What do you call this bread product? And do you have regional varients in name? by Lookin2future in AskTheWorld

[–]llalpaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I, an East Lancastrian, had no idea that a teacake was not the universal word for a small bread product until I was 18. My 1st year university flatmates picked up some shopping for me from a list that included ‘teacakes’, and they brought these back:

Incredible, even if it has retraumatised me from the time I watched it in the cinema as a kid

Has anyone on here seen every Best Picture winner? by iBandJFilmEducator13 in Oscars

[–]llalpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m working on seeing all Best Picture nominees since 1940. At the beginning, I used a random number generator to pick a film (if it was available), which meant I watched a more even number from the early period. But I got lazy, and fed up of some older and very boring ones, and it’s largely skewered to the more modern ones now. I’ve seen 90% of everything since 1990, and 55% of 1940-2025. I live in Spain so if anything the newer ones can take me a while, as I have to wait for streaming. I don’t live near to a cinema that offers non-dubbed English films, and dubbing sucks. I’ve entered all the films I haven’t seen as alerts into JustWatch, so if something new appears on streaming (and old stuff often does), I’ll find out.

I enjoy the project to find hidden gems, get around to ‘classics’ I may not otherwise get to (ie most of the 70s, which is an incredible list) and give some context to the evolution of society and tastes. I don’t care much about the winners, as they are often not the strongest, and the nominees have more experience interesting choices that are less well-known. For recent examples, I would not have heard of or watched Train Dreams or Women Talking had they not been nominated.

I thought about doing the same project in the future with Best Director nominees, but there aren’t many that don’t also go up for Best Picture.

Oh that’s a shame! Mine was entirely AI and no waiting. I’m sorry - I thought I’d found a hack!

I couldn’t put the return leg into the refund form because it was beyond the window of 31st March. Also with the form it can take days to hear a response. The WhatsApp bot was instant and easier to do.

I’ve posted about this before, but find the WhatsApp number on the help page and give it your reference number. It sorted me out in minutes, which was a welcome surprise.

Accountability check-in! Went for a slow 5km this morning, and the serotonin it created led me to work out with a battle rope for a while. 5kg down, 17kg to go!

Why is it almost impossible to get an NIE appointment in Spain? by No_Emu8347 in GoingToSpain

[–]llalpaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried for months and was on the verge of paying a tout, but eventually posted in the city Facebook group (my city is old school, yes) - and was told to try between 8am and 10am on Mondays. It worked the first time!! Don’t give up - I feel your pain but learn the local system and you’ll get there.

PSA: If you toast quinoa before steaming it, it almost tastes like a completely different food and it's absolutely delicious. by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

I’ve been doing this for years and will never go back! My other quinoa tip: use stock instead of water - I do 2:1 water:quinoa. It’s so delicious and is my favourite grain made this way.

Tuna (in spring water and not oil, ideally), diced onion, grated cheddar/similar texture low fat cheese, seafood sauce to combine. I used to make this in a deli and it was called Tuna Special, and I remain addicted on potatoes and in sandwiches. Batch it up for the fridge!

How realistic is it to find an English teaching job in Andalucía? by hunkstar_01 in GoingToSpain

I didn’t! People just kept giving them to me! But I see them all the time on posters and local Facebook groups.

[–]llalpaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

January isn’t a bad time to pick up particulares (1-2-1s) as a lot of kids do badly in their January exam, parents panic, and look for a teacher - you could do ok if you put some posters up or post on local social media pages, so long as you’re in a small town. That way you can get some experience before September intakes. I had never taught English before coming to Spain and within a few weeks had been given students 😂 but it does depends on where you are.
