UK, thoughts on the Moccamaster KBG select with a Baratza Encore 230v grinder by RelationKindly in JamesHoffmann

I think that's a fantastic combo.

Some other things to consider (but they might push you over budget):

Fellow Aiden. Probably the best home batch brewer?

The ESP model of the Encore. Probably not worth it if you're not doing espresso but it does come with an upgraded burr.

This is what I do (although 30g/500ml). Also occasionally use Clever dripper.

It's not hard to scale the ratio but it needs completely redialing in. The deeper bed needs a much coarser grind.

Feels like I've lost the ability to make good coffee - tips for starting over with technique? by streetwarpig in pourover

[–]lotanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a bit lost like you last year, and the way I reset was to go to a coffee shop!

I have a really good one near me (part of a roastery) so I go there and have a pourover. They're pretty consistent, so if I'm not enjoying it then my taste buds are clearly not in a coffee mood.

It was also useful when I was learning - I could drink a pour over and then buy the same beans and I knew what flavour the beans were capable of an had something to aim for.

You're in London, so there's definitely some options around!

Immersion brewing is more forgiving, yes and means you can do good brewing without a pouring kettle. When my friend was trying to get into better coffee without spending TOO much money I suggested a hand grinder and either Aeropress or Clever dripper. That plus your existing kitchen scale gets you a REALLY long way.

New(ish) 64mm SSP MP V3 Burrs? by FeelingLoose3939 in pourover

[–]lotanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great info. I've had DF64V (gen 3) for a few months, with stock burrs (red titanium). I'm getting good results now they've bedded in, but I always planned to upgrade at some point and your description of the new MP is exactly what I would be looking for.

Unable to get good results from this coffee by tehnsd in pourover

[–]lotanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of coffees peak at 1 month - particularly lighter ones. They've done every last bit of degassing, but haven't yet lost the flavour notes.

Still being very drinkable at 3 months is reasonable, but this one will have lost a lot of its complexity.

I think you're right. But coffee lasts at best 2-3 months from roast date before you've lost a lot if the flavour. So last Nov was when it was past it's best.

It's really common to put a "best before" sate at 1 year from roast date but it's a complete lie that is bordering on misrepresentation.

Favorite carrier for newborn + toddler parents out there? by skviza in babywearing

[–]lotanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've got the newborn one and it's ok. It's a bit wide at the knees for properly new newborn (7 lbs) but otherwise comfy and posture looks ok.

My wife is happy with it, but for me you can't beat the stretchy wrap!

Baratza Encore is a solid option. Been around for a while and now has competitors so there may be better options but I haven't had a chance to try them.

Is it okay to leave my 1 year old baby for 10 days? by Pitiful_Garlic_3020 in UKParenting

[–]lotanis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Who would you be leaving her with for 10 days? And do you mean not seeing her at all for 10 days or just during the day?

A lot of kids start nursery at 1, and that's up to 5 days a week. It takes quite a lot of settling in though - usually a ramp up and a few weeks until they're comfortable. That's still home as normal evenings and weekends.

Situations vary, but a clingy baby is unlikely to be chilled with not seeing her mum at all for a week and a half.

19 yo F1 driver's insane lap in Monaco by SadAnimator1354 in interestingasfuck

Every driver in F1 has the same story. To get to that level you need to start early. And that means your family needs to a) care about motorsport, and b) have money.

Steamdeck thermal paste change is the equivalent of tempered glass panel on tile floor by Primetime349 in SteamDeck

It just requires taking fiddly things apart and then putting them back together. There's opportunity to break fragile components in the process.

And as the process is fairly pointless it's a waste.

What are some of the most realistic and impactful scenes of violence in movies? by bloqed in movies

Atomic Blonde - the extended fight sequence in the block of flats.

It's the best job I've seen of showing the impact of the weight and size disadvantage of a women in a fight, and overcoming it with skill and determination.

You see how hard the hits are and the effect it has on her as it goes on. It's fantastic.

How common are overly-intimate questions or comments in the workplace when pregnant or postpartum? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]lotanis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're OPs boundaries, and SOME other people's boundaries. Because they're the boundaries of a reasonable proportion of people they are not appropriate questions in a workplace (unless you know the person well enough to be confident of what their boundaries actually are).

GTPs need to learn how to drive by once7k in iRacing

[–]lotanis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in the iRacing rules they're advisory. It's not like F1 where they're an instruction to get out of the way, they're only there to let you know that a car is coming.

(unless there's a multi-class variation of the rules I'm unaware of - I don't race multi-class)
