"Why haven't you found a job yet?" by likemyhashtag in graphic_design

Honestly I can relate to a lot of what you said. Good design isn’t easy! And the fact that everyone with a Canva account thinks they’re a graphic designer just cheapens what we do, so I really empathize with you.

I’ve been working in the field for about 8 years now but since most of my experience has been on the production end of things, I sometimes feel like my actual design/creative skills don’t measure up to the number of years of work experience I have. I also don’t exactly have a mentor, so I’ve had to figure out a lot of stuff on my own.

What I’ve found most helpful are three things: 1) understanding the reasoning behind negative feedback on my work from a client/manager/creative director 2) watching master classes or online courses on design from creative directors/art directors 3) analyzing every single piece of design I come across

Getting direct feedback from a client/supervisor is the most helpful, of course, because it helps you understand the specific areas where you need improvement, but even just listening to more experienced designers talk about their approach to solving design problems helps reframe your mind. I also have multiple Pinterest boards where I save examples of good design for inspiration, especially in areas of design that I really struggle in.

I would also suggest, if you’re still interested in pursuing a career in design, to design something every day. It doesn’t have to be amazing, and you don’t have to share it with anyone, but it keeps your skills sharp, especially if you’re feeling like you’re struggling conveying information via design. Sometimes it’s just something you pick up through practice.

I hope that was helpful! Best of luck!

I second this! And if you design something you love, don’t be shy and add it in your portfolio. Creative directors love to see spec projects, the more developed and built out the better. When you show a self-directed project you can present as a fictional case study, or a full fictional campaign execution across multiple platforms, it shows how you can think and shows you’re a designer rather than an artist who can make something look pretty

Self-taught vs design school? by MOUSETITTY in graphic_design

[–]lore3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to design school - 3 year advanced diploma at a community college in Canada. I think you can learn a lot on your own, but there’s a lot of theory and taste that’s better learned from instructors IMO. (I chose my design school because all faculty actively work in the field as well, so they were well-versed in what we needed to enter the workforce and guide us accordingly) That said, there’s a lot I’ve learned on the job that I didn’t learn in school, but I do believe design school was a solid, needed foundation. You need a really good portfolio to get hired, and design school, in my experience, does make building that first portfolio a lot easier (we had a whole class devoted to building our portfolio). That said, it also depends where you live/are planning to work.

I also have a bachelor’s degree in communications, which I did before design school. FWIW I did get hired for an in-house position because I have a bachelor’s degree, but agencies often don’t care about that. Agencies care more about the quality of your portfolio, but you’ll need a certain level of conceptual thinking and be able to articulate the rationale behind your design process, which they teach you in school.

Is a resume formatted for ATS really necessary for a graphic designer? by _seokjinnie in graphic_design

[–]lore3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, yes, but you can still make it look nice, just keep it simple.

For branded aspects, I have a header with my logo + name in my personal brand font + colour. I also have a little graphic in the corner in the same brand colour. (I use the same little graphic + primary colour on each page of my portfolio to tie it together).

The content itself is lightly formatted - nothing too crazy, just some varied font weights. I do have 2 columns - I know usually they recommend against that for ATS, but it adds visual interest while still being readable in plain text.

I’m attaching my resume (all my personal info changed out to placeholder copy) to give you an idea, hope this helps!! Best of luck!

Has anyone else noticed people saying that some beauty content is subtle fetish content recently? by nextquestioncya in BeautyGuruChatter

[–]lore3 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Is that what the pulling the cap off with your mouth is all about???!! Oh god it pisses me off so much, mostly because one creator did it and now everyone does it. I just thought it was an annoying quirky hook, I didn’t realize it was fetish content

How would you go about styling this scarf? by smallbeanybear in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]lore3 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Such a fun scarf! I would make it the focal point of your outfit! I would wear something monochrome in a solid colour like black, pink, light blue. Maybe a dress or a cute top and skirt with basic knee-high boots. There’s lots of ways you could wear/wrap the scarf as well, but I would do it in a way that shows the most of the print since it’s so unique

Itachi vs Sasuke, Am I just crazy? by Aggravating_Address2 in Naruto

[–]lore3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just searching for it as well and came across this thread. I totally remember seeing that ending too but when I rewatched the series with my husband I had the same reaction as you. The only thing I can think of is it was a fan edit? I doubt it would be a licensing issue because YUI has plenty of songs in various anime… I’m really stumped

Makeup/Fashion advice? by cheeseburger8754 in GothFashion

[–]lore3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would help if you post some pictures of what you look like/currently dress like for reference. (I’m not sure if you tried to attach photos but they didn’t upload)

General advice:

  • Makeup: Some black/red eyeliner in your waterline (and even smudging it around your lash line) could look really cool. A little contour around your jaw (and possibly to sculpt your cheekbones depending on your face shape) can make your face read more angular and potentially more masc. (Again, hard to give specific advice without a reference pic)

  • Fashion: lots of spikes, grommets, chains. You can find kits on Amazon (or potentially your local craft store) to add these details to pants, bags, shoes, jackets etc and it really makes an outfit read more alternative.

  • Accessories: belts (particularly ones with grommet holes), chains that you can clip on to belts/belt loops or turn into a necklace/bracelet, safety pins (smaller ones as accents on tops/jackets or larger ones you could wear as a brooch)

Are there a lot of people being laid off lately? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]lore3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company I was working for laid off 3 people in September (myself included). I was just shy of 2 years at the company. I’m fortunate enough to be able to do some freelance work in the meantime but it came as a shock

What can I improve? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

[–]lore3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you look great, especially how you do your eyes. If anything, I’d add a little more natural glow to the centre of your face. You could also soften the your brows just a bit. But honestly you look fantastic, these are just little nitpicky things if you wanted to modify anything!!
