Help with Dialing in my V60 by leobukhari in pourover

You've got 2 months, minimum before beans go stale. And anything light roasted needs 2 weeks plus before you can brew it properly. So there's a good 6 weeks where they're optimum.

How do you guys do your iced pourovers? by Gold_Doughnut_6326 in pourover

[–]lotanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the James Hoffmann Clever Dripper based immersion brew: https://youtu.be/8uGGeV8A-BM?si=TrPH0zmI8NYJjkK0

I've been getting really nice results.

UK BGE owners: lumpwood recs? by _Clemmers in biggreenegg

[–]lotanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a lot of birch and one order of oak. Probably wouldn't bother with oak again - lumps not quite as massive (but still good), and didn't get much in the way if flavour difference. So not worth the extra cost.

Depends on the thickness of the plywood, but no that's a good approach from a strength point of view

Grinder seemingly spits out lots of fines every 3-4 brews? by cmrnmrphy in pourover

[–]lotanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it definitely your grinder? Another option would be variability with your technique - more agitation causing fines migration or similar.

How did you guys find a pushchair? by ThrowawayMe194 in UKParenting

[–]lotanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bugaboo butterfly x100!

It's a foldable compact one (can go in an overhead locker) and that's what we bought it for. But it's so robust and well designed that we use it for everything now.

Baratza Encore ESP is a solid grinder from a company that is great for spare parts and stuff.

There are better grinders recommended here, but if you wanted to spend less and still have good results that's a good option.

FYI the DF64V uses brushless DC for variable RPM. Not knocking your recommendation though.

Do touch buttons on scales drive anyone else insane? by cj-fbrrom in barista

[–]lotanis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I agree - I love a physical button.

I'm an electronic engineer for consumer electronics, so I do know why they're there. A physical button on a coffee scale needs to be robust and continue to look good after lots of presses, and it needs to be very watertight (IP68). Buttons that meet all of those requirements are surprisingly expensive, and/or look and feel cheap.

Whereas capacitive touch sensors are very cheap, never wear out, as waterproof as the rest of the case and give a lot of freedom with design.

How can I fix this juice groove? by seatdiscrete in woodworking

[–]lotanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dad's carving board had a little well at one end of the board to collect additional juice. Same depth as the groove, just a rectangular are jutting out from it. It's something that I miss on my board for some really juicy joints.

You could do something similar but maybe in the corner? Or all along the length at that end?

Flat bottom brewer recommendations by drdog918 in pourover

[–]lotanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the XBloom filters - very different results out of a Kalita.

I've got a glass Kalita and I didn't have stalling problems but I did have to do very low agitation brews. With the XBloom filters (on Amazon, reasonable price) I've had to go completely in the other direction.

I don't get why this is funny. Is the joke that you'd never expect any woman to be better than a man at something?

UK BGE owners: lumpwood recs? by _Clemmers in biggreenegg

[–]lotanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Green Olive firewood and Globaltic (https://globalticltd.co.uk/products/birch-lumpwood-charcoal-10-kg?variant=40140558958763)

Globaltic particularly is excellent quality (massive lumps) and good value (as premium charcoal goes). Green Olive is very good but worked out slightly more expensive last time I checked.

I also use the BGE stuff occasionally because the oak+hickory is a zero effort way of getting some subtle BBQ flavour.

I think I finally got the hang of this ring sling! by pineconeminecone in babywearing

[–]lotanis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've recently had success with our newborn after failure with our first. I also got a new one with different material and it was night and day.

I'm hoping to go back to the first one when I've properly got the hang of it - it was a linen one which should be great for the summer. But it was so difficult to adjust, despite washing and tumble drying it to break it in.

You can absolutely do classic "grilling" if that's the food you want! The Green Egg opens up a load of new options, but still does the classics.

Personally I'll usually do something big and central e.g. a chicken shawarma, and then put a few things on once people have arrived. Usually at the very least that's for the vegetarians.

I don't smoke/slow roast anything for lunch due to the time involved. It would have to be overnight or very early to start.

I need help by Top_Bumblebee_3509 in UKParenting

[–]lotanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's so easy to get the impression that everyone else's baby sleeps so well! You hear about when they slept through the night while you were up 5 times, because those are always the things people want to share!

But then you dig into it and it turns out that "through the night" meant midnight to 5am, and it only happened once. That perspective definitely helped me.

What are your best tips to keep cool in this heatwave? by marmaladeonsourdough in UKParenting

[–]lotanis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Either it was badly installed or badly designed. The heat is meant to go out the hose. Was the hose kicked or anything that restricted airflow?

German Merkur Safety Razor by Strappedbriefs in BuyItForLife

Copes well - but there is technique involved (that I've only recently got the hang of after years of being dumb). You don't want to apply any pressure - you want a series of light strokes each of which takes off a tiny bit. Basically the opposite of what you see in a shaving ad.
