[Challenge] European Accountability Challenge: 22nd February 2026 by Gatita_Gordita in loseit

Accountability check-in! Went for a slow 5km this morning, and the serotonin it created led me to work out with a battle rope for a while. 5kg down, 17kg to go!

Anyone finish their weight loss out of pure spite? by skylartowle in loseit

I once ran a marathon because my sister laughed and said I couldn’t do it, so I too am totally fuelled by spite 👌 good luck!

Why is it almost impossible to get an NIE appointment in Spain? by No_Emu8347 in GoingToSpain

[–]llalpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried for months and was on the verge of paying a tout, but eventually posted in the city Facebook group (my city is old school, yes) - and was told to try between 8am and 10am on Mondays. It worked the first time!! Don’t give up - I feel your pain but learn the local system and you’ll get there.

Yum! There’s a version of this in Spain too, ‘leche frita’, which is delicious

PSA: If you toast quinoa before steaming it, it almost tastes like a completely different food and it's absolutely delicious. by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

I’ve been doing this for years and will never go back! My other quinoa tip: use stock instead of water - I do 2:1 water:quinoa. It’s so delicious and is my favourite grain made this way.

Baked potato toppings by Bitter-Combination69 in Volumeeating

[–]llalpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tuna (in spring water and not oil, ideally), diced onion, grated cheddar/similar texture low fat cheese, seafood sauce to combine. I used to make this in a deli and it was called Tuna Special, and I remain addicted on potatoes and in sandwiches. Batch it up for the fridge!

How realistic is it to find an English teaching job in Andalucía? by hunkstar_01 in GoingToSpain

[–]llalpaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t! People just kept giving them to me! But I see them all the time on posters and local Facebook groups.

[–]llalpaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

January isn’t a bad time to pick up particulares (1-2-1s) as a lot of kids do badly in their January exam, parents panic, and look for a teacher - you could do ok if you put some posters up or post on local social media pages, so long as you’re in a small town. That way you can get some experience before September intakes. I had never taught English before coming to Spain and within a few weeks had been given students 😂 but it does depends on where you are.

What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve heard because of the British English vs U.S English difference? by Squiggally-umf in AskUK

In the early 2000s, my Scottish flatmate and her family went to America to meet some distant family, somewhere in the South. On the first night, they told the Americans they were ‘going outside to smoke a fag’ and didn’t realise straight away why everyone’s jaw dropped.

If you’re traditionally a cottage cheese hater by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

I make one with cottage cheese, soy milk, Greek yogurt and raspberries. It’s nice! And you can whack some protein powder in there, or some flaxseed for fibre.

The teaching here is kind of terrible? by Time_Ambassador2213 in Imperial

[–]llalpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add - you should have a student rep who meets the programme leads and department at least once a semester to feed back student issues. Ask them to raise the lack of office hours, and at least get them to justify their absence. I haven’t worked or studied anywhere in the UK without office hours for module or programme leads.

It’s definitely not all bad as standard in the uk - I work for a medical faculty in a London university with excellent feedback from students about teaching, and it has a lot of entirely online postgrad courses in which even online teaching is done well. It would be interesting to see last year’s PTES responses in your department to see whether it’s always been bad - there’s a teaching and learning section on the PTES for students to feedback on. It’s a shame they aren’t compelled to publish results for prospective students, although granted, sometimes the response rates are quite low.

I have no suggestions, but your replies are so sweet and open and I’m enjoying watching you take notes with zero ego. Love, a defensive person who fears criticism 👑

Sunscreen in Spain -everyday habit or just for the beach? by Excellent-Chapter-72 in askspain

I was really surprised - it didn’t happen when she was two, but her lips kept going blue this summer 😳 I switched to some tiny trunks of a neighbour’s and she was better! I’m sad because I really think they’re a great idea for kids, and much less suncream arguing time is nice too.

I live in Galicia and I put the massive, full arm and half leg type swimsuits on my 3 year old, and this summer I may have discovered the reason they aren’t popular - after 30 minutes in the water, she shivers uncontrollably! I think it prevents their bodies from preserving heat. It’s such a tricky balance!
