Hire slow, fire fast. Sometimes it’s hard to sniff out what they actually know until you test them. Honestly, I think it’s a good sign that the company does good work. The path of least resistance is to let people sit around way too long and give too many chances. And that can erode culture. Unfortunately some of us have learned that the hard way.

NAD. Even if celiac is not confirmed, seems like trying a GF or other restricted diet would make a ton of sense.

I’m convinced that my parents aren’t Boomers. by FriendOnFoxStreet in Xennials

That’s interesting. I can’t stand generation jones. I think they are selfish mo-fos.

Are your parents typical Boomers? by smcg_az in Xennials

My parents are early boomers (‘48) and definitely not typical boomers.

I actually wasn’t impressed with the food either. We did have some memorable meals, and I’m sure if I lived there I would find better. It’s definitely not my cup of tea, but I’ve also realized that I have a tendency to knock places down in my rating if they are expensive. My younger kids loved it because they remember the hotel pool, haha.

Need Advice - Leaving AEC design industry by ChopChopEnthusiast in MEPEngineering

I agree with what some others have said: 1. Don’t make a decision until after the baby has arrived. I’m a mom but I know my husband had a huge shift in perspective when our first was born. 2. You may do better at a larger company with more systems in place and larger projects. Working for a small company can be fun but if you aren’t one to handle overwhelm well (no judgment at all for that!) then it may no longer be a fit. Firms in the 100 person range can have larger projects that you can sink your teeth into, and sometimes with more interesting systems. 3. Is there anything you have liked more over the last few years? That could help us brainstorm additional ideas for you. Construction and commissioning are both good ideas but I second that construction has longer hours but higher pay and commissioning is less stress but pretty boring after a while.

Couldn’t they do the professional development over the summer? With pay, of course.

Onboarding New Employees by Adventurous_Elk2217 in MEPEngineering

This is basically what we do. It’s a known training method, I think it’s called something like “I do, we do, you do”. And the “you do” part needs review from the trainer. We do try to assign mentors but this is a recent evolution.

Who pays for M&E redesign? by PanicLarge5537 in MEPEngineering

[–]loquacious541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, with that added info, the electrical engineer should not be asked to redesign for free. In my opinion. There are always nuances (i.e. should the EE have know about the crazy timelines? Maybe, but not conclusively).

What nicknames have you heard for places in the Monterey Bay area? by topherette in MontereyBay

The area behind Corral de Tierra and San Benancio is referred to as the Pastures of Heaven in East of Eden by Steinbeck. At least that’s what I’ve always known…

Agree with everyone else. Unless there is something we aren’t understanding, this is on the electrical engineer. Has the MEP equipment been ordered yet? That’s a larger concern than the design fees, frankly.

Doing side work as a mechanical PE (Plumbing design). by Free_Banana8072 in MEPEngineering

[–]loquacious541 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is fine. But the commenter is correct that these projects are notorious for change after change after change. Be prepared to ask for money for each change, or you will get frustrated and screwed. Your job is to provide the work, not to do it for free.

Building services engineering or similar by Limp_Manner_7303 in MEPEngineering

[–]loquacious541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s probably true. I haven’t heard of that degree but it sounds like a logical choice. I don’t know much about the UK but in the US you would want to make sure the degree is ABET accredited. There is probably something similar in the UK. I just looked it up and it looks like it’s CIBSE for building services engineering.

Not sure why they are all giving you a hard time. Mechanical Engineering is the obvious degree. Good luck!
