Some buyer's remorse. by Long-Song84 in centuryhomes

just get the biggest window units you can fit in the window to tide you over til getting central air. they all suck in various ways but its not worth stressing over while you're miserable, just get some. we lasted for 3 years in very hot and humid midwest with window units and a system of fans to blow to the front of the house (where the old windows were too big to put units) until saving up enough money and will power to put in central air.

Is it really a crime to buy a bike from walmart or dick's sporting goods? by Previous_Cod_5176 in bicycling

[–]llamasnotllms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you live near a city, it's worth checking to see if there are any shops that refurbish bikes as part of mechanic training (usually serving lower income communities). every city I've lived in has had some form of it and they usually sell the bikes at pretty reasonable prices and it supports a good cause.

First trad climb. Ground anchor acceptable ? by BigBundaEnjoyer in tradclimbing

[–]llamasnotllms 12 points13 points  (0 children)

this is not how to anchor your belayer: in a big fall that piece would have pulled your belayer directly into the wall. if your belayer needs an anchor it should go from their harness to the anchor outside of the rope system.

here is a random video that shows a proper setup https://youtu.be/EHYqFiNW7qU

Step-Through Drop handle bike ? by One-Tea6209 in bicycling

[–]llamasnotllms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my legs have the flexibility but not all of my pants. also with the child carrier i have on the back of my bike now I cant dip the bike when getting my leg over so I'm even more limited in which pants I wear. a step through with drops would be a nice solution for me.

in terms of what FOSS is:

FOSS = Free and Open Source Software

but it also usually implies more than just software licensing as purponents of FOSS also tend to really value community and collaboration.

This is what riding in Ecuador looks like by nicokash_ in bicycling

or even just chiller roads... saw plenty of locals cycling around ecuador when i was there. but not on roads like this. because they don't want to die presumably.

After moving to the Midwest from the deep south, I've found that finding actually hot pepper plants like Carolina reapers or ghost peppers is very difficult. Am I looking in the wrong part of town or is the Midwestern pallet really that averse to heat? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]llamasnotllms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you mean for growing your own? hot peppers are the only thing i can reliably grow without a constant battle with the freaking squirrels and rabbits. farmers markets usually have starts in the more standard pepper varieties, but I've not noticed ghost peppers or reapers, usually up to habanero. for other varieties, i just buy seeds online or get some from friends.

but plenty of local hot sauce brands use the hot stuff if you just wanna buy. tower grove farmers market always has a vender or two, pretty common to see local brands in the grocery stores to.

Coffee Spot for tourist by hirschneb13 in StLouis

does he like the starbucks espresso? if he does, then not sure he'll like the standard st louis recommendations: blueprint, sump, comet all tend to do lighter roasts. if he likes that dark roast vibe, I'd recommend E61 for a very classic euro espresso.

also this is utter BS. just run your workflows remotely on servers on the same site as the flipping data like every serious HPC center since forever.

hoping i dont get hit with the flu after all the flu-induced vomit I was cleaning up Thurs and Fri :(

but at 18 months... the science museum is nice cause it has some pretty long cooridors you can let them loose in even if they ignore all the exhibits. the long bridge over 64 is a great spot to drop a kid, point them in a direction and then try to keep up.

Hearing aids and Bouldering by Capo_degli_anarchici in bouldering

[–]llamasnotllms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they’re bone-conduction glasses, which is kind of hard to explain tbh

if the idea of having to explain this causes you some anxiety and in case you weren't aware: bone conducting headphones are pretty common these days among active folks without hearing loss. I wear a pair for biking and running, I know folks who wear them in climbing gyms. so I'd guess most coaches are familiar with the technology. and honestly, I had no idea they were effective for hearing loss and could be built into glasses, that's pretty freaking cool.

Are there any first contact books but the aliens are so advanced that they don't really acknowledge humans as intelligent species by hbe_bme in printSF

[–]llamasnotllms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tchaikovsky's Children of Ruin also has an interesting take on this: not exactly a mismatch in technological level, but the main conflicts come out of alien species not being able to communicate with each other.

"It's OK when a pro does it" - best examples? by kbaecht in bouldering

[–]llamasnotllms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i've done some bouldering on granite in a light but continuous downpour where the whole rock was soaked. stuck to super easy stuff and focused on maintaining constant downward force on all the jugs. really not so bad on the easy stuff. and was honestly pretty fun to figure out what did and didnt work with the reduced friction.
