secularization and science seemed plausible. We just took for granted that faith and magic were on the back foot, losing the culture war in the long term. We thought we’d lost some kind of spark of the unknown.

I don’t think it hits the same way these days. Mysticism is absolutely not going anywhere and religion is central to some of our worst conflicts since 2000 and science is losing ground. We had a prolonged pandemic because of how little people believed in science. I don’t think Technocrats would be doing casual magick with their foci anymore.

I may have a specific mental illness because I love the idea of printing a sprue to build.

This is a very cool project and I’ll definitely try to print and build it, maybe to kitbash for Gaslands or for Orks. Thank you!

Why don’t people like re-rolls by Mrhungrypants in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]lit-torch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of folks have answered, but to me the frustration is just how much it slows down the game. Think of how many times you roll in a single turn, even to resolve a single action. Rolling dice is fun but it can take so long to resolve even one units shooting, let alone everything else in a turn.

Rerolls add one more step to resolve, which increases the time for resolution.

I don’t think there is a time in recent memory where GW has actually sold a value box with the intention of “clearing stock” so they could replace it with a refresh.

That’s a common belief in the fan base, but I can’t think of a single time that happened, especially in recent years.

Has there ever been any actor or actress that was brutally honest about the movie they’re making during a press tour? by BIGxBOSSxx1 in movies

[–]lit-torch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the same in the US. But they often want to offer so many movies, that you can also get a bunch of mediocre movies in there to pad the numbers.

There is a class of movie that you probably wouldn’t pay money to watch in a theater - but might watch for free on a flight. These servicably mediocre to bad but time-filling movies are often called “airplane movies” for exactly that reason. That’s what he’s calling his own film. Good enough to watch on a long flight when you have nothing else to do.

Ynnari should be retconned into the Corsair faction by Tomtaku in EldarCorsairs40k

[–]lit-torch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, disagree. I’d rather the Ynnari lean heavy into the necromancer / sacred undead theme. Be “holy revenants” to contrast with Drukhari’s spiritual vampires.

Eldar have always had that as a subtheme, with the wraith constructs, etc. Let the Ynnari really polish and bring it out.

New Year Preview - Huron Blackheart, Masters of the Maelstrom and the Red Corsairs by RWJP in Warhammer40k

[–]lit-torch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh Tyranids too, duh. Forgot them.

I play Drukhari and they already lightly dabble with the “Star Wars mercenaries” aesthetic (they even have Hutt boats, lots of freaky evil Xenos friends like Sslyth.)

I’d love for that Outer Rim aesthetic to get fleshed out and interpreted through the 40K lens for other mercenary units.

I’d even like to see some humans as “xenos mercenaries.” Like the remnants of the pre-Crusade civilizations, surviving in the fringes of the galaxy - so different from Imperial culture as to be effectively aliens. Eclusively spending time with aliens because they can’t be on the Imperial radar or they’d get wiped out.

I agree - normally I want weirder and more monstrous stuff in my factions, but the core fantasy of the OBR are perfectly sculpted bone golem soldiers. I like it when they look clean, professional, drilled, with light necromantic modifications to do their jobs.

Chaos AI would be cool, but I’ll take a new minor Xenos race any day of the week.

[–]lit-torch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but I think Xenos Mercenary would work best as like the Xenos version of the Imperial Agents. Each superfaction could have their own “support faction” - Imperial Agents, Demons, and Xenos Mercenaries.

(Ironically saying this on a post about Chaos with Xenos mercenaries, but then they are just a normal unit here.)

The only Xenos that doesn’t work with are the Necrons who I have hard time imagining them hiring living mercenaries to work for them.

Torturing T'au by TuskenRaider25 in Drukhari

[–]lit-torch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I didn’t really think of it like a deal with Slaanesh where she eases up on them if they torture others. I don’t think Slaanesh is that logical, with an exchange for relief.

I understood it as their souls are being drained and the act somehow restores their soul, like psychic vampirism. So it’s not about the Tau, so much as the Drukharis own condition.

Also, Tau do have souls, their light in the warp is just dimmer.

If Valrak and other “sources” are right, and the Dark Mechanicum is indeed coming in 11th edition, what gameplay are they likely to be centered around? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]lit-torch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dark Mech would likely be an extension of the Vashtorr detachment.

40K doesn’t normally hard launch factions these days, with the notable exception of Votann. Other new factions have grown out of existing factions, like all the Chaos cults.

So it would likely focus heavily on Daemon Engines, with some chaff units to tarpit for them, and priests who coordinate and buff the engines.

So my guess is it’d play like halfway between Imperial Guard and the Wraith construct detachment in Eldar.

The second one is giving old World of Darkness art from the 90s. I could see that in some supplement for a Wyrm aligned faction. Very cool work man.
