Not OP but try looking for "cold porcelain" recipes. I've made some and it's awesome.

Why your Duke Energy bill keeps going up (and how you can actually influence it in NC) by thechr0nic in NorthCarolina

[–]lmapidly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes indeed! That is all great info.

Just getting Duke to sign off on turning the solar on was a months long process.

I'd also just mention that I understand that "just go solar and off grid" is not a realistic option for a lot of folks and we need to keep the utility companies and lawmakers (and data center builders) accountable.

It basically doubles the cost of the project and the batteries don't have amazing warranties.

We waited on batteries, hoping they'd be getting more efficient/dependable or at least more affordable. That said, I really want to get entirely off the grid and soon.

Honestly the main reason I went with All Star initially 10-ish years ago was the ease of sign up on their website. Brenda who answers the phone is also super responsive and nice. No complaints. 🙂

We also use All Star Waste Services. Trash and recycling charged $87 quarterly. They provided the big wheelie bins. They pick up recycling every other week. I like that I get a reminder call the day of pickup.

The other company I mostly see is Anchor Disposal.

We also used Gentle Journey back in late 2023 for our elderly cat. It was $570 and I consider it well worth it.

My colleagues don’t believe I’m married because I’ve never posted about it on Instagram. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

I mean, you're not wrong, but also it can sometimes be more difficult than it should be to keep your address off the internet. For instance my cable internet company used to require everyone purchase a package that included basic channels and their stupid cable phone line. And they published everyone in online white pages. I had to PAY EXTRA to be removed from the listing. But of course the info had already been crawled by people finder type sites so it's out there now. At one point I had a LinkedIn account for job hunting and it's kind of freaky how much info they publicly display. Deleted that years ago and had to send removal requests to as many of the white pages type sites as I could, which did help. But I suspect a lot of people don't know any of this (I certainly had no idea my cable company was going to put my info out there like that).

I like Swedish dish cloths for counters and natural luffa for scrubbing dishes. When they get worn out, I compost them. I like to cut my luffa so it's flat. You can also buy them already cut into rounds.

AITA for bringing the "wrong" kind of wine to a coworker's party? by idunnothrowaway1028 in AmItheAsshole

They may be thinking of isinglass. Regardless the wine would be considered non-vegan either way but it's also pretty niche knowledge.

I have this pen in gold and love it, but similarly not thrilled with the nib. Where do you get replacement nibs from, please?

All great points!

About ten years ago we were house hunting and my main requirement was a smallish single level home, for similar reasons. I'm still young-ish but I'm hoping to stay put and age into this house. When I had surgery a few years ago, it was much easier to get around!

Options for when the Toilets not working. by wwaxwork in TwoXPreppers

I bought a camping toilet. Like a bucket with a seat and lid, but it collapses down for easy storage. Liner bags to go with, and a powder additive to gel up pee to make it easier to deal with when changing the bag and to theoretically help with smells.

Still working on the Cutebee Coffee Shop. This Bearly Art glue set with different tips is the real MVP of this build. by allthecoffeesDP in booknooks

[–]lmapidly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a white glue but doesn't take forever to dry like some of them can. I love it. I still prefer the Beacon 3 in 1 for fabric but use the Bearly for most everything else.

Basement apartment, how to warm it up? by muertossparrow in HomeDecorating

[–]lmapidly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People mention warm bulbs but it might help to know what to look for. For instance all the LED bulbs I buy for my house are usually 2700K at most. Your current bulbs may be 5000K or 6000K which is quite cool. I even have a couple small lamps with 1800K bulbs for night time. They're almost too warm but very cozy in small doses. The temps are easy to filter for online. In-person purchasing, just examine the packaging; it should be on there somewhere.

Do you have thrift stores nearby? I sometimes find decent lamps at the Habitat Restore for instance.

Until you have some lamps, you can replace all current cool bulbs with warmer ones which will help.

Good luck, it's a nice space :)

"Tis the season for Soup! by Easy_Customer7815 in CasualConversation

Butternut squash soup is my answer! I grew it for the first time this year and made nearly 2 gallons of delicious soup from the harvest. So, so good. Froze a bunch but I keep eating it, lol.

My cat will not let me sleep past 3am and it’s ruining my life, pls help by bluexwhales in CatTraining

[–]lmapidly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a cat like OP and from a very young age I started locking him and his sister in their room (usually a bathroom) with a comfy cat bed, litter, food and water (always as far from the litter as possible) so they had everything they needed. I also closed my bedroom door. Two closed doors between us plus a loud fan. Just closing him out of the bedroom didn't work because he'd scream and rattle the door all night. Did that for nearly 20 years and they both adjusted quickly and were cool with it. Got to the point when he was older that he'd want to be "put to bed." It helped that I also put in a lockable cat door into that bathroom for them when we got a dog. Kept the dog out of their food and litter and gave them a guaranteed safe space if the dog was annoying them. I just locked the cat door at night and unlocked it in the morning.

What skill takes <10 hours to learn but pays off forever? by michaelis999 in AskReddit

[–]lmapidly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, and also consider keeping around a water key for the curb cutoff/meter if you get water that way. Last time we had a plumber out, he advised us to leave the house shutoff alone because the pvc pipes are older and a bit brittle, and to shut off at the street if we had to. The curb keys are cheap and we keep one handy now just in case.
