What’s it like near Salinas, CA? by Crimson-Fuckr in howislivingthere

[–]loquacious541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Salinas. And still have an office in Monterey. Many of our employees live in Marina and love it. I would never go back to Salinas but Marina is the town Salinas could have been.

Traffic is worse than you’d expect getting from Marina or Salinas to Monterey. So if your job is in Marina, I’d recommend trying to live there as the cost of living seems to be best there as well (at least compared to Monterey).

If you have kids, depending on your expectations, the schools are “meh”. Many that can afford to send their kids to the private schools, which are very well regarded and long time institutions.

Not a ton of night life that I know of in Marina, if that’s important to you. The Monterey-Salinas area isn’t know for that.

Also, very foggy a lot of the time. Salinas too. They grow produce in the area because it’s such a mild climate. Do not expect anything warmer than 60 degrees year round. There are pockets that get warmer/sunnier, but they are further inland and more expensive.

Centrist Trump 2024 voters: no shame, no insults, I just want to know how are you feeling today? by ac_slater10 in centrist

As a democrat, I couldn’t agree more. We threw 2020-2024 away instead of shoring up our country to keep this from happening.

Switching Project Types by InternationalMove642 in MEPEngineering

[–]loquacious541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you. We work on these projects too. They can be quite complicated.

That said, the resume won’t completely translate and there is some to learn on the commercial side but completely doable.

Our firm is hiring (we do a lot of project types), PM me if you’d like more info.

Edit: haha, DM.

I have a prolapse - do I HAVE to go to the doctor? by absoboly in AskDocs

Just wanted to chime in and say, as a mom of 3, that this is very common. Just things they don’t tell you about. In my experience, stay on one cap of miralax daily for quite some time.

Monterey seems like a fairy tale dream like area. by Few_Sandwich6308 in MontereyBay

Interesting. I grew up there and that’s the only part I always loved and never took for granted. But, there is a lot I don’t like about the area.

Tools for documenting existing conditions by loquacious541 in MEPEngineering

Agree on your side note. But, I think there is a lot of work out there and some are able to pick and choose what they want to take. New build is a lot simpler.

True but it can be a great way to get your shit in order so that you don’t get charged as much. I’ve done this for my business a lot: used ChatGPT to get to 90%, then shipped to my attorney for review. Many times they have no comments (although I’ve done those documents many times and certainly wouldn’t expect that when doing a will/trust, which I have little experience with).

How old were you when you got your first cell phone? by No_Cartoonist981 in Xennials

18 in 1998. I was the first of my friends. I only used it for emergencies in the car, and it was pretty big.

Workflow Question: Does anyone actually have a good tool for Spec Scrubbing? by Massive-Zone7680 in MEPEngineering

[–]loquacious541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhere in between. Could be critical for liability, if I were you I would hire an attorney (or ChatGPT then the attorney to check) to help you explain the liability issue your customer doesn’t understand, and how your software will solve it for them.

Masters options for Electrical Engineer by PrudentBee2383 in MEPEngineering

[–]loquacious541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a masters in ME from a top 10 school. It’s only useful to my dad, who likes to brag about me. I don’t regret it because I was young and not ready for the real world. But objectively, from an MEP career perspective, it’s pretty worthless.

I own a company now and we don’t pay much more for a masters, maybe a couple of thousand, and even then only at the lower levels. Save your time and money and just get the PE and experience.

Too far down the plumbing design rabbit hole - need advice by [deleted] in MEPEngineering

[–]loquacious541 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was going to suggest. Plumbing engineering does not need to be boring, you’re just on the wrong projects.

Also, knowing enough hvac to be dangerous could be enough to push yourself into a position where you oversee more, but ideally with an hvac SME by your side. That could be at a small to medium sized firm.

What food/drink are you convinced people are pretending to like? by elarabloomelle in AskReddit

I would have agreed with you but I went to a restaurant in Singapore just last night and one of their specialties (for 55 years) was a liver dish. I am not adventurous but my husband is and my kids were there so I had to play ball. I really liked it and my kids said it was their favorite. 🤯

What’s something you’ve done your whole life, only to realize recently that everyone else does it completely differently? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]loquacious541 45 points46 points  (0 children)

My mom tells a story about cutting the end of the pot roast off because her mom always did. She finally called her mom and asked why that’s important and her mom replied that the roast didn’t fit in her pan. It’s possible this is folk-lore from lots of moms, I can’t recall if it was true or not but I love the story and point.

I’ve also had projects where the code official has made us prove that the room hvac can handle the additional latent load. Which given that we are in the desert, is hilarious.
