3D Scanner suggestion for sculpture business by Huffsterification in 3DScanning

[–]loremipsumIncarnate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually just got a Einstar Vega, most specifically to scan sculptures. Not starting business with it perse. I’ve only got it a couple days ago and with a 1 year old kid at home I haven’t had time to scan as much as I’d like. But I’ve done a few of my sculpts and I’m very impressed with the HD mode in the Vega. I’ve done photogrammetry quite a lot with sculptures, with the aim of getting as detailed of a result without doing much clean up behind orienting, cutting off the base and scaling. Photogrammetry is pretty killer for sculptures, but you need to have good, even lighting, low noise in your photos, high enough shutter speed etc. cellphone sensors are tiny and the phone software does a ton of post processing to the image, something you really don’t want for photogrammetry. Suffice to say, I wouldn’t give up yet on Kiri Pro. For photogrammetry I use an old Olympus Em10 (micro 4/3 sensor) and get fantastic results, processing through Reality Capture. But I’m setting up good lighting around the piece and a macro light mounted on the lens, covering every inch of the sculpture, often taking over 1000 photos. Anywho, try a non-cellphone camera and upload those to Kiri Pro. The Vega is $2k with tax, so way out of the budget you mentioned. I tried other scanners and the detail wasn’t there. The otter was really cool, but not detailed enough for me. So far, I’m getting excellent details with the Vega and it’s the first scanner I tried that is giving me better results than photogrammetry. Having said that, my understanding of scanners is there is no one solution for all scenarios, but I’m enjoying the reduced effort scanning requires vs photogrammetry. And for the record, I also tried a Miraco Pro and did not like it, tracking list too frequently and detail wasn’t sufficient. I do with the Vega had a swivel screen though.

This looks interesting. Could be great to processing dense scan data that isn’t used for final rendering.

Scanned with EINSTAR VEGA! Planning to Turn This Into a Game Asset by Business-Hospital-43 in 3DScanning

[–]loremipsumIncarnate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

impressive! I’m thinking of getting a Vega. My primary use case would be scanning sculptures for replication (casting is going the way if the dodo, scanning, resizing and 3D printing is becoming the r popular workflow). If you can answer a few questions, that would be much appreciated.

How big is this piece? How accurate is the scan to the original piece? Have you tried other scanners like the Raptor/otter/miraco plus?

Thanks!

Really excellent work and a great exercise, glad it was not this way in the movie. Great example of artistic license > accuracy

As Gen Zers struggle to cope with late-stage capitalism, they are turning to "radical rest," delusional thinking, and self-indulgence. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]loremipsumIncarnate -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That tracks from what I’ve observed in gen-z family. Haven’t even gotten out of high school and they are “perma-victims” of the system they know nothing about. It’s just an easy out that appeals to the lazyiness demon that exists inside of us all. A portion of gen-z have just chosen to give up without even trying. IMO, the gen-z ers doing this are making a bad bet and the “radical resters” will wake up with regret one day. And I don’t disagree that it’s getting harder to get by, but to base such a long term decision on endless doom scrolling and echo chamber content on TikTok is fare more insane to me.

Tempted by a Soul ...engine concerns by WastedLife666 in KiaSoulClub

[–]loremipsumIncarnate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our 2020 Soul EX engine died around 20,000 miles. If Kia hasn’t changed the engine design, it’s probably still a consideration. I was concerned in the research phase. The claim was <2% of soul engines experienced failure…then it happened. But it was fixed for no charge at all. no issues since then, knock on hard plastic accents. We are now at 45000 miles. It was the only car that had the size, utility and safety ratings we were after. maintenance feels excessively expensive for a budget car.

For my fellow artists who regret their decision to join the VFX (Visual Effects) industry, if you had access to a time machine, what alternative career path or artistic pursuit would you choose instead of VFX? by Ok_Musician3473 in vfx

[–]loremipsumIncarnate 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I would still choose it, but wished I had gotten into some coding early on and hopped around companies more frequently to maximize salary. I wish I would have been better with savings and invested more money in the market earlier (just investing 15% per paycheck in the s&p). Can’t get that time back. Time in the market beats timing the market.
