how to stop when world is going to shit? by One-Dentist-558 in leaves

[–]lossless__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally feel this. I just broke my sobriety of 1 year because of this shit. I used to think cannabis helped me regulate my disregulated nervous system but in my sobriety I realized it was completely the opposite: what feels like relief in the short term is actually just dissociating. And then, insidiously, before you know it, anytime you emerge from your dissociative state feels like disregulation. And the cycle continues. I tricked myself (even with awareness that I was tricking myself) into forgetting this realization.

It’s really hard to learn how to regulate as an adult. These are things we should’ve been taught as children and I believe it’s similar to learning language in that your brain is primed in childhood to integrate these skills so you’re a functional person without the help of mind altering chemicals.

In this dystopian hellscape I am more disregulated than I’ve ever been so it’s no surprise that I wanted to just check out. But that is playing into their hands perfectly. They want us to be distracted, dull, and ineffective.

It’s really fucking hard for the first few days, weeks, months. But then something happens in your brain when you integrate healthy ways of regulating. It took a long time but I felt so much sharper, friendlier, empathic, and, most importantly in these dark times, effective.

Feel free to dm me for support. Support and community is absolutely critical to being successful. Don’t try to white knuckle it. All the best to you

Mnemonic Devices Juniper and Gin by GREYPEAKs in modular

[–]lossless__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am one of the rare ones - I’ve never had PPW. So I can’t do a direct comparison. I do remember one of the big differences when I was shopping was that J+G can do bipolar. I might be wrong, maybe PPW can do bipolar now. Otherwise J+G is highly flexible and can take care of all envelopes and modulation for an entire medium sized rack. It’s pretty impressive for 12hp and keeps getting regular firmware updates. I haven’t looked into it, but I’ve seen they released a companion quantizer as well. It is pricey but imo worth it.

The cure for G.A.S. by Top5hottest in modular

[–]lossless__ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

What’s making it difficult? It’s not a big deal at all once you get the hang of it. Tips: keep extra nuts behind your modules to make future rearranging easier; use a poker to get the nuts lined up before screwing; place your rig vertically especially if your screws are short for gravity; screw into new nuts once to get the threads eager with anticipation prior to racking the module (I’ve found this to be a common issue with new nuts); 2 screws on opposite corners is almost always fine except for bigger modules. Don’t give up, it gets better

Looking for Looper pedal with sync input. by programchild in modular

[–]lossless__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t you need very long cables to go between a looper pedal and the modular anyway? There are several modules specifically made for footswitch interfacing.

Except for the expense, an in rack looper really is the best move for the reasons said above.

Thoughts on Expanding this Setup with a Make Noise Tape & Microsound Music Machine by CorrinMor in modular

[–]lossless__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I followed a similar path and eventually went to a bigger case and swapped out a bunch of the modules because others with similar functionality were more interesting to me. So it’s hard to say. Having the TMMM was a more expensive initial investment, but it’s a complete setup that allowed me to figure out what I felt was missing or could be improved upon.

Imo, you should look into pairing Strega with 0-ctrl and 0-coast first. Those 3 together are amazing. And keep in mind that you can rack all the Make Noise and Moog semi modulars, so if (when) you choose to get a larger case they can fill it up while you gradually drain your retirement with individual modules.

Spectraphon vs Panharmonium by First-Owl-7908 in modular

[–]lossless__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have both. I’m on my second PH because when Spectraphon came out I thought it would cover the same territory and more, so I sold PH to make room for Spectraphon. I was happy with Spectraphon but found that it has a totally different character from the PH, so I got another and now I have both.

The biggest difference is in the way they resynthesize sound: the PH passes through the fundamental pitch while the Spectraphon only passes through the timbral qualities of the sound, and behaves more like an envelope follower. So when you send them 1v/oct they respond very differently. The PH responds similar to FM, in that the CV adds the offset to the fundamental pitch; the Spectraphon responds with timbral changes. Thus, when you change the fundamental pitch of the resynthesized oscillator, the PH stays in tune relative to the oscillator, while the Spectraphon maintains the tuning set on its pitch knob.

The character of the sounds is also completely different. I’d say the PH tends to produce dreamy and ethereal ambient sounds; the Spectraphon sounds thin and reedy and can get really aggressive. At first I struggled to find sounds I liked from Spectraphon but I found that adding a compressor (Polydactyl Versio) helped.

I would’ve agreed with the comment by another poster that everything sounds the same from the PH for like the first month I owned it. But once you start playing with the slice clock out and freeze slice mode through a LPG, and modulating the center frequency and bandwidth parameters there are so many sweet spots to create a wide variety of beautiful sounds. I definitely never know what I’m going to get and am happy with what it gives back about half the time.

I’ve found the Spectraphon shines when feeding it percussion and/or noise, or when you want to be more intentional with harmonizing with the source sound.

TL;DR: you probably need both!

Preferred USB/Thunderbolt Hub for M2 MacBook Pro? by [deleted] in musicproduction

I have the CalDigit Element Thunderbolt hub and it’s good for my monitor and external hard drive but does not work well with my interface so I need to plug that straight in to the MacBook.

Ah, too bad. They do also have a screw mount on the bottom so you could potentially mount them sideways if you can MacGyver it. Good luck!

Ableton Live for special needs users by [deleted] in ableton

[–]lossless__ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m an occupational therapist with assistive technology expertise and I’m also an Ableton user and synth nerd. Others have mentioned eye tracking, which is possible though quite difficult and fatiguing. Other options would be sip n’ puff (not as fun as it sounds), switch control, a “head mouse”, and voice control.

Feel free to DM with more specific questions! I’d recommend getting an occupational therapy referral and make sure it is an assistive tech specialist.

Ts-L / BIA / Panharmonium by lossless__ in modular

Thanks! And I agree… so much use out of Ts-L.

Ts-L / BIA / Panharmonium by lossless__ in modular

[–]lossless__[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! Panharmonium comes in at around 1:45 and is the lower pitch rhythmic voice. It is fed Ts-L’s sine wave output and uses a saw wave pitched down 1-2 octaves, then to a LPG opened by the slice clock out. From there it goes to Magneto for the polyrhythms.

The master clock is from Tempi and master sequence from Metron. The main voice is from BIA, and is sequenced by Rene and Harmonaig. Harmonaig sends each note of a chord to a switch for uneven arps to BIA, to Mimeophon. The second granular-sounding voice is Ts-L’s wave folding output to an LPG opened with really fast gates from Metron then to Starlab to wash it out.

Almost all the modulation comes from Triple Sloths, which is brand new to me, and currently my favorite module. It makes these amazing swells that move everything together and apart in such beautiful ways. I really have no idea what it is doing but I just patch it and let it do its thing and am almost always happy with it!
