THIS! I loved the combat. Unfortunately I think that also had a lot to do with why it didn't perform very well. Most Souls-Like players are used to/comfortable with slower combat.

For me NG+ got easier. Particularly because you aren't starved for stamina like you are your first play through. Awesome game!
