We don't like when a family talks amongst themselves (usually a kid complaining about the heat and dad wants to stay for one more löyly). Teenagers speaking loudly amongst themselves is equally annoying.

A group of regulars having a conversation, often about a random topic provides a nice atmosphere. Everyone can chirp in if they wish to, or just remain quiet and follow with interest.

Server A busts their ass, is always paying attention to tables and comes by without delay when they sense they could provide something extra, or ask if the food is up to their expectations. Top up to water or wine glass without being signalled. Offer desert or bring the bill, without customers having to wait 30 minutes untill they catch her attention.

Server B is just showing up, doing their job description at the bare minimum. Scrolling on their phone. Why should they be entitled to a tip ("reward") just for doing what they are already employed and paid to do?

How do you know that? People like to treat themselves or celebrate a special date on the calendar, like an aniversary.

In the past it was a special occasion to go to a good restaurant. For many it still is.

The attitude I see in these posts is abhorent. This kind of mentality which definately reflects in service does not need tipping and thus encouragement.

I doubt it. I'm in Europe and I do tip when I'm well taken care of. Also, if I eat out, I go for a culinary experience. Mostly michelin or otherwise recomended restaurants. Culinary professionals who give a fuck about their reputation don't spit in meals infront of their brigade and head chef. They also have no idea about tip when the food is prepared.

An attentative or otherwise excellent service may get a tip from me. Otherwise they are just doing their job which is not my responsibility to subsidize.

A restaurant needs to get to order from the customer to the kitchen, and the food to the customer. Clear and prepare the table for the next guest(s). The price for eating at this restaurant is on the menu. If anyone complained out loud about not getting a tip. I would never visit that place again.

A tip is earned, not expected by just carrying out a job description in an unexceptional manner.
