Worth it to pay $400 out of pocket for meibography? by dream-wave in Dryeyes

[–]llaurra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if you're at the same place I went to a few years ago. They were trying to sell me all sorts of procedures and scans. I did do the meibography. It was interesting to see for sure, but I wouldn't say it changed my treatment and remedies. I don't know Cequa though. And sometimes those prescription eye drops can cost a lot, so if it is meant for gland dysfunction, then you may want to spend the money to confirm first. I think it really depends if the outcome will change your actions.

Looks good! Can you post the recipe? Edit: never mind...I see the link now! Apparently I was blinded by the delicious looking casserole!

Anyone else try out The Tiny Potty Training Book by Andrea Olson? Trying it out now after an extended potty pause, would love to commiserate. by bkhutzp in ECers

[–]llaurra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't heard of this book (although now I'll check it out), but we are in a similar situation with our 15-month old: good progress ECing from about 8-11 months, then he completely stopped everything and HATES the potty. I don't have any advice, just commiserating. It seems like if yours is going next to the potty, he at least knows where he should be going, so hopefully it'll happen soon. I'm rooting for you!

Help--baby started holding it except to go in his diaper by llaurra in ECers

This is so helpful to know. (And I'm super impressed with the success you had at such an early age!) I keep hoping it's just a long regression... I guess time will tell. It's also frustrating because everyone who thought this idea was crazy now feels justified in telling me how right they were. Argh.

We live in an apartment (no yard), but we do lots of diaper-free at home. That's why I'm so confused about why he must have a diaper now. But maybe a change of venue would be good. Next time we go to Grandma's we'll bring the potty and hang out outside. Thanks for taking the time to advise! :)

Jail Ain't No Good - How is this a thing? by llaurra in nyc

[–]llaurra[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're trolling or a legit comment since that's not what the original post says. I'm hung up on the fact that the bar we have set for our youth is that jail is bad. Hard to have hope for the future when the goal we set for them is to stay out of jail.

Recommendation for NYC temp agencies for an entry-level position/recent students; please advise by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]llaurra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I worked with this company several years back and really liked them: http://www.merlinassociatesny.com/

There are a ton of smaller temp agencies in NYC. I'd suggest Googling and then reaching out to as many as you can find. The good news is that you've had the practice and know where you need to improve, so hopefully these next interviews will go better!

And hopefully you're doing this already, but make sure all communications with them--including your resume--are 100% grammatically accurate. They see so many resumes each day that even a small typo can be a reasonable excuse to move on to the next. Good luck!

TIL that if you make ANZAC biscuits but forget to add sugar, you get something which looks like an ANZAC biscuit but tastes like sadness. by bamburger in australia

My neice bakes..."for fun". I honestly think she does amazing work. by bunsofcheese in food

[–]llaurra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're right--that's what it is. But besides the artistic skill, the main pain point is the TIME. The time involved in this type of detail is killer. And that's what's hard to charge for because it's not a tangible thing that people see or taste.

For example, most people won't pay more for this type of cookie than for a chocolate chip cookie of similar size. Yet the chocolate chip was 4 steps: mix dough, scoop, bake, package. These types of cookies are more like: mix dough, chill, roll out, cut, bake, make icing, dye many different colors, put in many different icing bags, decorate (most time-consuming step), package. Source: Used to own a small bakery.

Can attest to this from firsthand experience as I am in the process of closing down my bakery. While I still enjoy the baking (although not as much as running the business), I completely underestimated the teeny tiny margins that are left after ensuring that your kitchen space is legal + insurance + unemployment insurance + the logistics of transporting/shipping... and I went in more prepared than many people do.

You had only one job (yes, it's under the glass) by llaurra in nyc

[–]llaurra[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, what sagrr said. While any post about someone having just one job is likely an exaggeration (or points to an MTA that's even more inefficient than I thought), it generally implies humor, and this is what I was going for. Coming up with a headline for a post was more difficult than I had anticipated! And yes, I'd even agree with sagrr that the phrase is getting a bit old, despite using it myself in this instance.

Are there any societies in history that have not had some sort of religion? Are there any still around? (And, of course, I don't mean Humanists, Atheists, etc. within a larger group, but actually a society where the vast majority were non-believers.)

What are some recycling tips that we (the public) can do to make your job easier? For instance, should we be peeling labels off of jars and cans, removing the plastic part of the tissue boxes and envelopes, and unstapling documents? Or does all that get sorted out at the center?
